The words slipped out before I could stop them, and instantly, everything about him shifted.
Roman stopped walking. His jaw tightened.

I shouldn't have cared. God, I shouldn't have. But relief slid through me so fast, so unexpectedly, that it made me furious with myself.
I stared ahead, pretending his answer didn't matter, pretending I wasn't unraveling inside. Of course, Roman noticed. He always noticed.
His voice came softer this time, low and steady, but no less commanding. "Stop overthinking. You're safe here."
