Chapter 9 - The Past Rises

531 Words
The appearance of the mythical crocodile and the enemy ghosts had a profound effect on Oakhaven. The fear of the "monsters" was replaced by a bewildered reverence. Julian’s standing, previously in jeopardy, was now elevated. The people saw him not as a madman, but as a man connected to the valley’s ancient protectors. Julian, fully recovered, was a changed man. The near-death experience and Elara’s fierce loyalty had softened his edges. He was more open, more willing to trust her with the depths of his secrets. "The crocodile is a deeper magic," he explained to her one evening, sitting by the fire in the great hall of Vanceholt. "It appears in times of great imbalance, a physical manifestation of the valley's will to survive. The ghosts, however, are a new and worrying development." "Enemy soldiers from the Lyra war," Elara mused. "But why appear now? And why attack a grindleworm, and then disappear?" "They were called back, Elara," Julian said, his voice grim. "A dark magic is at play. Someone is summoning the dead." Their conversation turned to Alaric. He had been quiet since the council meeting, a dangerous silence that boded ill. Julian suspected Alaric was the source of the dark magic. "He’s desperate. His political attacks failed, so he's resorted to the black arts." The mystery of the exploding stars continued to confound everyone. The consensus was that the gods were angry. Julian, however, had another theory. He took Elara to a hidden library in the keep, a dusty, ancient room filled with scrolls and tomes that predated the war. He pulled out a worn, leather-bound book with a faded symbol on the cover. "The stars aren't exploding, Elara," he said, opening the book. "They are a map. A map to a lost civilisation, and a source of incredible power." He showed her a drawing in the book, a depiction of a beautiful, ethereal creature with flowing tendrils and glowing eyes. It was the same creature she had seen in the river. The jellyfish. According to the book, they had telekinetic abilities as well, among other abilities, which only added to their weird behavior and overall absurd existence. "They are called the 'Luminai'," Julian explained. "The ancients believed they were manifestations of starlight fallen to earth. They possess immense power, power that can reshape the world, for good or for ill." The story in the book spoke of a time when mankind lived in harmony with the Luminai, using their powers for healing and balance. But mankind’s greed had led to a war, and the Luminai had retreated, disappearing into hidden, mystical places. "The exploding stars are a signal," Julian said, his eyes intense. "They are the Luminai, calling out, saying they are ready to return, ready to help mankind once again. But they will only reveal themselves to those who are pure of heart." Elara felt a thrill of excitement and fear. The simple life of a bee-keeper’s daughter was a distant memory. She was now part of a grand, ancient story, a quest for a mythical creature that could change the fate of the world. Her pure heart opened doorways that she never would've imagined possible before.
