The Contract

Elena stared at the document in front of her as if it might suddenly disappear. The words on the paper were clear, but they felt unreal. Marriage Contract. Three years. Public wife. Private arrangement. Financial compensation. Her fingers slowly turned the pages. Everything was detailed. Living arrangements. Public appearances. Confidentiality clauses. And one line that made her heart skip. "An heir must be produced during the term of the marriage." Elena's eyes lifted slowly to the man sitting across from her. Alexander Knight. He watched her calmly, his expression unreadable. "You're serious," she said quietly. Alexander leaned back slightly in his chair. "I don't make jokes about legal agreements." The assistant spoke again. "Mr. Knight's grandfather requires him to marry and produce an heir before the end of the year in order to secure control of the family corporation." Elena's mind raced. "So you need a wife," she said slowly. "Yes." "And you chose... me?" Alexander's gaze held hers. "You have no connections to my rivals." "That's the only reason?" "You also have no history of scandals." Elena let out a small laugh. "That's because no one cares enough about my life to create one." For the first time, Alexander's eyes flickered with something resembling curiosity. "Exactly." The room went silent. Elena looked down at the contract again. Three years. Enough money to finish university. Enough money to start a life somewhere far away from her uncle. Freedom. But also... A child. Elena's voice dropped. "You expect me to have your baby?" Alexander's tone was calm. "My grandfather expects it." Elena studied his face. "And what do you expect?" Alexander didn't hesitate. "Control." The word sent a strange chill through her. Elena closed the contract slowly. "And if I refuse?" Alexander stood. The movement was sudden enough to make her look up. "You'll leave," he said simply. "No consequences." Elena stared at him. This man had just offered her a life she could never imagine... and was now ready to walk away without a second thought. But as he turned toward the door, Elena spoke. "Wait." Alexander stopped. She looked at the contract again. Then she picked up the pen. "If I do this," she said quietly, "my life changes forever." Alexander turned back toward her. "Yes." Elena signed her name. And at that moment, Elena Hart unknowingly stepped into the most dangerous chapter of her life.
