“My apologies,” a tall, wiry man swept into Jassie’s room, and she blinked, trying to adjust to the sudden flood of light into the room. “Oh dear,” he made a sound tsking sound with his tongue. “Such a terrible room to keep you in. I promise, when we are married, only the best.”
Jassie heard his words just as she felt his touch on her shoulder and recoiled in disgust. “It’s me, David,” he said as if she mistook him for someone else. “I’ve come to get you out if you’re ready.”
He and her father had a way of speaking to her as if she was here by choice. David was behaving as if he was picking her up for a date. She wanted to claw his face, but she wrapped her arms around her stomach that was beginning to feel tense. “I’m perfectly fine here,” she lied.
