Blood Bound

The first tendrils of dawn painted the sky with soft hues of rose and gold as Asterea stepped onto her balcony. The vampire kingdom was stirring to life, a vibrant tapestry of activity unfolding beneath her. Townsfolk bustled about, their footsteps echoing on the cobblestone streets as they hurried to their shops and workshops. The baker opened his doors, the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked bread wafting through the air, mingling with the sweet scent of blooming flowers. Shopkeepers unlocked their storefronts, displaying their wares, while food vendors set up their carts, preparing an array of delectable treats. Nobles, dressed in elegant attire, made their way to the court, their faces composed and purposeful. It was a stark contrast to the quiet solitude of the night, a burst of energy that both energized and grounded Asterea. She watched the scene with a sense of quiet satisfaction, a feeling of belonging to this vibrant kingdom. Her ladies-in-waiting entered her room, their movements graceful and efficient. Asterea opted for a comfortable yet elegant ensemble: a short-sleeved, navy blue V-neck summer dress, fitted at the top and flowing at the bottom, its fabric a soft, breathable material. Today was a special day, her brother Atlas's Alpha coronation, and she wanted to feel both comfortable and presentable. Her parents would be staying briefly to help with the transition, then moving to the vampire kingdom for a short time until Asterea's wedding, ensuring she had all the support she needed. As her ladies styled her hair into long, flowing curls, with the front pieces braided back from her face, Asterea sipped her morning iced pistachio latte, the sweet, nutty flavor a welcome start to her day. They applied a touch of mascara and eyeliner to accentuate her eyes, and a swipe of matte dark garnet red lipstick to her lips, adding a pop of color. Finally, ready for the day, Asterea made her way down to the grand hall, where Renley was waiting with her parents. A warm smile lit up her face as she saw them. "Mom! Dad!" she exclaimed, rushing forward to hug them both tightly. They embraced her warmly, their eyes filled with love and pride. After a moment of affectionate greetings, she turned to Renley, her hand slipping into his. "How are you both?" Ronan asked, his gaze shifting between Asterea and Renley. "We're well, Dad," Asterea replied, her cheeks flushing slightly. Currently, she and Renley were still sleeping in separate bedrooms, a fact that both excited and frustrated them. The anticipation of their upcoming wedding was a constant undercurrent in their interactions. Seraphina, her eyes twinkling with amusement, couldn't resist teasing them. "Just one more week, and you won't have to sleep apart anymore," she said, her voice laced with playful innuendo. Asterea's blush deepened, while Ronan's brow furrowed slightly. "We should get going," he said firmly, his voice brooking no argument. Seraphina nodded in agreement. "Atlas will have our heads if we're late." Asterea seated beside Renley, their hands intertwined, a silent source of comfort. On the stage before them, her parents, Ronan and Seraphina, stood with Atlas and Quinn, the air thick with anticipation. The Alpha coronation was in full swing, a powerful ceremony steeped in tradition. Asterea watched with a mix of pride and nostalgia as her father, his voice resonating with authority, made a small cut on Atlas's hand. Atlas, his expression solemn and determined, swore his commitment to the Falling Moon Pack, pledging to be the strongest, wisest, and most compassionate Alpha he could be. A wave of emotion washed over Asterea as she witnessed her brother's transition, a poignant reminder of the bond they shared. Then, it was Quinn's turn. Seraphina, her eyes filled with love and pride, performed the ritual, and Quinn, her voice clear and strong, swore her oath as the new Luna, promising to stand by Atlas's side and protect their pack. The ceremony was beautiful and moving, a testament to the strength and unity of the werewolves. But as Quinn spoke her vows, a strange feeling began to stir within Asterea. A wave of nausea washed over her, and her head grew light and fuzzy. The vibrant colors of the ceremony seemed to blur at the edges, and a faint tremor ran through her body. Renley, ever attuned to her through their bond, felt her distress. His gaze sharpened, his voice laced with concern. "Asterea, are you alright?" he asked, his hand tightening around hers. "I… I don't know," she murmured, her brow furrowed. "I feel… off." The ceremony ended, and Renley, his eyes never leaving her, carefully escorted Asterea inside the pack house. He guided her to a nearby bed, his touch gentle and reassuring. "Just sit down for a moment," he said softly. "I'll get you some water." But the moment Asterea settled onto the bed, the strange feeling intensified, escalating into a terrifying ordeal. She gasped for air, her throat tightening as if an invisible hand was squeezing the life from her. She doubled over in pain, her body wracked with spasms, her lungs burning with each desperate breath. "I can't… breathe," she choked out, her voice barely audible. It felt as if she were dying, her body betraying her in the most agonizing way. Yet, deep in her heart, she knew what it was. Another vampire was being decimated. She could feel their pain, their terror, their life force slipping away. And there was nothing she could do to stop it. The agony continued, each second stretching into an eternity. Asterea writhed on the bed, her cries muffled, her body trembling uncontrollably. All the while, Renley called her name, his voice filled with panic and desperation, urging her to breathe, trying to soothe her pain. She faintly heard him calling for her parents and Atlas, their voices a distant echo in the storm of her own suffering. She saw their faces circle around her, their expressions a mixture of fear and confusion. The pack doctor rushed forward, injecting her with something warm, a soothing liquid that spread through her veins, easing the sharpest edges of the pain. As a strange calmness began to settle over her, a heavy lethargy pulling her under, she felt something… snap. A sudden, sharp severance, like a thread breaking. The agonizing connection to the dying vampire was gone. Darkness closed in, swallowing her whole. The last thing she saw was Renley's face, his eyes filled with a raw, primal fear that mirrored the terror she had just experienced. Renley set in a corer chaise, in Asterea's childhood bedroom watching over her as she slept. He refused to leave her. Her parents had insisted many times that he try and get some sleep while she was still sedated but, he couldnt bring himself to leave her. It had been hours since the incident had happened yet, it seemed like it wasnt going to stop. For a few hours she would be fine but then she would break out in a cold sweat and start gasping for air, her body would shake, and she would feel ice cold. He could hear her heartbeat going so fast he worried it would burst. Why was this happening. They were waiting on word from Ivar and Lilith to see if anything was going on in the vampire kingdom that could be affecting Asterea this way. Renley pushed a few stray hairs out of her face; she felt clammy and cold. His heart clenched seeing her like this. He was falling more in love with her every single day. He had tried not to. He had no intentions of becoming the king. He knew his father had plans but, Renley wanted nothing to do with those plans. However, every time he looked into her eyes he knew there was no way he could reject her. He would be king but, not the king his father wanted him to be but, the king Asterea needed him to be. He would be nothing like his father and would love her unconditionally and their children too if and when they had any. Renley didnt know how he was going to get out from under his father and the control he wanted to have on him but, he knew he was going to do anything and everything he could to save Asterea from his father and the cruelty he had suffered growing up. He would not allow that man to destroy his happiness any longer. Renley looked up as the door to Asterea's room opened and bits of light entered. Seraphina offered him a soft smile as she walked towards the bed and put her hand to her daughters forehead checking for a fever. She breathed a sigh of relief realizing her daughter was not suffering at the moment. Sera pulled a chair up next to Renley and to his suprise she reached over and wrapped one of her hands around his. He looked up at her questioningly. "I spoke to my mother finally" Sera started. "It seems that five vampires have been decimated. The first attack was Anthony De'Windsor right around the same time Asterea had her first attack. My mother seems to believe that Asterea is feeling their death because she is connected to the people as their queen." "Then if that is the case, why isnt it affecting me? I am their king!" Renley questioned. "You are their king by mateship, Asterea is their queen by blood" Sera spoke softly. "So because she is bound to the kingdom by blood, she will suffer like it is her own death everytime one of them die?" He got angry. Renley balled his fist up rage taking over as he clenched them to his side. He wanted to kill whoever was doing this, NO... He would kill whoever was doing this. They had only been king and queen for a month maybe a little less and they hadnt even gotten the time to enjoy it. "Is there anything we can do to stop her from feeling the effects?" "We can keep her sedated over night and hopefully there will be no more deaths. If there are no more then we let her wake up. Her wolf is doing her best to take the pain from her as she wouldnt be able to handle the full effect." "What do you mean" Renley asked looking at his future mother in law. "I mean if it wasnt for her wolf, it might have killed her" Sera whispered. Fear gripped his entire body. Renley couldnt lose her already. They hadnt had enough time together yet. They were supposed to have eternity to love each other and yet here she was facing death. There had to be a cure or a way to stop this. Renley didnt care about being king. Maybe if they gave up their position as king and queen she wouldnt feel it anymore. Deep down he knew Asterea would never do that. He had to figure out what was causing this, and how to stop it.
