A Queen &Her King

2000 Words
Asterea found herself alone in the kitchen with Duke Renley, the silence amplifying the frantic energy that pulsed within her. Jupiter was a whirlwind of possessiveness in her mind, a chaotic storm of emotions threatening to overwhelm her. She was trying to calm the wolf, who was desperate to take control, to claim her mate, to cement the bond. “Jupiter, please,” Asterea thought, struggling to maintain her composure. “Just… just give me a moment. I need to think.” “Think? There’s nothing to think about! He’s ours! Ours, Asterea!” Jupiter’s voice was a snarl in her mind, a stark contrast to the elegant facade Asterea was trying to maintain. “He’s a vampire, who cares? He’s our mate! Don’t you dare reject him!” Asterea was trying to balance the primal pull of the bond with the rational part of her mind. She had no intention of rejecting Renley, but she couldn’t simply surrender to the connection without a second thought. Renley, his gaze intense, finally seemed to notice her inner turmoil. “Asterea? Are you alright?” he asked, his voice laced with genuine concern. She took a deep breath, trying to ground herself. “Yes, I’m fine,” she said, her voice a little shaky. “My wolf is just… a little overly excited.” “A little? I’m ready to leap down his throat and claim him right here!” Jupiter interjected, her voice dripping with sarcasm. Renley brushed a loose curl from Asterea’s face, his touch gentle. “What are you thinking?” he asked softly. She sighed heavily. “It’s… it’s hard to think at all. The bond is so… overwhelming.” She met his gaze, her grey eyes searching his. “I don’t know you, Renley. I don’t know if you’re a good person, if you’re a horrible person. I don’t want to just… jump into your arms, or your bed, and regret it later.” She looked away, a vulnerable honesty in her voice. “I’ve been waiting my entire life to have a love as pure as my parents’. Honestly, I never even thought it would happen.” He raised an eyebrow, a flicker of surprise in his expression. “Why would you think that?” “Because,” she admitted, “I never even considered having a vampire mate. I grew up seeing wolves bond with wolves, and… well, it’s not common for different species to bond. The only cross-species bond I’ve ever seen was between my parents, and maybe one other between a wolf in my pack and a witch from a coven in the town nearby.” She saw a brief flash of hurt in his eyes when she said she never considered being mated to a vampire. He quickly masked it, but it was there. “Is it a problem for you, being mated to a vampire?” he asked, his voice carefully neutral. “No, of course not,” she said quickly. “It’s just… I never thought of it that way.” He scrunched up his face, trying to hide a look of disdain. “Why would you ever reject your destined mate?” She looked at him, shocked. “It's not like that... it's complicated,” she said, her voice firm. He pulled her close, his arms wrapped around her, as she breathed in his scent of ocean and cedarwood, feeling his hand rubbing soothing circles on her back. “I was raised knowing that after my seventeenth birthday, I would be crowned queen of the Vampire Kingdom, and I was expected to reject my mate and take a high-born husband from the vampire kingdom.” She looked up at him. “Although now that shouldn’t be a problem, because you’re not a wolf. My grandparents were always concerned that I would have a wolf mate, and the kingdom wouldn’t accept him, even if I did turn him.” He was silent for a moment, then looked down at her. “Are you planning to reject me?” She looked at him, shocked. “Absolutely not,” she said. He pulled her close to him, and she breathed in his scent as he rubbed circles on her back, trying to calm her down. She looked up at him. “I would like to get to know you,” she said softly. “I want to take things a bit slower. I don’t want to rush things and have us both regret it later.” He growled at the mention of possible regret. “There will never be any regret,” he said, his eyes burning with a fierce intensity. She saw the determination in his eyes, and they turned black. “I am willing to take things slowly for you,” he said, his voice low and possessive, “but there will never be any regret. You are my mate, Asterea. Understand that YOU. ARE. MINE," he punctuated each word possessively. "My blood sings for yours, as yours does for mine.” He stepped closer. “I’m trying to control my beast side, which craves to taste your blood and claim you as mine. If you need time to get to know me and reign in your emotions, I can do my best to give you that. But we will have to announce that you have found your destined mate, because I will not be able to control my beast or my anger if another male who is interested in courting you tries to even touch you in the slightest.” She nodded, understanding. “I understand,” she said. “Because Jupiter doesn’t wish for any other men to touch me either.” “Damn right! I’ll bite their fingers off!” Jupiter added with a snarky tone. Asterea giggled, the sound light and airy. His eyes darkened again. “Your laughter does something to me,” he said, his voice husky. “Something I can’t explain.” Their eyes locked, and he asked, his voice hesitant for the first time, “May I kiss you?” She nodded, biting her bottom lip. He groaned inwardly, cupping her cheek with his hand as he bent down to kiss her. But at that moment, Queen Lilith swept into the kitchen. “Asterea, my dear, it’s time for the coronation. The kingdom awaits their new queen.” Asterea smiled softly at Renley, then moved her hand to lock her fingers with his as they walked to exit the kitchen. She turned to her grandmother. “Before the coronation, can we announce to the kingdom that I've found my destined mate? And we can tell them who it is, as he will need to be crowned as their new king.” Renley came to a stop, halting Asterea and Queen Lilith in their steps. They turned to him, concern etched on their faces. “Everything alright?” Lilith asked. Renley turned to Asterea. “Are you sure you want to do that? I thought you wanted to take things slowly.” Asterea nodded. “Of course, that’s what I want. And despite that, we will be going slow with our physical relationship. You will still be my husband and crowned king. I am being crowned now, we might as well go ahead and be crowned together.” Renley nodded in understanding as Asterea wrapped her arm around his and allowed him to lead her back to the throne alongside her grandmother. Queen Lilith stepped forward, her regal presence commanding the attention of the entire ballroom. A hush fell over the crowd as she began to speak, her voice resonating with power and authority. “My esteemed guests, tonight we celebrate a momentous occasion in the history of our kingdom. We celebrate the continuation of our royal lineage, the strength of our blood, and the dawn of a new era.” She paused, her gaze sweeping over the assembled nobles. “For generations, our kingdom has thrived under the wise rule of our queens. But tonight, we witness a new chapter unfold. My daughter, Artemea, has chosen to fulfill her duties as Luna of the Falling Moon Pack, a choice we respect and honor. Therefore, her daughter, my granddaughter, Asterea, will ascend to the throne, taking her rightful place as our queen.” A wave of applause rippled through the ballroom, a testament to the respect and anticipation surrounding Asterea’s coronation. Lilith raised a hand, silencing the crowd once more. “However,” she continued, her voice laced with a hint of triumph, “tonight, we will not only crown our queen, but also her king.” She gestured towards Asterea and Renley, who stepped forward, their hands intertwined. “Asterea has found her destined mate, Duke Renley De’Varys, and they will rule together, ensuring the strength and prosperity of our kingdom.” Another round of applause echoed through the hall, this time laced with whispers of surprise and excitement. Lilith beckoned Asterea and Renley to join her and King Ivar at a small table that had been placed before the thrones. Upon the table lay two intricately crafted silver daggers. “Asterea,” Lilith began, her voice solemn, “as you ascend to the throne, you must swear an oath to uphold the laws of our kingdom, to protect your people, and to rule with wisdom and compassion.” She recited the oath, her words echoing through the silent ballroom. Asterea repeated the oath, her voice strong and clear. Lilith then took one of the daggers and made a small, precise cut on her palm, offering the dagger to Asterea. Asterea mirrored her grandmother’s action, then pressed their palms together, mingling their blood. Instantly, a surge of power coursed through Asterea, a wave of energy that left her breathless. She heard the voices of her people in her mind, a symphony of thoughts and emotions. She could feel their presence, their hopes and fears, their loyalty and devotion. She felt the ancient blood magic, the legacy of generations of queens, flowing through her veins. She was their leader, their protector, their queen. Next, it was Renley’s turn. King Ivar stepped forward, holding the second dagger. “Renley De’Varys,” he began, his voice booming through the hall, “do you swear to uphold the laws of our kingdom, to protect your queen, and to rule beside her with strength and honor?” Renley repeated the oath, his voice unwavering. Ivar then made a cut on his palm and offered the dagger to Renley, who followed suit. As their blood mingled, a similar surge of power flowed into Renley, the ancient magic of the kingdom now his to command. He was now their king. Lilith and Ivar each removed their crowns, laying them gently on the table. Two butlers, moving with silent grace, approached, each carrying a covered pillow. Ivar gestured towards Renley. "King Renley De'Varys," he announced, his voice filled with pride, "I present to you, the crown of the Vampire Kingdom." The butlers lifted the covers, revealing a crown of exquisite craftsmanship. It was a masterpiece of silver, intricately woven with rubies and black diamonds, the house colors of the royal family. The crown fit perfectly on Renley's head, the gems sparkling under the soft light of the chandeliers. Lilith turned to Asterea. "And now, my beautiful granddaughter," she said, her voice filled with love and pride, "Queen Asterea." The butlers revealed the second crown, a masterpiece of feminine elegance. It was a delicate silver circlet, adorned with shimmering rubies and black diamonds, mirroring the design of Renley's crown. As Lilith placed the crown upon Asterea's head, a wave of power washed over her, solidifying her position as the new queen. The crowd erupted in cheers, the sound filling the ballroom with a joyous cacophony. Asterea and Renley stood side-by-side, their crowns gleaming under the soft light, their hands clasped together, a symbol of their newfound power and their eternal bond.
