Chapter 10
I have been in Los Angeles for almost a month now and it’s been such a glorious stay. I have gotten to live a dream and experience a lot of places I had only imagine or seen on the internet or on Tv. I spoke to my family on FaceTime as often as I could, which is a very new experience we enjoy because we never got to FaceTime before I moved. All of us were living in the same house and so there was never a need. Maggie has been a really good host and friend, introducing me to most of her friend. She has literally taken me to all the places that I’d written down on my bucket list, even to those that she doesn’t like. Unlike me, she is very outgoing and likes to spend most of her weekend nights out partying with her friends. She tries to convince me to go out with them but am an indoor kind of girl. I’d rather stay at home and watch movies or read a book as I usually have the whole house to myself, although I did once go out with them and experienced the L.A night life. Countless clubs come alive at night in the city and people especially the youth party so hard like it’s the last night of their life and I do understand why because it was such a thrill even for me and I don’t love partying.
On this particular night, Maggie’s friends came over to say hi before they whisked her away to a club a few blocks down from our apartment. I know she wont be back until early morning so I decide that this is the perfect time to binge on the current series that I had started watching; ‘The Blacklist’. I bring my blanket from the bedroom and pick a bunch of snacks from the kitchen as I plan on staying up all night. It has been a while since I sat all night watching a series. Back home I was always too tired after work and had to sleep early in order to also wake up early the next day. I spend the next hours watching and eating so many snacks as we all already know that this is my favourite to pass free time.
As I look through the glass windows, the city lights are starting to come alive as people begin to wake up. I glance at the clock wall and realize that it’s almost 4.00 in the morning. I have already watched two seasons of the show throughout the night and so I decide it’s time to sleep. I switch off the Tv and the lights before heading to my room and settling in bed then give Maggie a quick call to see if she’s alright and from the loud noise in the background I can tell that they are still at the club and she probably wont be back for another hour or two so I nod off to sleep.
.......................
‘Ring, ring!’ the sound of Maggie’s phone ringing from her room is so loud that it wakes me up. I wonder what time she came in last night because I didn’t hear a sound. I guess I was too tired. The brightness of the room immediately forces my eyes shut right after I open them. I’d left my curtains open the previous night and the bright light was pouring into the room through the window.
“Pick up the phone Maggie,” I lowly grunt as her ringing phone becomes annoying to my ears. The time on my phone is 1.00pm in the afternoon and I didn’t expect it to be so late.
Today is a Sunday and we are supposed to spend the afternoon on the beach but am not sure if Maggie will still be up to it. She must be really exhausted from being out all night. I get up and go to her room to find that she has just woken up to answer the call.
“Good morning, what time did you get back?” I ask as I get on the other side of her bed.
“5.30, am actually not as tired as I expected to be. Oh, by the way, my friends crushed last night and I invited them to come with us to the beach. Is that okay?” She stares at me.
“Yeah sure, the more the merrier. Wow, I must have really been knocked out last night! I should have heard you guys come in.”
“That’s because you slept so late, “Maggie says as she gets up to go into the bathroom and take a shower. I also follow suit and shower before Maggie’s friends wake up. I put on some jean shorts, and tank top on top of my white backless swimsuit because I don’t like going into changing rooms to put on my swimwear.
“Morning,” I say to Jo and Emily who are just waking up from sleep on the couch all morning. They have been friends with Maggie since she moved to this side of town. Jo is Asian with long straight blonde hair. She is the funny one just like Maggie. Emily is just as quiet as I am but full of sarcasm and jokes. She’s not so tall with curly brown hair. They are actually really fun to be around which is unusual for me as am introverted.
We talk for a while before Maggie comes into the room already dressed up. The girls also get prepared and we leave the house at 2.00 pm ready to spend the day at the beach.
