Chapter 21: Who Are You Fighting?

1969 Words
*Jaxon’s POV* “How can you drop something like this on me so suddenly Jaxon?” I could hear the frustration and concern in her voice as she asked. Our connection also allowed me to feel the worry within her. She abruptly stood up from the table and stood at the rail of the balcony. I got up from my seat and stood beside her. We stood there silently for a moment just looking out to the forest. I was trying to find the right words to say so she wouldn’t get upset any further. The last thing I needed was to leave her with ill feelings towards me, that would just undo all the progress I had made with her. “Piper, I’m sorry.” I finally apologized for making her feel like I was dropping a bomb on her. “It kind of just came up today. We got word about it while I was going over some things with Nikko. We have to leave tonight so we can have the advantage.” “How long will you be gone?” I could tell she was upset but she was attempting to hide it. “Should only be for a couple days.” I answered honestly. “We have to travel there and back. Then who knows how long this fight could go on for.” Her eyes remained fixed onto the forest. “Who are you fighting?” “I don’t think I should tell you right now.” The trust between us had begun to grow along with our bond. However we were still at this strange stage in our relationship where I still didn’t know where she stood with Matteo and Moon Stone. I didn’t need to find out the hard way he was still mind linking with her by her tipping him off about the attack we had planned. “Jaxon.” She turned and gave me a disapproving look. “I need some honesty here. You can’t just tell me you’re leaving and then keep me in the dark!” “It’s for your own good.” I defended my actions. “For my own good?” I could feel she was beginning to get angry with me. “Jaxon I thought we had come farther in our bond, if you want me to stay then I need to know! Is it Moon Stone?” “No, Silver Moon.” The words left my mouth faster than I could think. I didn’t mean for it to come out but it did. Her face grew serious as her blue eyes looked into my hazel orbs intensely. “What do they have to do with anything?” “I’ve said too much already.” I spoke in a lower tone. “What do they have to do with this?” She asked once more, this time the anger she had inside came through to her voice. “If I tell you, I need you to promise me you won’t mind link with that scum and blow this whole thing up.” If she wanted the truth then fine, she could have it. But I needed to have her word that she wouldn’t ruin this and put my pack in danger. “So this deals with Matteo then?” She knew instantly who I had referred to, of course it’s not exactly like I had hidden it. “I’m not saying anything until you swear this conversation will not make it back to him.” I was stern with my tone to make sure she knew I meant business on this. “I promise.” She agreed. I let out a sigh of defeat. In the end this would prove how much I could trust her. In the few weeks she has been here though I could tell that Piper took a promise she made seriously. If for whatever reason this didn’t work out though, she would have to be dealt with accordingly. “Moon Stone can’t fight me because of the exchange we made, their lives for you.” I began to explain. “So they got Silver Moon involved.” She thought for a moment. “So this is about me then. Are you sure? Alpha Alec doesn’t seem like the type to get in on such a matter. Especially since it has nothing to do with his pack.” “You would think but he’s more worried about his relationship with Alpha Bradley.” I responded. “Silver Moon is the one who gave us the warning about a week ago. One of their members stayed behind to warn us of the fight. However we’ve gotten word that they decided to put their plan into action earlier by a few days. That’s why I have to leave tonight.” “Let me go with you.” I could see on her face she only wanted to help. “I’ve met Alpha Alec a few times. I can go with and explain everything to him, including what Moon Stone has been doing.” “Piper, he’s more than aware of what Moon Stone has done.” This went deeper than just one pack. “That’s why they’re the closest ally that Moon Stone has. Silver Moon has used the same tactics to get some of their strongest wolves. Alpha Alec won’t care what you have to say, he’s only going to care about fulfilling his deal with Alpha Bradley.” She seemed to be in thought for a moment. It was clear she was trying to look for a way to help the situation. She seemed to be interested in problem solving and she wasn’t afraid at the thought of going into a fight. She was a leader after all, it’s what she had been trained to do. Reasons like this is why she would be a fantastic luna to my pack. “Are you sure I can’t come?” She finally asked. “I’m sure there’s some way I can help on this.” “No.” I was firm with my answer. There was no way I was going to have her tag along for this one. “You play way too big of a role in this. It’s not safe and it’s better for you if you just stay here. Nadine can keep you company while I’m away.” I could feel a hint of her sadness at the thought of being away from me. I could feel it myself. This bond was only getting stronger and stronger. This is what I wanted but man did it suck right now. She wasn’t marked by me either so I would be too far away for us to mind link. “What if something happens to you?” She asked as worry filled her beautiful blue eyes. “What happens then?” I wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her closer to me. “Nothing will happen to me Piper.” “How can you be so sure?” She questioned further. A confident smirk crossed my lips. “Because the original Dark Moon alpha was the strongest alpha around and I managed to beat him.” “Alpha Alec is pretty strong too though.” The look of worry remained on her face. “He is.” I agreed as she wasn’t wrong. “But I can take him. My pack is strong. I just need you to be here waiting for me when I get back. I’ll need you to help me relieve some tension.” She seemed to begin to relax as she nodded in response. “I can do that.” I used my free hand to caress her cheek and brought my lips down to hers. I felt the excitement and passion from us both as our lips moved in sync with each other. She parted her lips and allowed my tongue inside. I used the arm around her waist to attempt to pull her even closer. I still felt that wasn’t close enough though. She let out a small satisfied moan out into my mouth. I could feel the desire building between us the longer this kiss lasted. If I had more time I would have ripped her clothes off and taken her on the table. Unfortunately that part would have to wait. There was a knock on the door that caused us to pull away from each other. “Damn it.” I mumbled under my breath. “You better get that.” I could hear the disappointment in her voice. She didn’t have to say it but I could tell she had wanted more from that moment as well. I let out an irritated sigh as I walked into the room and opened the door. “I asked for one on one time with my mate. What the f**k is it?” I let my irritation be known. “Jaxon.” Piper spoke in a warning tone as she approached us and stood by my side. She took my hand in hers. “Calm down.” I nodded as I felt my irritation and anger dissipate with her touch. I looked back to Nikko and spoke with a much calmer tone. “What is it?” “It’s ten minutes to eight. We have to get going.” Nikko answered. “The pack has been briefed on what they need to know and everyone has finished their meals.” “Okay.” I didn’t realize how much time had passed. When I was with Piper I honestly didn’t bother to look at the clock. “I’ll be down in a moment.” “Okay.” Nikko nodded and turned around to go meet with the rest down stairs. I shut the door and turned my attention to Piper. “That’s my cue to go. You’ll come see me off won’t you?” “Of course.” She forced a small smile but I could tell she was a mix of feelings. She was worried, maybe even a little scared but she wouldn’t admit it. No matter what it seemed she put on a brave face. I continued holding her hand as we left the room and headed down the stairs. The halls were mainly empty as we headed for the front doors of the pack house. Most of the others were already outside to see off their loved ones. This was the first time I had someone myself to see me off. We walked outside and I stood on the steps looking at everyone hugging the ones that would be leaving. I cleared my throat to get their attention. I waited patiently for them to quiet down and for their eyes to be on me. After a couple minutes I finally had all of their attention. “This is just like any other fight.” I spoke loudly so they could all hear me. “I promise I will make sure all of your loved ones return home. Just as I have many times before. We have to get going now, but we’ll be back soon.” I finished addressing the pack and gave Piper another kiss. This one wasn’t as intense as I needed to get out of here and I couldn’t get distracted. Once we had pulled away from each other she watched me from behind as I descended the steps to leave with my pack. “You better come back in one piece.” Her voice came over our mind link connection. I glanced back at her once more as we began to leave. The only reason I had to come back before was to lead the pack. Now I have her ”I will.” I had to.
