There are a bunch of people playing beach volleyball across from where we are seated. They look like college goers and one of them walks towards us.
“Hey guys, would you like to join us in our game? We need more players and I thought you might be interested. “He asks before saying that his name is Jeff.
“Yes sure! We would love to, “Emily immediately says as she gets up and walks with Jeff back to the other players. Maggie and Jo also get up to follow them but Maggie stops to ask if am coming. “Am not really a fan of sports Maggie, I came to the beach to bask in the sun.” I start to say before they both grab my feet and start dragging off of my towel on the ground. “Don’t be a buzz kill Cindy, we came to the beach to have some fun. We might as well try something new!” Jo says as she continues to pull my leg.
“Okay, fine! Let me go! I’ll walk on my own.” They help me off the ground with big annoying grins plastered on their faces .I huff and walk past them to Emily who is already introducing herself to the rest of the team. She loves playing volleyball and even spends her time watching games on Tv. “Hey guys, this is Cindy. She’s the least athletic among us and probably won’t enjoy this game very much. Go slow on her,” she jokingly says to the other players and they burst into laughter.
“Haha! Very funny” I laugh sarcastically. I’m gonna crush you all and make you regret laughing at me. I think to myself and put on an evil grin on my face before turning to look at Emily who is looking at me weirdly. Oops I hope I didn’t say all that out loud. Emily and I join one time and Maggie and Jo join the other time. After being shown which positions and practising a little, we start playing. Both teams end up winning different games and it is actually not so bad. My team wins our times and Maggie’s time wins three. We get so lost in the game and before we realise, it is almost 5.00 pm and a lot of the people have already started leaving the beach to go back home.
Some of the players begin to disperse, others go home while others just stay and continued swimming in the water. There are less people surfing the waves now so Jo and Maggie decide to grab their surfboards and go into the water. The waves are really big at this time but am not too worried because they are already excellent pros at this. The sun is still very hot despite it being early in the evening. Emily goes to lay back down for a few minutes and I sit beside her and start eating my leftover sandwich. I have spent so much energy while playing that it got me feeling a bit hungry. I then decide to also nap for a few minutes just like Emily before going back into the water.
By the time I wake up, Maggie and Jo have been surfing for quite a while. I decide to go and swim for a few minutes before it starts to get dark. The water has become a bit colder by now because it is late in the evening and the sun has already started to set. Since I have carried my camera into the water, I decide to start taking beautiful pictures of the sunset and the shore. There are very few people left on the beach. Maggie and Jo are surfing at a point further than where I am swimming. Emily is still at the shore as she decided that she does not want to go back into the cold water after taking that nap.
I decide to swim a little bit further into the water so that I can get better shots of the beach at a wider angle. I also take pictures of Maggie and Jo as they surf the monstrous waves. My battery starts to blink and I know that it is running low so I decide to just float on my back and watch the beautiful night sky littered with thousands of stars.
‘Hey Cindy! Swim back, it is time to go!” I hear Maggie shouting from the beach shore. I didn’t even notice when they swam back. It has been a wonderful day at the beach enjoying the water but I guess it is time to head home now, so I hang the camera around my neck and start to swim back. I immediately have a sense of Deja vu as I swim to the shore and suddenly I get a little dizzy. My vision gets blurry and my legs become numb. My head immediately starts aching and there is a very weird smell out of nowhere and I cannot pin point where it is coming from.
“What’s happening?!” I start to panic as I feel the water dragging me down. “Maggie help! HELP!!” I start to scream as everything completely gets blurred around me and I start swallowing water. I am being dunked under the water faster than I can gasp for more. I look over at the beach as I call over to the girls but I start to doubt that they can see me in all that darkness. I am clearly running out of time and all I can do at this point is hope that they can hear my last outcry.
“Maggiiieee!” I let out one last loud cry before I get completely submerged under water and then everything goes dark.
