Chapter 20: Quite A Day

1700 Words
*Piper’s POV* Nadine was more than happy to help take on the task of finding out more information on my eyes. She mentioned she had only read it once so it was going to take her some time to pinpoint the book as she reads a lot. That was fine with me. I wasn’t exactly in a rush to get back to Moon Stone anymore. I didn’t even know what was going on with them. I had kept Matteo blocked out so he couldn’t mind link with me. I had a number of things I needed to figure out before I decided to talk with him again. But again, after finding out all the information I had I was in no hurry. “Dee, what is it you do for the pack?” I asked. It seemed everyone had their own little jobs. She seemed very knowledgeable so I would expect her to be like a teacher or something. Maybe even the keeper of the library with all the information she had on books. Clearly her intelligence served some purpose here. “I don’t know if he would want me to tell you, but screw it.” The he she was referring to was Jaxon. “I know how to hack into computers so part of it is checking in on other packs when deemed necessary. I also happen to get Jaxon the information he requests on the same day he asks for it.” “So are you the one who gave him the documents on where I came from?” I questioned further. “Yeah.” Her tone was lower as she answered. “Sorry you’ve had to find out so many negative things like that. It can’t be easy.” “It definitely has caused some confusion. That’s for sure.” I confessed. “Well, if you ever need to talk to someone who’s not Jaxon you can always come to me.” She gave me a reassuring smile. “I just can’t promise you’ll like what I have to say. I’m not exactly known to sugar coat anything.” I let out a low chuckle. “Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind.” I really enjoyed spending the day with Nadine. She knew how to keep a conversation going and there had yet to be a dull moment. I felt like we were becoming friends fairly quickly. To be honest, it was hard to remember what it was like to have any friends. The last friend I had turned out to be mated to a member of Silver Moon. She left with him last year and I hadn’t seen or heard from her since. That was right before Matteo and I had gotten together. I had felt lonely and thought he was there for me to be kind, now I knew there was more to his reasoning. “Are you still out with Nadine?” Jaxon’s voice entered my mind. “You missed lunch and I’m beginning to worry.” “Yes, I’m still out with Dee. I’m fine. I’ve just been enjoying my time.” I responded. Dee stopped as she noticed I was clearly in a conversation. She waited patiently for an opening to ask what it was about. “Okay. The pack will be meeting for dinner in about an hour. Be back by then.” He ordered in a gentle tone before closing the link between us. “Jaxon?” Dee guessed. “Yeah.” I nodded. “What did he want?” She asked. “If you don’t mind me asking. I just assume it’s something about our time together.” “He just wanted to check in and make sure I was still with you.” I answered. She pursed her lips together. “You should’ve told him I let you escape. That would’ve been pretty fun.” “I see. You wake up and like to choose violence then?” I raised a brow. “Only when it comes to Jaxon and Nikko.” An amused grin spread over her lips. “They can be quite fun to mess with.” “How so?” I asked curiously. “Well, there was one time I was supposed to go out with another pack member, they scared him away. Which, you know realizing now was probably a good thing, but at the time I was upset about it. So I got some of the powdered drink mix and put it in the shower head at the house. Jaxon stayed over and let’s just say he and Nikko were purple for a few days.” She let out a chuckle. My eyes went wide at her confession. “I bet that was interesting for any meeting he had.” She let out a bust of laughter. “Oh it was hilarious, because the pack members had to force themselves to take them seriously while they looked ridiculous.” “How long ago was this?” I asked. “See. Jaxon became the alpha about four years ago.” She thought back as we walked towards the pack house. “It was three years ago, I was seventeen at the time and I thought I knew everything. Turns out though they were right to not let me go out with the guy, he was sleeping his way through the females my age at the time.” “So you’re twenty now?” From the sounds of it we were pretty close in age. I was just a little older. “Yes.” She nodded. “Have you found your mate?” I was just making conversation and I was a little curious if I’m being honest. “Not yet. But it’s only been three months. It would seem that whoever he is, he's not part of Dark Moon. I’m sure I’ll find my mate eventually though.” She smiled as she seemed hopeful. We continued walking towards the front of the pack house. Nikko and Jaxon were standing outside waiting for our return. “Well, well, well, there you are little sister.” Nikko greeted Nadine. She rolled her eyes. “Here I am, in the flesh. And I managed to bring our luna back in one piece.” “It seems like you two had quite the day?” Jaxon raised a brow as he looked between Nadine and I. “Oh absolutely. She only tried to run away once.” Dee joked. Jaxon was clearly not amused as his serious face looked me over. “Is that so?” “Of course not.” Dee answered before I could. “I’m only joking, lighten up Alpha Jaxon. I was just showing her around our little village here.” I looked around at the buildings. “Little village? I would hardly call it that. It’s like ten times the size of the Moon Stone’s village.” Jaxon turned to Nikko. “You two go on without us. I think tonight I want to have a one on one meal with Piper.” Nikko nodded. “Of course. Come on Dee.” Nadine turned to me. “It was fun hanging out with you. We’ll definitely be doing this again.” “For sure.” I smiled. Jaxon watched as they entered inside of the pack house. He then turned his attention towards me. I could tell there was something off. He had seemed so relaxed this morning but his mood was completely different. Something had to have happened while I had been away with Nadine. “What’s wrong?” I asked in a concerned tone. “We’ll discuss it after dinner. Okay?” He responded. “For right now I just need you.” “Okay.” I nodded. He held out his hand and I gave him mine. I noticed he seemed to relax a little bit but not all the way. Whatever had him on edge had to be something big. The only other time he seemed to have this demeanor was when the pack had gotten a warning just outside the perimeter. He led the way into the pack house and up the stairs. Instead of going to the room we went up further. He opened the door that revealed a small table with two chairs on a balcony. He led the way and pulled out one of the chairs for me to take a seat. He then sat across from me. “I hope you don’t mind. After the last few days I figured we could use some time alone.” He spoke before taking a sip of water. It was true, things had gotten busier since I was coming out and around the pack a little more. We were now attending meal times together. Jaxon also showed me around his office and the pack house. When there was something big he had to deal with I was either in the bedroom or exploring the house a little more. “I don’t mind at all.” I gave him a small smile. I actually missed having a little one on one time with my mate. An omega brought out our food for us. Tonight was some chicken with rice and vegetables for the side. As always the food was delicious. Catherine who worked in the kitchen had yet to make anything I didn’t like. Of course as a wolf though it helps that we aren’t exactly picky. We chatted back and forth as we ate. Once we had finished the omega returned to grab our emptied plates. I could feel Jaxon get serious all over again. I was about to find out exactly what was going on. “Piper.” He spoke my name before pausing. “I have to leave after dinner.” “What do you mean?” I asked. “The pack that decided to leave us the warning has decided to take it upon themselves to fight sooner than planned.” His hazel eyes looked into my blue orbs. “I have to leave after we finish.” I felt my heart drop down into my stomach. This was not what I expected.
