Elena’s POV:
The next morning, we headed back to Caleb’s mansion.
I took a deep breath, the scary knot in my tummy finally went away.
Caleb kept his arm around my waist, walking slowly so I could keep up. He guided me down to my room.
"Don’t think about what happened Elena, Marcus got what he earned," Caleb said , his tone steady and cold. "He thought he could hide behind rules and paperwork. He forgot that the truth always comes out."
Caleb closed the door behind us. He gently touched his big sweater on my shoulders.
"Let's take this off," he whispered, helping me pull my arms out of the sleeves. He folded it over a chair. I felt a quick little chill without the heavy wool, but Caleb pulled me over to the corner of my bed right in front of the fire.
He sat down first and pulled me onto his lap so I was curled against his chest. His arms wrapped around me tight, keeping me safe where nothing could hurt me.
For a long time, we did not talk. We just sat in the warmth, listening to the crackle of the fire and the steady thumping of Caleb's heart. His hand rubbed slow circles up and down my back, melting away all my tight muscles.
Caleb looked down at me with a soft, tired smile. He reached up and gently brushed a hair from my cheek. Then he cupped the back of my head, pulling me close until his lips touched my hair.
"You are safe now, Elena," he whispered, sounding completely sure. "Nobody will ever make you hide again."
I closed my eyes and let out a long breath as my walls crumbled. I pressed my face against his chest, breathing in his warm scent.
I thought about the bad times with Leo back at school. I had trusted him for two whole years, thinking he actually cared about me.
Then I heard the truth, I found out that It was all a cruel bet just to get close to my sister, Lyra. I remembered when I confronted and slapped him at his party, but he just laughed at me in front of everyone and called me a weak nobody.
Leo was cruel and fake. Caleb was nothing like him. Caleb's loyalty was real.
When the guards cornered us and the council tried to crush us, Caleb did not think twice. He stepped right in, broke down doors with his bare hands, and stood in front of me like a wall of stone. He broke Marcus's arm and told everyone I was his equal.
Caleb never disgraced me , Caleb never let me feel less human or remind me that i was wolf less.
I squeezed my arms around his waist, burying my fingers in his shirt as a wave of thankfulness washed over me.
"Penny for your thoughts, little mouse," Caleb whispered, feeling me shift. "You are miles away. Are you still thinking about the council room?"
I shook my head against his chest. "No. I was thinking about my old life... before I came here."
Caleb's body went stiff for a second, his hand pausing. His eyes turned dark with anger whenever my past came up.
"Leo?" he asked, his voice coming out like a low growl.
"Yeah," I whispered. "I was thinking about how he treated me... how he used me in that cruel bet and laughed at me in front of everyone."
Caleb let out an angry growl, but he let me speak, listening quietly.
"I used to think people only stayed if you were useful," I continued, my voice shaking a little. "I thought you always had to hide so you wouldn't get hurt."
Caleb shifted and held my face , his thumb brushing my cheek. His eyes were fierce and intense and full of protection.
"Listen to me, Elena," Caleb said, deep and strong. "Leo was a fool who did not deserve a second of your time. You don't have to hide anymore. If anyone tries to hurt you again, they answer to me."
His words grounded me, cutting through the old shadows of my mind.
"I know," I whispered softly, touching his hand. "Thank you, Caleb."
A faint smile touched his lips. He rested his forehead against mine for a moment, letting the quiet settle around us.
"Get some rest, little mouse," he murmured, his breath warm against my skin. "You're safe here."
He pulled back, letting me curl up on the bed as the fire crackled, keeping the room warm. I closed my eyes, listening to the steady beat of his heart nearby.
He did not say anything else for a long time, but I could feel his eyes watching me closely as I lay against him.
I did not need to look up to know he was staring at me.
The quiet between us felt peaceful, like a storm finally stopping. Every now and then, his thumb brushed in a slow circle against my cheek, keeping me calm when my mind tried to drift away.
Caleb looked down at me with a soft, quiet expression. He let out a breath that brushed against my hair.
"You really think you are just a nobody, do you, little mouse?" he whispered, his deep voice rumbling against my chest.
“You survived a school that tried to break you. You stood right in front of a bad council and did not run away. You have no idea how strong you really are."
I blinked slowly, my eyes feeling very heavy. I wanted to ask him what he meant, but I was too tired to talk. My brain just wanted to shut down and rest.
Outside, the night was completely quiet and still. There was no more shouting, no more mean whispers, and no more fear, it started to feel like home again.
The steady beat of his heart pulled me under, and wrapped in his warmth by the fire, I finally let go of my fear and drifted off to sleep.
