The Secret Breaks

Elena’s POV: The room went quiet. I could hear my heart beat fast in my chest. Leo stared at me like he saw a ghost. He looked at my face, then down to the tray in my hands. My feet felt stuck. I wanted to turn and run, but my body wouldn’t move. "Elena?" Leo whispered in shock . Before I could force a single word past my teeth, heavy footsteps cut across the hardwood behind the desk. Caleb stepped out into the open, his gaze drifting from Leo’s face to mine, then he frowned. 'Do you know each other?' Caleb asked . Leo blinked hard and looked at his uncle. You could see the panic in his eyes.He tried to laugh and waved his hand. "Know her? Of course not," Leo lied, his voice shaky. She just dropped the tray and scared me, that’s all. Caleb didn’t look like he believed him. He turned his eyes back to me, looking at my face with doubt. "Clean this up” Caleb said pointing at the tea on the floor. ‘Okay, Master Caleb,' I choked out, keeping my eyes glued to my shoes. I dropped hard to my knees, fumbling blindly for my cloth. My fingers were shaking so badly I could barely wrap them around the fabric. I scrubbed the spilled tea, feeling the weight of two pairs of eyes burning holes right into the back of my neck Leo cleared his throat. He shifted his feet. "Anyways Uncle," Leo said fast, trying to make Caleb look at him again. We were talking about my money issues. We need to fix this before my father finds out. "We’ll talk about your failures later," Caleb said unbothered. He didn’t look at Leo. His eyes stayed on me until I finished cleaning and stood back up with the tray. "Leave us," Caleb told me. I didn’t wait. I turned around and walked as fast as I could out of the room. I closed the doors behind me. I took big breaths in the empty hall. I thought I was safe in this house. I thought hiding in this big estate would keep my past away forever. Now, my past had walked right through the front door. Later that night, the house was quiet. Someone knocked soft on my door. I opened it just a little bit, then my heart skipped a beat. It was Leo standing in the dark hallway. The charming schoolboy mask was completely shredded, leaving just raw panic and ugly desperation. 'We need to talk.' He didn't even wait for an invite, shoving right past my shoulder and storming straight into my room I stepped back until my legs hit my small bed. "Get out of my room Leo," I said. I tried to make my voice sound strong. "Keep your voice down," Leo hissed. He shut the door fast and locked it. He looked around my small room and sighed . "So this is how the great unshifted ghost lives now. You scrub floors for my uncle." "It is honest work," I answered. I stared right back at him. "It is much better than playing cruel games like you do." Leo took a step closer. His face twisted with rage. "You almost ruined everything back there. If my uncle finds out who you are, or that we used to be together, he’ll ask questions I won’t be able to answer ." I do not care about your problems," I said. "You made it very clear what I meant to you. Now leave before I call for help." Leo let out a harsh laugh. "You think anyone here will help you? One word to my uncle about your past, and he will throw you out into the snow." "He is not like you," I whispered. Even as I said it, my heart beat wild in my chest. "You think you know him?" Leo mocked me. He stepped right up to my face. "Caleb is a cold monster. He does not care about stray maids. He is just using you for work." Before Leo could say another word, a heavy fist hammered against the wood of my door. We both froze in place. "Elena," a deep and dangerous voice rang out from the dark hall. It was Caleb. "Open the door right now." The sound of his voice sent chills down my spine. The secret was collapsing around us, and there was no way out.
