Kayla's POV
The walk to the kill site felt longer than it should have. Every muscle in my back still throbbed from the lashes, but that wasn't what was putting me on edge. Torran seemed oddly nervous. He kept pace beside me but stayed silent. When the tree line broke, we saw the area ahead. It was roped off and guarded.
"How bad is it, Torran?" I finally asked.
"Bad enough where I am glad you were there with me when it attacked us," Torran replied.
Beta Derek stood just outside the inner perimeter, speaking to a robed Council representative. Seeing him made my stomach turn. I hadn't expected the Council to take interest. A council representative meant this death was a cause of concern to them.
