Chapter 1- The Road Back

726 Words
The roar of my motorcycle used to mean freedom. Now it only reminded me of the family that betrayed me. I tightened my grip on the handlebars as I rode the quiet roads outside Oakridge. Five years ago, I left the Iron Vipers with one bag and a broken heart. I swore I would never go back. I should have known the past would not stay away. My name is Riley Kane. I used to be the princess of the Iron Vipers motorcycle club. The only girl of my generation. Everyone spoiled me. My dad was a leader. The club was my whole world. But that world broke. I still remember the night I was sixteen. Jax pulled me behind the clubhouse after a race. His hands were shaking when he touched my face. “I’ve wanted this for so long,” he whispered. Then he kissed me. It was my first real kiss. Warm and full of promise. Knox and Ryder were the same. Knox kissed me hard and wild after we won a bet. Ryder was gentle. He held my hand under the stars and told me he would always protect me. Then Dad married Jezebel. She never said bad things about me directly. At dinner she would sigh and say, “Poor Riley. She had so much attention growing up. Sharing must be hard for her.” Everyone would nod and look at me with pity. Somehow I became the selfish one. Lila learned from her mother. She smiled sweetly but took my favorite jacket and wore it in front of the club. When I complained, Jezebel simply said, “Girls should share, Riley.” The men agreed. Even my three friends started to change. I was seventeen when it hurt the most. I planned a birthday ride. Jax said yes. But when the bikes started, he put Lila on the back of his bike. “She really wants to go,” he told me. Knox and Ryder followed. They left me standing there alone. Jezebel watched from the porch with a small smile. That night I cried until I had no tears left. On my eighteenth birthday I made my decision. I packed my bag while everyone slept. I took my old bike and rode away. No note. No goodbye. For five years I built a new life in Oakridge. I worked at Mike’s Bike Shop fixing motorcycles and cars. At night I ran Ghost Runs with a small group of girls. Last week we raced through heavy rain to deliver insulin to a sick child. The mother cried and hugged me when we arrived. That work gave me purpose. I was no longer the club princess. I was Riley — strong and free. One afternoon I was under an old truck at the shop when the bell rang. I came out with greasy hands. Jax stood there. He was bigger now. Harder. The president patch sat on his leather vest. His eyes locked on me. “Riley,” he said quietly. My heart beat fast but I kept my face cold. “What do you want?” “Come back home. The club needs you.” I laughed once. “Home? You lost that right five years ago. You left me alone on my birthday. You chose Lila and Jezebel over me again and again.” Jax looked down. “Things were complicated. Jezebel kept talking. We thought you would come back.” “Beauty didn’t matter when you left me standing there,” I said. My voice was ice. “I’m not the girl you remember. I have my own life now. I have Ghost Runs. I help people without asking for anything.” He stepped closer. The smell of leather and engine oil hit me. Old memories came back. “Your dad is sick. The Shadow Reapers are attacking us. Jezebel is still playing her games. We need you.” I turned away. “That is not my problem.” But as Jax started his bike and rode away, I felt the pull. The road was calling me back. That night I sat on my bike by the river. I thought about Dad. About Jezebel’s sweet poison. About the three boys who broke my heart. I was Biker Princess No More. But maybe the story was not finished yet.
