“Wake up, girl!” I am woken up by a very loud Maggie barging into my room. Oh hey, look at that, am already calling it ‘my’ room.
She goes over to draw the curtains and the room becomes brightly lit by the morning sunshine. I grunt and cover my head with a pillow feeling not so energetic. I guess it’s the jet lag from my flight.
“What time is it?”
“It’s already 7:00, get up” Maggie says as she pulls the covers off me and am too tired to fight her.
I get up and look outside the window. Mornings here are so different from what am used to. People are already up jogging, walking their dogs, going to work and businesses are already up and running. Wow, so different.
I glance over at Maggie whose already dressed in a fancy grey skirt suit and black stiletto’s making her appear even taller. “I have a meeting in an hour with a top notch client. “she says, picking up her handbag and car keys as she walks out the door. “See you later”. It’s Wednesday and she has to go to work that means I’ll have a few more hours to go back to bed before she comes home later in the afternoon.
I walk to the kitchen to find that Maggie had already made breakfast before she left and boy does it smell glorious in here. Eggs, sausages and pancake with freshly squeezed orange juice. Mmmmh my favourite. It’s just like my mom made them.
I serve some on the plate and head into the living room to eat as I watch an episode of The Property brothers.
A few hours go by before I start feeling sleepy again and so I decide to go take a nap for a little while.
......................................
I am still in my pyjamas at noon and this would make my mom cringe and I laugh at this thought. It’s time to freshen up for the rest of the day. After a nice dip in the bathtub, I blow-dry my hair which I later on realise how unnecessary it is coz it’s blazing hot outside it would have dried up anyway.
I put on my strapless red and white flowery dress which compliments my red hair and green eyes quite well. I love putting on sneakers, but in this town it seems am going to be a sandals kind of gal which I don’t own a lot of.
It’s around 2:00 pm when Maggie gets back home, changes into a short dress and sandals and we immediately drive off to the mall which is not too far from the apartment.
This was the first activity on my to-do list and am so glad am finally getting down to do it. I have not been to a mall in a long time and am definitely looking forward to this. As we drive down the road with wind in our hair and singing to loud music on the radio I smile thinking that I couldn’t have made a better decision in my life.
We pull up to the mall parking lot and it is packed. Maggie tells me that is because there is a public pool where a lot of people spend their hot summers.
‘The Grove’ mall name welcomes us at the entrance and am already at awe of how big it looks from the outside.
There are so many stores inside, those that I’ve been to and others I’ve only ever heard of. Maggie suggests that we should go buy new clothes especially for me because I have very few clothes that are suitable for this weather. She drags me into one of the fancy store clothes mostly filled with summer-theme clothes that look really good but are pretty expensive.
I personally always prefer thrifting for clothes but I guess it wouldn’t hurt to buy myself something nice once in a while. After all I’d been working so hard for a while but I never bought anything so what the heck!
We walk through the store picking up some clothes and shoes and head over to the fitting rooms. Maggie goes in first to fit the clothes she picked and decides to put on fashion show for the rest of the people in the fitting area. She’s so funny, cracks everyone up with her funny moves and poses and oh I wish we had a chance to do this in our teenage years like all other best friends do, but it’s pretty cool we still get to do this now. Am glad we remained friends and didn’t change despite the miles between us. Cheesy right? I know.
The shop attendant walks into the fitting area and says that we are making a lot of noise and so everybody disperses. What a buzz kill.
I try on the clothes I chose and the fit perfectly so we pick our stuff, pay and leave the store.
Time is flying by pretty quickly and because it is almost 4.00pm we quickly go into Target and pick up a few groceries we need at the house and then head over to the food court to have some late lunch. I order quesadilla and some fries and Maggie orders a burger.
“You still really love burgers huh” I laugh at the excited face she makes when the lady hands her the tray of burger and fries. After finding a place to sit, we chow down our food accompanied with stories or gossip if you want to call it that.
The evening starts to set in and we decide to pass by a flea market down the street. Flea markets are my idea of good shopping. It’s like a one stop shop for everything from clothes hang on racks, antiques, home appliances, electronics and many more. We spend a few hours there and get some nice antiques before heading back home and settling in for the night. It has definitely ben a good day.
