Chapter 3 The Silence Before the Storm The rain had stopped just before dawn. Cold mist rolled across the military base like drifting smoke, wrapping the steel fences, watchtowers, and barracks in a pale gray silence. Soldiers moved through the courtyard with disciplined precision, their boots striking the wet concrete in rhythm. Every sound echoed sharply in the morning air. Inside the command office, Commander Arjun Rathore stood motionless beside the window. His black military coat rested perfectly on his shoulders, medals gleaming faintly beneath the dim light. One hand remained behind his back while the other held a classified file. But his attention was not on the documents. It was on the woman sitting across the room. Maya. His wife. Or at least, the woman the world believed was his wife. She sat quietly on the leather sofa, wearing a cream-colored shawl around her shoulders. Her eyes were lowered toward the untouched cup of tea beside her. Since arriving at the military headquarters two days ago, she had spoken very little. Arjun watched her carefully. There was something unusual about her silence. Most people feared him openly. Others tried desperately to impress him. But Maya did neither. She simply observed everything with calm, unreadable eyes. And that unsettled him. A knock interrupted the silence. “Come in.” Colonel Verma entered quickly, saluting first before speaking. “Sir, the intelligence report from the northern border has arrived.” Arjun took the file without looking away from Maya. “Anything unusual?” The colonel hesitated. “Yes, sir. There are reports of internal information leaks again.” That finally shifted Arjun’s expression. His jaw tightened slightly. “How serious?” “Sensitive troop movement details were intercepted last night. Someone inside is helping them.” A dangerous silence filled the room. Maya slowly looked up. Though she said nothing, she noticed the immediate change in Arjun’s posture. His calm exterior had hardened instantly into something colder. More lethal. Arjun closed the file sharply. “No one leaves the base without my permission.” “Yes, sir.” “And double security around the communications unit.” The colonel saluted again before leaving. As the door closed, Maya spoke for the first time that morning. “You don’t trust the people around you.” Her voice was soft but direct. Arjun turned toward her slowly. “In my position,” he said calmly, “trust gets people killed.” Maya held his gaze for several seconds. “Then why did you marry me?” The question lingered heavily between them. For a moment, even the sounds outside seemed to disappear. Arjun walked toward the desk and placed the file down carefully. “This marriage was necessary.” “Necessary for whom?” “For both of us.” Maya stood up slowly. “That’s not an answer.” “No,” Arjun admitted quietly, “it isn’t.” She studied him carefully, searching for honesty beneath his controlled expression. But Commander Arjun Rathore was a man trained to hide emotions even under gunfire. And Maya was beginning to realize that every answer around him came wrapped in shadows. Before she could speak again, another knock came. This time, a young soldier entered nervously. “Sir… your mother has arrived.” Arjun’s eyes narrowed faintly. “My mother?” “Yes, sir. She insisted on seeing Madam Maya immediately.” Maya looked surprised. Arjun looked annoyed. “Send her in.” Seconds later, an elegant older woman entered the office with graceful confidence. She wore a dark silk saree, her silver jewelry reflecting the morning light. Her sharp eyes instantly landed on Maya. Then, unexpectedly, her expression softened. “So this is the girl.” Maya stood respectfully. “Namaste.” The older woman smiled faintly. “You’re prettier than the photographs.” Arjun exhaled quietly, already sensing trouble. “Mother, why are you here?” “To see my daughter-in-law, obviously.” She ignored him completely and walked toward Maya. “I am Savitri Rathore.” Maya nodded politely. “It’s nice to meet you.” Savitri took Maya’s hand gently. “My son may look human,” she said dryly, “but emotionally, he was born as a military weapon.” Maya nearly smiled. Arjun did not. “Mother.” “What?” Savitri replied calmly. “Am I wrong?” The commander said nothing. Savitri turned back toward Maya with a knowing look. “You must be careful around him. Arjun doesn’t know how to express concern properly. He thinks protecting someone means controlling every detail of their life.” Maya glanced briefly toward Arjun. That sounded painfully accurate. “I can hear you,” Arjun said flatly. “Good,” Savitri replied. “Maybe you’ll learn something.” For the first time since arriving at the base, Maya felt the tension in the room ease slightly. But it did not last long. A loud alarm suddenly echoed across the headquarters. Red emergency lights flashed outside. Every soldier in the corridor immediately began moving. Arjun’s expression changed instantly. Sharp. Focused. Deadly calm. He grabbed his radio. “Report.” A voice answered urgently through static. “Sir, there’s been an explosion near the eastern security gate.” Maya’s eyes widened. Arjun was already moving toward the door. “Stay inside this office,” he ordered without looking back. “I’m coming with you,” Maya said immediately. “No.” “That wasn’t a request.” Arjun stopped. For the first time, irritation flickered across his face. “This is not a game, Maya.” “And I’m not helpless.” Before he could respond, another voice came through the radio. “Possible sniper activity confirmed.” The room went silent. Arjun turned toward Maya slowly. His eyes had become ice. “You will stay here.” Then he left. The heavy door slammed shut behind him. Outside, chaos erupted across the base. Soldiers rushed into defensive positions while emergency sirens screamed through the compound. Smoke rose near the eastern gate where flames still burned from the explosion. Arjun moved through the confusion with frightening control. “Seal all exits.” “Yes, sir!” “Get the wounded to medical immediately.” His sharp eyes scanned every rooftop, every tower, every movement. Then— A gunshot cracked through the air. One soldier collapsed instantly. “Sniper!” someone shouted. Panic spread. But Arjun remained terrifyingly calm. “Find the angle,” he ordered coldly. Another shot fired. This time, sparks exploded beside Arjun’s shoulder as the bullet struck metal behind him. The sniper was aiming for him. Inside the office, Maya heard the distant gunfire. Her heartbeat quickened. Savitri stood beside the window, surprisingly composed. “This happens often?” Maya asked quietly. Savitri’s face darkened. “More than you think.” Another explosion shook the building slightly. Without warning, Maya walked toward the office door. Savitri frowned. “Where are you going?” “To help.” “You heard Arjun.” Maya paused briefly. “Yes,” she said softly. “That’s exactly why I’m going.” Outside, the atmosphere had become warlike. Smoke filled the air. Arjun crouched behind an armored vehicle while soldiers searched surrounding buildings. “Sir,” Colonel Verma reported urgently, “we believe the sniper escaped into the storage sector.” Arjun stood immediately. “I’m going in.” “Sir, it could be a trap.” “It probably is.” Then he walked forward anyway. Because Commander Arjun Rathore never sent his men somewhere he wouldn’t go himself. As he entered the narrow storage corridor, silence swallowed the noise outside. Dark concrete walls. Dim emergency lights. One wrong movement could mean death. Arjun’s hand rested calmly on his weapon. His instincts sharpened. Then— Footsteps. Behind him. He turned instantly, gun raised— And froze. “Maya?” She stood at the corridor entrance breathing heavily. “I told you to stay inside.” “And I ignored you.” His jaw tightened dangerously. “This area isn’t secure.” “Neither is your base.” Before he could answer, a metallic sound echoed nearby. Click. Arjun’s eyes widened slightly. Bomb trigger. He lunged forward instantly, grabbing Maya and pulling her against the wall just as an explosion tore through the corridor. The blast thundered violently. Concrete shattered. Smoke consumed everything. Maya gasped as Arjun shielded her body completely with his own. Debris rained around them. For several seconds, neither moved. Then silence returned. Heavy. Burning. Close. Maya slowly looked up. Arjun’s arm was wrapped protectively around her, his body covering hers from the explosion. Dust covered his uniform, and blood ran faintly down one side of his forehead. “You’re hurt,” she whispered. “It’s nothing.” But Maya could see pain in his eyes despite his calm voice. Distant footsteps approached rapidly. “Sir!” Soldiers rushed into the damaged corridor. Colonel Verma looked horrified. “Commander—” “I’m fine,” Arjun interrupted sharply. Then he looked down at Maya. “Are you injured?” She shook her head slowly. His shoulders relaxed very slightly. Only slightly. But Maya noticed. And somehow, that small moment affected her more than she expected. Back in the medical wing, a doctor cleaned the cut near Arjun’s forehead while he remained completely expressionless. Maya sat nearby quietly. “You should rest,” she said finally. “I don’t rest during security threats.” “You also don’t bleed properly,” she muttered. The doctor nearly choked trying not to laugh. Arjun gave Maya a long look. “You disobey orders often?” “Only bad ones.” Unexpectedly, the corner of his mouth moved slightly. Almost a smile. Almost. Before either could say more, Colonel Verma entered again. “Sir, we found evidence the attack was planned from inside.” Arjun’s expression darkened immediately. “Who?” “We don’t know yet.” The colonel hesitated before continuing. “But someone accessed confidential records connected to Madam Maya.” The room became still. Arjun looked up slowly. “What records?” “Her family background… travel history… financial files.” Maya frowned. “Why would anyone investigate me?” No one answered. But Arjun’s eyes had already sharpened dangerously. Like a man beginning to connect invisible pieces. He dismissed the doctor and stood. “Colonel, leave us.” Once they were alone, Maya crossed her arms. “You think I’m connected to this?” “No.” “But you suspect something.” Arjun walked toward the window silently. For a long moment, he said nothing. Then quietly— “Three months ago, someone attempted to assassinate me during a border operation.” Maya listened carefully. “The attack failed because the enemy received incorrect information at the last second. Since then, someone has been trying to identify who interfered with their plan.” He turned toward her. “And now suddenly, after our marriage, those same people are searching for information about you.” Maya’s heartbeat slowed uneasily. “What are you saying?” Arjun stepped closer. “I’m saying your presence in my life may not be accidental.” The words hit heavily. Maya stared at him in disbelief. “You think I was sent here?” “I think,” he said carefully, “someone wanted us connected.” “And you still married me?” “Yes.” “Why?” For the first time, genuine emotion flickered behind his eyes. Because despite all his caution… Despite all his suspicions… Despite every instinct warning him against attachment… Something about Maya had already begun breaking through the walls he spent years building. But Arjun Rathore was not a man who confessed feelings easily. So instead he said quietly— “Because I needed to know the truth.” Maya looked away slowly. For some reason, that answer hurt more than she expected. Outside, thunder rolled across the darkening sky once again. And somewhere beyond the military walls, unseen enemies continued watching them both. Waiting. Planning. Because the real war had not started yet. And neither Arjun nor Maya understood how deeply their fates were already tied together.
