As I said, I never minded dogs, and have never been feared of them, and perhaps because of that, dogs have never bothered me. Mr Lunan’s hounds were no exception, so while others shunned their broad, slavering jaws, I sought them out, clapped their rough fur and fed them with whatever I could find. In that farmstead of mixed emotions, Mr Lunan’s dogs were my faithful friends. I met the mastiffs next morning, washed the dried blood from their muzzles and thanked them for performing their duties like faithful soldiers. They accepted my thanks, sniffed me all over and returned to their patrolling. I had come south to escape the whistling, yet in Kingsinch, my attitude had altered.
