Unspoken Emotions – EPISODE NINE
Jeffrey widened his eyes to be sure of what he had just seen, wiping his face with his hand as if to confirm it wasn’t a dream.
“Why is she calling me this early?” he wondered aloud.
He quickly dialled the number, and gina picked up on the second ring.
Jeffrey: Hello.
Gina : Yes, good morning, Jeffrey .
Jeffrey: Good morning, Gina
Gina : I’m so sorry for calling you this early, but I needed your confirmation on the replies I sent last night. I have to work on them as soon as possible, I have a lot on my plate today.
Jeffery was amused. The harsh, distant Gina he once knew seemed to have changed overnight. For a moment, he thought about Gina from his dream, calm and polite.
Gina: Hello? Hello, jeffrey! Are you there?
Jeffrey: Oh yes, I’m here. Sorry, I didn’t quite get you.
Gina : Eiii, so I said all these for nothing?
Jeffrey: Sorry, please. I couldn’t sleep last night, so I’m still feeling sleepy.
Gina : What… anyway, that’s not...
Jeffrey (cutting in): “What kept me up last night?” Is that what you wanted to ask?
Gina: No, please.
Jeffrey: I bet it was, though.
He teased, and Gina rolled her eyes slightly.
Gina: Please, we don’t have time for that. Check the response I sent on the project last night so we can proceed. I have a lot to do, and I need to be back in London this weekend.
Jeffrey: Okay, if you say so.
He opened his laptop and checked the messages. After a few back-and-forth discussions, they agreed on the best approach for their client.
Just when they were about to end the call, jeffrey asked,
Jeffrey: Gina , since you’ll be in London this weekend, can we meet and talk?
Gina: Why not? I’m coming because of work and a new contract I’m hoping for, so we can.
Jeffrey: No, please, not about work. I want us to talk… about us.
Gina went quiet for a moment before responding softly,
“Jeffrey, do we really have an us? Because honestly, I don’t think there’s any "us" left to talk about.”
Jeffrey: You may be right, Gina . But there was an us, even if there isn’t one now. I need to get some things off my chest. So please, let’s talk about the old us. I’ll be expecting you this weekend. And please, take care of yourself.
Gina : Hmmm, alright. Take care too.
She held the phone between her shoulder and ear while busily working on her laptop. A faint smile crept across her face. She stood up, went straight to the mirror, and stared at her reflection.
Gina, what is wrong with you?” she asked her duplicate softly.
Jeffrey, on the other hand, was happy. To him, gina was changing, and that only meant he might have a second chance.
Later, Gina broke the news to Ella over the phone.
Ella: You’re falling in love again, baby girl!
Gina: Love? Please, please, please. I just want to hear what he has to say, that’s all.
Ella: I’m not there, but I can feel how lively you’ve become, and that faint smile all over your face? Girl, you’re in love(she teased her)
Gina : Please, I am not.
The few days before the weekend dragged like a snail race. But just as snails eventually entered Noah’s Ark, the weekend finally came.
Gina arrived in London around 4 p.m. She sent a short message to Jeffrey
“I’m in London now, thank you.”
Jeffrey smiled when he read it and replied,
“We thank God for your safety. I’ll pick you up by 7 p.m.”
By 6:40 p.m., Gina was all set, in her blue, short, straight dress, looking effortlessly gorgeous. Her soft, flower scented perfume filled the corridor of her hotel room. She was ready to hear whatever had caused their breakup years ago.
She kept pacing around the room, her hands clasped behind her back, her eyes fixed on the P.O.P. ceiling.
At exactly 7 p.m., her phone buzzed.
“I’m here, please.”
The vibration drew her attention. She glanced at the message, sighed, and picked up her bag. Feeling a bit nervous, she walked down to the car park gracefully.
Jeffrey was standing there, looking every bit the gentleman he was.
“Wow,” gina whispered under her breath.
Jeffrey opened the door for her. She smiled, greeted him politely, and got into the car. He closed the door gently and drove off.
They didn’t speak on the way, perhaps to avoid finishing their conversation before the “date” even began.
When they arrived at the venue, they placed their orders. The atmosphere felt awkward, but Gina’s mind was set on one thing, she wanted to hear the real reason why he left.
Desmond…why did you leave me?
After a moment of silence, she looked at him and asked in a trembling voice,
“ why did you do it? I just want to clear my mind. What was my offence?”
Jeffrey : gina, you know how much I loved you. Even now.....
Gina cut in as she dropped her spoon, wiping her lips gently.
“Even now?” she echoed softly.
Jeffrey: Yes, even now. But it was your father, Gina.
Her expression froze in disbelief.
“My dad? Jeffrey, are you trying to blame my dad now?” she asked, her voice filled with disappointment.
