Chapter 5: Confessions in the Library

293 Words
Zara was alone in the university library, buried in her notes, when she heard the familiar soft footsteps approaching. “Studying late again?” Liam asked, leaning casually against the doorway, his eyes twinkling in amusement. “Trying to,” she said, smiling faintly. “But it feels like the books are winning tonight.” He moved closer, lowering his voice. “Maybe I can help. Sometimes talking it out works better than reading endless pages.” She glanced at him, a spark of mischief in her eyes. “Are you offering to tutor me?” “Depends,” he said, sliding a chair beside her. “Do you think I can handle your stubbornness?” Zara laughed softly, her walls crumbling just a little more. “Maybe you can. But you’d better try.” For the next hour, they discussed literature, debated ideas, and shared small jokes. But somewhere between the pages and whispered commentary, Zara noticed the vulnerability in Liam’s eyes—a hint of something he didn’t show to anyone else. “Why do you always seem so… composed?” she asked quietly. He hesitated, then sighed. “I’ve made mistakes. Been hurt. I guess I’ve learned to hide behind a confident front. But… not everything stays hidden.” Her heart skipped. She wanted to ask more, to hear every secret, but instead, she simply nodded. When the library lights dimmed, Liam packed his notes slowly. “I’m glad we did this,” he said, voice softer than usual. “Me too,” Zara admitted, and for the first time, she felt that maybe this connection could be more than fleeting glances and polite smiles. As he left, she whispered to herself, “I’m scared… but I want this.”
