MILESTONE
CHAPTER TWO
THE NAME ON THE PAPER
Elena did not sleep that night.
She remained on her bed with the small piece of paper lying beside her, staring at the sentence again and again.
When you are ready to know the truth, find Richard Vale.
The words seemed to become heavier every time she read them.
Who was Richard Vale?
Why had her mother hidden his name?
And why had Aunt Margaret reacted as though hearing the name alone could bring danger into the house?
Elena reached for her phone and searched the name online.
Hundreds of results appeared, but one immediately caught her attention.
Richard Vale — Founder and Chairman of Vale Industries.
Elena sat upright.
She opened the page.
A photograph appeared on the screen.
It was the same man from Arthur's photograph.
Richard Vale was now in his late fifties, but even after all those years, Elena recognized him immediately.
The article described him as one of the most successful businessmen in the country. Vale Industries owned hotels, technology companies, construction firms, and investment companies across several cities.
Elena stared at the screen.
"This can't be real."
Her mother had known one of the richest men in the country?
Why had she never said anything?
Elena continued reading.
Richard Vale had built his company from almost nothing and had become famous for turning small businesses into major corporations.
There was another detail that caught Elena's attention.
Richard had a daughter.
Amelia Vale.
Elena frowned.
She had no idea what any of this meant.
She searched for her mother instead.
There was almost nothing.
Claire Carter had lived a quiet life. She had never appeared in newspapers or public records connected to Richard Vale.
Elena closed the browser.
She wanted answers, but she also remembered Arthur's warning.
Everyone keeps secrets.
She finally fell asleep shortly before sunrise.
The next morning, Margaret was already awake.
Elena entered the kitchen.
Her aunt didn't look at her.
"Sit."
Elena slowly sat at the table.
Margaret placed a cup of tea in front of her.
"I need you to listen to me."
Elena remained silent.
"I should have told you some things years ago."
"About my mother?"
Margaret nodded.
"Your mother was not always the person you thought she was."
Elena's stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
Margaret sighed.
"Claire made mistakes."
"What kind?"
"The kind that followed her for years."
Elena leaned forward.
"Did she know Richard Vale?"
Margaret looked away.
"Yes."
"How?"
"I don't know everything."
"Then tell me what you know."
Margaret was quiet.
Finally, she said, "Your mother worked for him."
Elena blinked.
"Worked for him?"
"Many years ago."
"What did she do?"
"She was involved in one of his companies."
Elena stared at her.
"Why didn't she ever tell me?"
"Because she left."
"Why?"
Margaret shook her head.
"That's something you have to ask Richard."
Elena stood.
"I will."
Margaret immediately looked alarmed.
"No."
"You just told me to ask him."
"I told you that because I know you won't stop until you have answers. But meeting him is different."
"Why?"
"Because powerful people don't like old secrets returning."
Elena's voice became quiet.
"What secret?"
Margaret didn't answer.
"Please."
"I don't know."
Elena could tell she was lying.
But before she could push further, Margaret stood.
"You're going to school."
"Not until you tell me."
"Elena."
"Please."
Margaret's eyes softened.
For the first time, Elena saw fear in them.
"I promised your mother."
"What did you promise?"
"That I would protect you."
Elena swallowed.
"From Richard?"
Margaret didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
At school, Elena couldn't concentrate.
During mathematics, she stared at the same problem for nearly twenty minutes.
Sophie noticed.
"Something happened."
Elena looked at her.
"I found something."
"What?"
Elena pulled out the paper.
Sophie read it.
Her eyes widened.
"Richard Vale?"
Elena nodded.
"You know who he is?"
"Everyone knows who he is."
"I didn't."
Sophie stared at her.
"Elena, Vale Industries owns half the businesses in this city."
"I know."
"Why would your mother tell you to find him?"
"I don't know."
Sophie lowered her voice.
"Are you going to?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"I don't know."
Sophie took Elena's hand.
"Whatever this is, you don't have to handle it alone."
Elena smiled.
"Thank you."
After classes ended, Elena went to the library.
She found the same table where she had spoken to Arthur.
He was not there.
She waited.
Ten minutes.
Twenty.
Nothing.
She finally decided to leave.
As she reached the door, she heard someone behind her.
"You came back."
Elena turned.
Arthur stood there.
"I need answers."
"I expected that."
"You knew my mother."
"Yes."
"How?"
Arthur sighed.
"Claire and Richard were close once."
Elena's heart skipped.
"How close?"
"Closer than friends."
Elena stared at him.
"You mean they were together?"
Arthur nodded.
"Before you were born."
The room suddenly felt smaller.
"Was Richard my father?"
Arthur didn't answer.
"Please."
He looked at her with sadness.
"I don't know."
Elena's heart sank.
"But you knew them."
"I did."
"Then tell me what happened."
Arthur walked toward the window.
"Claire worked with Richard when Vale Industries was still growing. They believed they could build something that would change the city."
"What happened?"
"Someone betrayed them."
"Who?"
"We never discovered the whole truth."
Elena frowned.
"What was stolen?"
Arthur looked at her.
"Something far more valuable than money."
"What?"
"The company's original ownership records."
Elena blinked.
"Ownership records?"
"Yes."
Arthur continued.
"Before Vale Industries became what it is today, Claire and Richard were partners in the first company they built."
Elena felt confused.
"Then why does Richard own everything?"
Arthur hesitated.
"Because Claire disappeared from the company."
"She gave up her shares?"
"No."
Elena's eyes widened.
"Then what happened to them?"
"That's the question."
Arthur reached into his coat and handed her an old folder.
Elena opened it.
Inside were photocopies of documents.
Her mother's name appeared on several pages.
Claire Carter — Co-Founder.
Elena stared at the words.
Her mother had been a co-founder of Vale Industries.
It was impossible.
"You have to be careful with those."
Elena looked up.
"Why?"
"Because if someone realizes you have them, they may try to take them."
"Who?"
Arthur's expression became serious.
"I don't know."
Elena closed the folder.
"Then I need to speak to Richard."
Arthur nodded.
"There's a charity event tonight at the Vale Foundation."
"Will he be there?"
"Yes."
"How do I get inside?"
Arthur smiled slightly.
"I can get you in."
That evening, Elena stood outside the Vale Foundation wearing the only formal dress she owned.
The building was enormous.
Luxury cars filled the entrance.
People in expensive clothes walked through the golden doors.
Elena suddenly felt out of place.
Arthur approached her.
"You look nervous."
"I am."
"Don't be."
"Easy for you to say."
He smiled.
"Remember why you're here."
Elena nodded.
They entered.
Inside, the hall was filled with businessmen, politicians, journalists, and celebrities.
A large chandelier hung above them.
Elena looked around.
Then she saw him.
Richard Vale stood near the center of the room, surrounded by important guests.
He looked exactly like the man in the photograph.
Older.
More powerful.
But unmistakable.
Elena's heart began beating rapidly.
Arthur placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Are you ready?"
"No."
"Good."
Elena looked at him.
"Why is that good?"
"Because people who aren't afraid of anything usually don't understand what they're facing."
Arthur walked away.
Elena took a deep breath and approached Richard.
She stopped a few feet away.
"Mr. Vale."
Richard turned.
His eyes landed on her.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then the color disappeared from his face.
"Claire."
Elena froze.
"My name is Elena."
Richard stared at her.
"I know."
"You know me?"
His expression became guarded.
"Who are you?"
"Elena Carter."
Richard stepped backward.
People nearby began noticing.
"Who told you to come here?"
"My mother."
Richard's eyes changed.
"Your mother is dead."
"I know."
He looked around quickly.
"Where did you get my name?"
Elena pulled the paper from her bag.
"My mother left this for me."
Richard read it.
His hands began trembling.
"You shouldn't have this."
"Why?"
He looked at her.
"Because Claire promised me it would never be found."
Elena's heart raced.
"What wouldn't be found?"
Richard looked toward the exit.
"We can't talk here."
"Then where?"
"Tomorrow morning. Nine o'clock."
He wrote an address on a card.
Elena took it.
"What is this place?"
"My old office."
"Why not now?"
Richard's expression became serious.
"Because someone is watching us."
Elena looked around.
Everyone appeared to be enjoying the event.
Then she noticed a man standing near the far wall.
He was dressed in black.
He was staring directly at her.
The moment their eyes met, he turned away.
Elena's stomach tightened.
"Who is that?"
Richard followed her gaze.
His face became tense.
"Leave."
"What?"
"Leave now."
"Why?"
"Elena, listen to me."
His voice dropped.
"If you want to know the truth about your mother, come to the old office tomorrow."
He paused.
"But come alone."
Elena looked at him.
"Why?"
Richard leaned closer.
"Because the person who destroyed your mother's life may still be looking for you."
Elena felt frozen.
Before she could ask another question, Richard walked away.
She stood there holding the card.
A few minutes later, she left the building.
Outside, the night air felt colder than before.
She looked at the address.
42 Blackwood Avenue.
She placed the card inside her bag.
Then she heard footsteps behind her.
Elena turned.
Nobody was there.
She continued walking.
The footsteps returned.
Faster.
She looked back again.
A black car was parked across the street.
Its windows were dark.
Elena's heart pounded.
She walked faster.
The car remained still.
Then, just as she reached the corner, the engine started.
Elena ran.
She didn't stop until she reached the bus station.
When she finally looked back, the car was gone.
She pulled out her phone and called Sophie.
"Sophie?"
"Elena? What's wrong?"
"I think someone followed me."
"What?"
"I'll explain tomorrow."
"Where are you?"
"At the station."
"Stay there. I'm coming."
Elena ended the call.
She looked at the card again.
42 Blackwood Avenue.
Tomorrow at nine.
For years, Elena had believed her greatest challenge was surviving poverty.
Now she realized that poverty might have been the smallest part of her story.
Her mother had been a co-founder of one of the biggest companies in the country.
Richard Vale knew her.
Arthur knew her mother.
Someone was watching her.
And somewhere in the past was a secret powerful enough to frighten all of them.
Elena put the card safely into her pocket.
Whatever happened next, she would not run.
She had spent her entire life being told that her circumstances defined her.
Tomorrow, she would finally discover whether that was true.
And for the first time, Elena understood the meaning of the word her mother had written years ago.
