  EVE   The pain came out of nowhere. One second, I was asleep—dreaming about nothing in particular—and the next, it felt like someone had reached inside me and twisted everything. A sharp, unbearable ache radiated through my stomach, crawling down my legs and up my spine until I thought I might pass out from it.   I groaned, curling up in bed, hoping it would stop. But it didn't. It only got worse. My breath came in quick, shallow bursts, and before I knew it, I was rolling off the bed, hitting the floor with a dull thud.
