The Underground Route

Elena’s POV: The clock in the hallway kept ticking, it was two in the morning. The big pack house was very quiet. Outside, the cold wind blew hard through the tall trees. Tree branches scratched against the stone walls. The world out there looked big and scary. Inside Caleb's room, it felt warm. A small lamp gave off a soft orange light, and the fire in the fireplace was dying down. It felt safe away from the storm, but the air felt heavy. Just one hour ago, Marcus broke into this room. Marcus was a bad, dangerous man who thought he ran the pack. He brought guards with him. He tried to trap us, and he put a knife right against my neck. Caleb fought them off, his wolf roared with anger, threw the guards across the room, and slammed Marcus against the wall until he dropped the knife. Caleb won that fight. He threw Marcus out on his ear. But we both knew it was not over. Marcus was a snake in the grass. He would not stop until he stole Lyra’s bloody diary and kicked us out of the pack forever. Right now, Marcus and his men were watching the front doors of the estate. They thought we were trapped upstairs like mice in a box. They thought they had won the game. They had no idea what we were about to do. I stood by the glass window, resting my head against it. My hands were a little cold, but my heart was steady. For two whole years at school, I let people push me around. I spent my whole life hiding, hoping nobody would notice me. Not anymore. I reached deep into my coat pocket and felt the cold iron key. It was the key to the desk drawer, and it was the key to changing everything. Caleb stood by the desk, he had a straight face , he watched the shadows by the door, always ready to protect me. "Is everything ready?" I asked. My voice was quiet, but it did not shake. Caleb looked at me. The scary, cold look on his face melted away just a little bit when he looked my way. He walked over and put his big, warm hand gently on my shoulder. "It is ready," Caleb said low. His voice was a deep rumble that made me feel safe. "The secret path is clear. But once we go down there, there is no turning back. Marcus and his enforcers will hunt us if they find out we are gone." "Let them try," I said, looking right into his eyes. Caleb smiled. It was a dark, dangerous smile that made my chest feel warm. He turned back to the desk, unlocked the drawer with a small click, and pulled out Lyra's diary. Caleb tucked the diary safely inside the deep inner pocket of his coat. Then he grabbed my hand. His fingers were warm and strong . They made me feel like I could face any monster in the world. "Stay right behind me," Caleb whispered, leaning close. "If anyone comes near you, I will tear them apart with my bare hands." We did not go toward the main hallway where Marcus's guards were waiting. Instead, we walked over to the dark corner of the study near the tall bookshelves. Caleb reached behind a heavy velvet curtain on the stone wall. He pushed a hidden wooden latch. *Click.* A small, hidden wooden door swung open smoothly, revealing a dark hole in the wall. It was old, older than the big house itself, built back when the pack was just starting out. A cool, damp breeze rushed out from the dark hole, smelling like an old stone. "What is that?" I asked, looking into the black dark. "An old water drainage tunnel," Caleb explained quietly. "Built during my grandfather's time to keep the lower rooms from flooding in the spring. It goes straight under the big outer wall and comes out near the old storage sheds in the lower valley." "Does Marcus know about it?" I asked, gripping his hand tighter. "No," Caleb said coldly. "Marcus only looks at power, tax papers, and council votes. He forgets that old pack houses have secret histories." "And the guards?" "They are watching the front gates and the main halls," Caleb answered. "They think we are still sitting right here in the study. By the time they realize we are gone, we will already be past the fence." I took a deep breath. This was it. No more hiding in big sweaters. No more running away from bullies. "Let's go," I said. Caleb stepped through the small wooden door first, pulling me gently behind him into the dark tunnel. The tunnel was pitch black. We could not see our own feet. But Caleb knew the way. He held my hand tight, his strong arm guiding me away from the wall so I would not bump my head. Every step we took brought us further away from Marcus, further away from the mean wolves who laughed at me, and closer to the truth. Marcus thought he was the smartest wolf in the pack. He thought he could control everything from the shadows and scare everyone into doing what he wanted. He did not know that the quiet maid he tried to trap was about to bring his whole dirty world crashing down. We walked through the tunnel for what felt like a long time. The sound of our boots hitting the wet stone echoed softly in the tight space. Up above us, we could faintly hear the wind blowing against the trees, but down here, it was quiet and still. My heart started racing , but not out of fear, but out of a fierce, new courage. For the first time in my life, I was not running away. I was walking toward the fight. And I had the most powerful alpha in the pack right beside me, holding my hand every step of the way.
