Elena’s POV:
The wood doors shut. The house went quiet.
I stood in the dark hall. My hands were empty because my bag was in the bedroom. My legs felt weak. The air smelled clean and sharp.
Caleb looked at me. His tall body blocked the light. “Stay here," he said. His voice was strong.
He walked down the hall and opened a heavy door. I watched him go into a big, warm room. He turned on a small lamp, lighting up a huge bed.
While he checked the room, I looked around. The walls had dark wood and old pictures of pack bosses. The shadows looked like secrets. How many maids walked here before me, hiding their pasts just to live?
Caleb came back out.
"It is ready," he said. He walked close and looked in my eyes. "It is safe. No one will hurt you."
"Thank you, Caleb," I whispered. I looked at my old shoes. I did not belong here. "I do not get why you help me. I lied. You could kick me out right now."
Caleb jaw got tight. He grabbed my chin and lifted my face. A warm shock ran through me. “You are not just a maid, Elena," he said low. "You are in my house now. What is mine, I protect."
My heart beat fast. I wanted to look away, but I could not move.
"What about Lyra's book?" I asked to break the tension. "When do we read it?"
Caleb's face got dark. He let go of my chin. He reached into his coat and took out the bloody book. The dark stains looked kinda scary in the dim light.
"We read it now," Caleb said. "Before the sun comes up."
He told me to follow him, then He opened his study door. It was a big room with tall shelves, a large desk, and a stone fireplace.
Caleb walked to the desk and put the book down next to a lamp. He turned the light on.
I walked over slowly,My boots clicked on the floor. I stood by him and looked at my sister's name on the cover.
*Lyra.*
She wrote her name hard, almost tearing the page.
"Ready?" Caleb asked. His shoulder brushed mine. He felt like an anchor in this nightmare. took a deep breath. My hands shook. "Open it," I whispered. "We have to know."
Caleb’s fingers touched mine. He opened the front cover. The old pages fell,I leaned close to the light and read the words out loud in a shaky voice.
*"If anyone reads this, I failed,"* Lyra wrote. *"The pack bosses lied. My mom didn’t die of sickness. I found old books in the south room. She was looking into stolen cash and land. They poisoned her tea to keep her quiet and called it an accident."*
I was definitely very scared at this moment, I stopped and looked up at Caleb.
The room felt colder. Caleb did not look surprised, but his face grew very angry. His jaw locked, and his amber eyes flashed. He knew the elders were bad, but reading it from a dead woman's daughter made it real.
"Keep reading," Caleb said in a calm voice.
I swallowed hard and looked back at the bloody page. My hands shook so bad I could hardly hold it.
*"I snuck past the front gates by letting Leo think he liked me,"* Lyra wrote. *"He loves to show off. I played along, let him brag, and used his codes to get inside after dark. I thought I could grab the proof and leave. But I was wrong."*
I got cold sweat on my neck. I remembered Leo acting scared earlier. He was not just worried about getting caught with an unshifted girl. He knew he helped a spy sneak into his uncle's house.
*"They know I am here,"* the diary said. The writing got messy. *"Someone followed me into the west hall. It was not Leo. It was a top guard. He cornered me near the staff rooms. He took my knife, cut me, and tried to take the book back. I got away in the dark and hid this book under a loose floorboard right outside a maid's room. If I do not make it, whoever finds this needs to know the truth. The bosses are dirty."*
The last sentence ended in dry blood.
I let out a gasp and my knees went weak. Caleb grabbed my waist fast and pulled me to his chest so I would not fall.
"She was hunted," I whispered, tears in my eyes. "She was right here, bleeding, and she hid this by my door to help me."
"She is strong, like you," Caleb said low in my ear. He put his hand over mine. "She made it out alive. But now the guards know someone was here."
"What do we do?" I asked, looking in his gold eyes. "If the elders find out, they will kill us both."
"Let them try," Caleb growled. His power filled the room. He closed the book and locked it in the desk drawer with a key. "Your sister showed us the truth. Now we finish what she started."
The key turned with a loud click. The heavy sound echoed in the dark study, sealing our fate with a stolen secret.
I looked up at Caleb, my heart beating fast. "If they find out we have this book, we are dead."
Before he could answer, a loud crash came from downstairs. Glass shattered, and heavy boots started running up the stairs.
Caleb froze, his face turning hard as stone. "They are already here. Who let them in?"
Caleb did not answer my question. His ears twitched as he listened to the fast footsteps coming closer down the hall.
The door of the study shook hard as someone slammed a fist against it from the outside.
"Hide the key," Caleb whispered fast, pressing it into my palm.
Before I could move, the door flew open with a loud bang, and someone stepped out of the dark.
It was the face we feared most.
