Asterea stirred in her sleep as the first light of dawn crept through the curtains of her room. A soft knock at the door brought her fully awake, and she sat up, blinking the sleep from her eyes. The door opened, and her mother, Artemea, stepped in with a gentle smile on her face.
"Good morning, my precious one," Artemea said softly, crossing the room to sit on the edge of Asterea's bed. She reached out and brushed a strand of hair from her daughter's forehead. "Today is the day. We leave for the vampire kingdom."
Asterea's heart sank at the reminder. She had been dreading this day for weeks. "I know, Mother. But... I don't know if I can give up my future mate and take a husband. I want to ask for more time."
Artemea's eyes softened with understanding. "Asterea, you don't need to stress over it. Your grandparents will understand. You just need to talk to them about your feelings. They love you and want what's best for you."
Asterea sighed, feeling a bit more at ease but still unsure. "What if they don't agree? What if they think I'm being selfish?"
Artemea chuckled softly. "Oh, Asterea, the Vampire Kingdom is vast. Who knows? You may find your mate there. And besides, your grandparents have always been reasonable. They know how important this decision is for you."
Asterea managed a small smile, feeling a glimmer of hope. "Thank you, Mother. I just needed to hear that."
"Of course, my love," Artemea said, giving her daughter a reassuring hug. "Now, let's get you ready. I see you've already packed your suitcases. And what a beautiful dress you've chosen for tonight's ball. You're going to look stunning."
Asterea glanced at the elegant dress hanging on the closet door. It was black with intricate red embroidery that shimmered in the light. "It was a gift from Grandfather and Grandmother," she said with a smile. "I hope it will look beautiful on me."
"I'm positive it will," Artemea replied, her eyes twinkling. "You always loved spending your summers in the Vampire Kingdom. Do you remember the time we got lost in the royal gardens and discovered that hidden maze?"
Asterea laughed, the memory bringing warmth to her heart. "How could I forget? We spent hours trying to find our way out, only to discover a beautiful, hidden fountain at the center."
"Yes, you did," Artemea said, her voice filled with pride. "You've always had a knack for finding beauty in unexpected places. It's one of the many things that make you special."
Asterea's expression softened. "I love finding them."
Artemea placed a gentle hand on her daughter's cheek. "You are so special, Asterea. I always knew you were destined for greatness. It was always going to be you who would become the queen of the vampires."
Asterea's eyes widened in surprise. "You really think so?"
"I know so," Artemea said with conviction. "And remember, you'll be coming home for a couple of days for your brother Atlas' wedding and Alpha and Luna ceremony. You'll have a chance to see everyone and recharge."
Asterea felt a wave of relief. "I'm glad. I was worried I wouldn't see everyone for a long time."
"Don't worry, my love," Artemea reassured her. "We'll be together soon enough. Now, let's have breakfast with the family, and then we'll pack one last time to make sure you have everything."
As they made their way down to the pack house dining room, the smell of freshly baked bread and sizzling bacon filled the air. The dining room was a scene of warm, familial chaos, with the omegas bustling around to prepare the buffet-style breakfast. Asterea's father, Ronan, was seated at the head of the table, overseeing the morning's preparations.
"Morning, Asterea!" her brother Atlas called out with a grin. "Ready for the big day?"
"Almost," she replied, ruffling his hair affectionately. "Just need to get through breakfast first."
As they gathered around the table, the conversation flowed easily, filled with laughter and love. Asterea couldn't help but feel grateful for the support of her family. They had always been her rock, and she knew she could face whatever challenges lay ahead with them by her side.
After breakfast, Asterea went back to her room to double-check her packing. She carefully folded and refolded her clothes, making sure everything was in order. Just as she was zipping up her suitcase, there was another knock at the door.
This time, it was her sister Lyrea, accompanied by her mate, Gabe, who was the Alpha of a neighboring pack. "Hey, Asterea," Lyrea greeted her with a warm hug. "We just wanted to see you off and give you our support."
Asterea's heart swelled with gratitude. "Thank you, Lyrea. It means so much to have you here."
Gabe stepped forward and gave her a reassuring smile. "You're not alone in this, Asterea. We're all here for you, no matter what."
Asterea nodded, feeling a renewed sense of determination. "Thank you, both of you. I think I'm ready now."
Artemea appeared in the doorway, her eyes sparkling with pride. "It's time, my love. Let's open the portal and begin this new chapter of your journey."
Asterea took a deep breath, her hand tightening around the handle of her suitcase. "I'm ready," she said with conviction. "Let's go."
With a flick of her wrist, Artemea's magic surged through the air, creating a shimmering portal in the middle of the room. She was so in sync with her magic that the portal opened effortlessly, without the slightest struggle. Asterea marveled at her mother's skill, feeling a sense of awe and admiration.
Asterea hugged each member of her family, savoring the warmth and love in their embraces. Then, she took her mother's hand, and together, they walked through the portal.
As they emerged on the other side, they were met by Asterea's grandparents, the king and queen of the Vampire Kingdom. The royal couple rushed over, their faces alight with joy and excitement.
"Welcome, welcome!" her grandfather exclaimed, wrapping Asterea in a bear hug. "We're so thrilled to have you here."
Her grandmother beamed, pulling Asterea into a tight embrace. "Have you tried on the dress, dear? It looks even more beautiful in person."
Asterea smiled, feeling a sense of belonging and love. "I have, Grandmother. It's perfect. Thank you so much."
The queen's eyes sparkled with delight. "We're so excited for the ball tonight. It's going to be a wonderful celebration."
As they continued to talk, Asterea felt nervousness and uncertainty begin to melt away.
"Grandmother, I wondered if you could spare me a moment alone," Asterea asked, working up her courage.
Her grandfather looked at her quizzically, but before he could say anything, her mother got the hint. "Daddy, how about you walked me to my room. There are a few things I would like to discuss with you before tonight's coronation ball.
"Very well, my darling daughter," he smiled down at her.
They walked off down the hall talking about all the latest gossip, heading forArtemea's room. Asterea straightened her back and held her head high as she wrapped her arm through her grandmother's, and they made their way through the vampire court. Queen Lilith waved politely and said hello to the passerbyers as they walked. "What is it you wish to talk about my dear grand daughter?" She finally asked her. Asterea turned her head to meet her grandmother's gaze. She couldn't put it off any longer as the coronation was tonight. "Grandmother, I want you to know that me being crowned the queen is something i take seriously. While I know I'm not one hundred percent vampire, my vampire side is the most dormant. Atlas and Lyrea both look so much like our father, and they are the epitome of a wolf, but even my wolf has vampire fangs. We both acknowledge that unlike the twins, I carry most of the vampire traits. We are ok with giving up our home to move here, to take over the kingdom. Jupiter, however, she isn't ok with giving up on our fated mate." She bit down on her bottom lip, scraping at it with her teeth nervously. Asterea's grandmother squeezed her hand lightly and softly smiled at her. "Darling, the vampire kingdom is accepting of you because of who you are despite the fact your father is a wolf. Ever since your mother's marriage to him, we have had a peaceful relationship with the wolves. I know that you're equally a part of both worlds, but I do not know if the kingdom would accept your mate if he was a wolf." her grandmother sighed. "I know that if anyone can keep the alliance with the wolves and vampires, it will be you. You were chosen to be queen for a reason. It wasn't because your sister was already mated off to another Alpha or even because you're their youngest child. It's because we all knew the day you were born that it would be you the vampires would follow. My beautiful girl, you fit the role to perfection. You look the part. While you are half a wolf, you look one hundred percent vampire. While I can give you time to see if you find your mate, if he is a wolf and he agrees to turn, the vampires still may not accept him."
Jupiter was growling in her concious, letting her know she did not care. If the kingdom didn't like it, they could find themselves a new queen. Tears threatened to spill from Asterea's eyes because she knew that it was not that simple. She knew that if her mate didn't look or smell like a vampire, her people may never accept. him, and if they didn't, she would have to reject her fated and choose someone else. She believed in love, so she knew it was possible she could marry and fall in love with her chosen mate, but it would never be the same.
"Asterea, I love you, and because of that, I will always be honest with you. I don't want to force you into a marriage. I will not say it's not important for you to find your king soon, though. A queen is at her strongest when she is tied to her king. Asterea, you come from a powerful line of vampires who are able to control blood magic. I don't believe I would need to explain to you how powerful your mother is, and that's with a wolf mate. If she had chosen a vampire mate and taken her rightful place as the queen, she would be much more powerful. I do understand why she decided against it. Im just trying to paint the bigger picture here. If time is what you need, then I do understand, but I want you to make me a promise."
Asterea met her grandmother's gaze as she nodded her head, letting her know she was listening. "I want you to promise me that you'll try to get to know people here. I want you to make friends and allies. Maybe you can even choose your ladies in waiting and your personal staff like your assistant, queen's maid and butler. I'd also like you to at least get to know the young dukes. While some of them may only want to pledge their house allegiance to you, there are a few who do wish to get to know you with the intent to propose marriage."
"I agree to that. I think it would be best for me to get to know the future head of each house since each of them has a roll to play in our kingdom. As far as my ladies-in-waiting, do we have any candidates?" Asterea asked.
"I can definitely give you a list of candidates, young women who were born for this role even. Some of my ladies in waiting have daughters that would be more than happy to take a place beside you. Anyhow, let's get you to your room. The make-up artist and hair dresser will be here in a few hours. Maybe you should rest till then, you look a little pale," the queen spoke to her softly as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind Asterea ear. "You're going to be amazing tonight. You're a natural like your mother... Like myself." With that, she turned and walked away from Asterea back towards the ball room.
