The campus was unusually quiet that evening. Most students had gone home, leaving the autumn breeze to swirl leaves across the empty walkways. Zara lingered near the faculty building, gathering her notes after an afternoon lecture. “Leaving so soon?” Liam’s voice came from behind her. She turned to see him leaning casually against the wall, a coffee cup in hand. “I just… wanted to finish grading before tomorrow,” she replied, trying to keep her tone neutral. He smiled, eyes warm. “I could join you. Or at least keep you company.” Zara hesitated, but something in his presence made her say yes. Together, they walked slowly toward the staff lounge, sipping their coffees. For a while, neither spoke, content in the quiet. Then Liam said softly, “I like these quiet moments. When they reached the lounge, Liam hesitated. “Maybe… we could do this again? Just a walk and coffee, no work, no students?” Zara’s pulse quickened. “I’d like that.” And as he walked away, she realized that the carefully constructed walls she’d built around her heart were starting to crumble. Slowly. But undeniably.
