Elena’s POV:
The sound of Caleb’s continuous banging got me scared.
My hands went weak. They shook so bad I could not hold my sleeves. Leo froze looking so pale. The anger on his face a second ago was completely gone, only sweat and panic stayed..
"Open the door right now, Elena," Caleb said from the hallway. His voice was very low, but firm enough to get us terrified.
I looked at Leo. He looked like a trapped animal caught in a cage. He shook his head fast and pointed his finger at me, mouthing words with no sound at all, begging me not to let his uncle find him hiding in my room.
"Hide me,"Leo whispered. He looked all around the small space for a place to crawl into.
"There is nowhere to hide," I whispered back to him, “You shouldn’t have came here."
Outside in the hall, Caleb moved his feet. The wooden floor made a loud creak under his boots.
"Elena. Open this door right now, or I will smash it down," Caleb warned us.
No way he was bluffing. Caleb was not the one to play games. He never made fake warnings.
If he smashed that door and found his nephew locked inside my room at midnight, my quiet life would be totally over.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm down, and reached out to turn the cold metal lock. The loud click of the lock echoed sharply in the room.
Leo pressed flat against the wall behind the door. Holding his breath and praying he’ll stay hidden in the dark.
I pulled the door open slowly.
Caleb stood in the dark hall. The light above his head made his face look hard and cold. His eyes burned with a fierce, scary light as he looked down at me.
He stared at me for a second. His eyes looking all over my face, searching for signs of tears or fear.
"Why did it take you so long to open the door?" Caleb asked. His voice was cold, but he sounded a bit worried too.
"I was sleeping, Master Caleb," I lied. I kept my eyes glued on to the buttons of his T-shirt.
He squinted with clear disbelief.
He decided to step intothe room. His big size made my small space feel super tiny. My heart hammering in fear.
"You are fully dressed tho” Caleb said. His voice dropped lower as his eyes swept over my clothes. "And something definitely smells wrong in here. It smells like pure panic."
"I’m good," I said quickly, trying to block his path with my body. "Just tired from a long day of cleaning."
Before Caleb could push past me to inspect the room, a sudden movement caught his eye. Leo tried to sneak out quietly, hoping to slip past his uncle while his attention was on me.
It was a terrible mistake.
Caleb moved so fast, too fast. Before Leo could take two steps, Caleb turned around. He grabbed Leo by the collar with force and threw him backward.
Leo stumbled hard, crashing into my little wooden table and smashing a glass of water on the floor. The sharp sound of breaking glass echoed down the hall.
Caleb stepped into the room. He stood right between us, blocking the light with his wide shoulders. He looked ready to kill.
"What are you doing in a maid's room at this time of night, Leo?", Caleb asked. Still maintaining his cool, his voice was super soft and dangerous as he stared down at his shaking nephew.
Nobody said a word. Leo stared at the floor. He looked like he wanted the ground to open up.
Sweat dripped down his face. He looked so weak compared to the mean bully he used to be at school. Caleb kept his eyes locked on him the whole time.
Heavy steps ran fast on the carpet outside.
It was the housekeeper. She heard the glass break and came to check. She froze in her tracks. Her eyes went wide as she looked past Caleb into the room.
A big pack scandal was starting right in front of us.
Just as she gasped, the hall lights flickered and died. The whole place went black. A deep growl shook the floor. Two red eyes glowed right behind Caleb in the dark.
Broken glass all over the floor between my bed and the door.
Leo pushed himself up from the floor and rubbed his sore shoulder where Caleb had shoved him. The proud bully from school was completely gone.
"We were just talking, Uncle," Leo stuttered.
Caleb did not blink. He took one slow step toward his nephew. The air in the room grew very heavy intense . This was the dark, scary side of Caleb that everyone feared.
"Talking," Caleb repeated with obvious sarcasm. “At midnight. In a staff room. Do you take me for a fool, Leo?"
"No," Leo squeaked, holding his hands up defensively . "It is not what it looks like. I just needed to ask her a question about the estate."
"Do not lie to me under my own roof," Caleb snarled, already getting angry.
Caleb got so mad the windows shook in their frames. I stood still by the door. I watched the gentle man turn into a scary beast.
Caleb looked at me. His angry face relaxed just a bit, but his jaw stayed tight.
"Did he force his way in here, Elena?" Caleb asked. He wanted the honest truth.
My gaze bounced between Caleb’s threatening stare and Leo’s pathetic plea. Drop the bomb and Caleb might actually snap his neck. Or worse..look at me with that same cold pity I spent years running from
But I was so tired of lying. I was tired of hiding dark secrets.
I bit my lip hard, my body shaking more, and the small room felt like a trap holding us all.
My hands made tight balls in my pockets so nobody could see them shake. Both men stared right at me. They waited for my words to change our lives forever. The clock ticked loud and slow on the wall, counting down the last few seconds of my quiet life.
