The Fall If Marcus

1163 Words
Elena’s POV: The air in the tunnel was cold and It smelled like old mud. Up above us, everyone was sleeping. Down here, it was pitch black. I couldn’t see my own hand, I stayed right behind Caleb, letting him lead the way. For basically all my life, I’ve been rid on, treated poorly, and didn’t matter to anyone, but now I was walking through a dark pipe with the strongest Alpha, carrying a bloody book that could break the pack's government. How did my life get so crazy? "Are you okay, little mouse?" Caleb's voice cut through the dark. He stopped and looked back. His amber eyes shined in the dark. "I’m good," I whispered. "Just cold." Caleb took off his sweater and put it over my shoulders. It was big and warm, smelled a lot like him too. "We’re almost out," Caleb said in a low voice. "Just a few more minutes." "Oh okay ," I said. He smiled a little and moved a piece of hair from my face. "You never have to thank me. You’re my responsibility." Those words “You’re my responsibility” hit me deep. Normally, boys said things like that to trap you. But when Caleb said it, it felt like a heavy shield. It meant no one would ever hurt me again. We started walking again. The tunnel went up. After a while I saw gray light ahead, fresh air hit my face. "That is the exit," Caleb whispered. "It leads to the old shed behind the stables. Marcus's guards never check back here." Caleb reached the end first. He pushed a heavy iron grate covered in vines, then he climbed out and reached for my hands. I grabbed his wrists, and he lifted me out.? Old tools hung on the walls and through the dirty window, I could see the conference room glowing with yellow light, the emergency meeting was starting. Caleb pulled Lyra’s diary out then he looked at me with a serious face. "We have to run quickly across the yard to the conference," Caleb said. "If Marcus's guards see us, they’ll try to stop us. "I’m ready," I said. Caleb kicked the door open and we ran so fast like our lives depended on it, because they did. Voices drifted on the wind. The meeting had started. The old leaders were inside, waiting to hear Marcus lie about the money. If we didn't get inside, Marcus would win. "Run," Caleb whispered, he grabbed my hand, and we ran. My boots stumped in the mud, my breath dropped and my legs burned, but I did not stop. I watched Caleb, he moved fast pulling me along. Near the door of the room, two of Marcus’s guards stepped out from behind a stone pillar. They held heavy swords. When they saw us, their eyes went wide. "Stop right there!" one shouted, drawing his sword. I gasped. Caleb did not slow down. A loud, angry growl tore out of his chest. It was the sound of an angry alpha. The two guards froze, the power coming off Caleb hit them like so hard that they dropped their swords and backed away against the wall. They did not dare fight their Alpha. We ran past them. Caleb slammed his shoulder against the wooden doors , pushing them open. Then we stepped in. We stood in the quiet hall, breathing hard.I looked down , Caleb’s sweater was still on my shoulders. My face was red, but we made it. Down the hall was the main conference room, we heard Marcus speaking. His smooth voice echoed down the hall. "...as you can see from these papers," Marcus said, sounding fake-sad, "our young Alpha has used pack money. We must stop him before he ruins everything." I looked up at Caleb, his jaw was tight, and his eyes flashed. He pulled Lyra's diary from his coat. The dark blood on the cover looked bright under the lights. "Are you ready to end this?" Caleb asked softly. I touched the iron key in my pocket. I thought of the two years of being hidden, the kids who laughed at me and all that pain turned into strength. "I’m ready," I said. Caleb put a warm hand on my back, guiding me toward the council room doors, ready to smash Marcus's lies. The double doors were made of dark wood with heavy brass handles. Marcus was still talking inside. "We must vote now," Marcus said. "Before sunrise, we strip him of his title." Caleb did not wait. He raised his hand and open the door with a loud *bang*. Every head in the room turned. The room was huge with a giant stone table. Twelve old pack elders sat in big chairs. At the front, by a stand covered in papers, stood Marcus. Marcus froze. His face went pale, His mouth stayed open like a fish. For a second, nobody breathed. The old men stared at us. They looked at Caleb, and then at me in his big sweater . "What’s going on ?" an elder shouted, standing up. “Why don’t we hear from Marcus” Caleb suggested Marcus swallowed hard, put on a fake smile, and pointy "Do not listen to them!" Marcus yelled. "They broke out like criminals! Caleb has lost his mind, and he brought this outsider here to mock us!" Some old men started nodding. Marcus thought he could win by shouting. He had no idea what was in Caleb's coat. Caleb did not yell. He walked slowly into the room, keeping me beside him. His hand stayed on my back. Our boots clicked on the stone floor. The room went totally quiet, feeling the Alpha power. "You talk a lot about rules and missing money Marcus," Caleb said, stopping at the table. But you forgot one thing." "I forgot nothing!" Marcus snapped, his face turning red. "The records show—" "The records are fake," Caleb said. Caleb reached into his coat. He pulled out Lyra's diary and slammed it down flat onto the stone table right in front of Marcus. The heavy thud echoed in the room. Marcus stared at the book. His eyes went wide. He knew that book. "What is that?" an elder asked, leaning forward. "That," Caleb said in a dangerous growl, "is the truth. Written by the girl whose mother you poisoned two years ago." Marcus jumped across the table to grab the book. "Lies! Burn it!" Before Marcus could touch it, Caleb moved fast. He caught Marcus by the wrist and squeezed. A loud *crack* echoed in the hall. Marcus screamed and fell to the floor, holding his broken wrist. The whole room stood up in shock. "Read it," Caleb told the old men. "Read every word. Then tell me who the real criminal is." I stepped forward, looking down at the bloody book, and then up at the men. The game was over. Marcus's time was up.
