  EVE   The car ride was too quiet. Even the hum of the engine sounded wrong, like it knew something I didn't. The driver didn't say a word, not even when I climbed into the back seat and asked where we were going. He just gave a curt nod and pulled away from Emma's apartment like a man following strict instructions.   At first, I assumed he was taking me home. That made sense. My mother had called a dozen times—maybe she wanted to talk, maybe she was furious, maybe both. But after ten minutes on the road, when we sped past the turn that led toward the Callahan estate, a slow unease began to coil in my stomach.
