Chapter 19: Your Eyes

*Piper’s POV* I followed behind the girl Jaxon had sent me away with. She seemed like an interesting person. Especially with her dark blue hair. She also wore a black pair of jeans with holes in the legs and a black shirt to match. She had some dark eyeshadow and lipstick to go with her clothing. “So your name’s Nadine?” I asked to make conversation. “Yup.” She answered with a smile. “Just call me Dee though please.” “Why Dee?” I raised a brow out of curiosity. “Because, Nadine is my grandmother’s name. Makes me feel old to be honest.” She politely explained. “So I’d rather be called Dee.” I nodded. “Okay, Dee it is then.” She led the way down the hall of the pack house and outside. I looked around as she continued walking. We exited through the front entrance and I noticed all of the pack members going about their business. Some were talking to others and some were doing the duties they had been assigned by Jaxon. I followed Dee down the steps and caught up so we were side by side. “So you and Jaxon are mates?” She asked. “Apparently so.” I responded. I hoped she wasn’t going to be another jealous female that wanted Jaxon to herself. I figured now would be the time to find out. “Are you into him as well?” Dee stopped and had a look of disgust plastered on her face. “That’s gross. No, I am definitely not into Jaxon. He’s more like another annoying big brother to me.” I let out a low chuckle. “Jaxon annoying? I would’ve never guessed.” I joked with her. “You should see him and Nikko together.” She rolled her eyes. “They can be quite an irritating pair if you ask me. Come on.” She began walking again. “Have Nikko and Jaxon always been close?” I was curious to know more about this mate of mine. I could just ask him but I wanted an outside opinion on the matter. “No.” She turned down a path where there were homes for the pack members. “Nikko hated him for a while to be honest.” “Why’s that?” They seemed pretty close now and like they could truly trust each other. I would have never guessed Nikko and him had any bad feelings towards each other. Before she could respond a little girl came running up to us. She had long brown hair and eyes the color of copper. “Dee!” “Hey Becca.” Dee turned to glance at me. “Let me show you around first, then I’ll answer your questions more in depth, deal?” I nodded. “Deal.” She turned her attention back to the little girl. “Shouldn’t you be with the others at the school.” Dee spoke to the young girl. “I was on my way.” The girl answered before taking the backpack off of her shoulder. She unzipped it and pulled out a book. She then handed it over to Dee. “I finished this one though and wanted to give it back before I forgot it.” Dee gave her a pleased smile. “Did you like it?” “Yes!” Becca’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Do you have any others I can read?” “I’ll see what I got, if I find something I’ll bring it with me when we all meet for dinner.” Dee responded. “Okay?” “Okay.” Becca nodded. “Now get to school before you’re late.” Dee instructed. “You have important studies that I’m pretty sure you won’t want to miss!” Becca nodded. “Bye Dee!” She then turned around and headed in the direction of the schoolhouse for the pack. Dee turned her attention back to me. “Sorry about that. She wants to learn all the details about the werewolf side of people. I happen to be the pack nerd I guess so I’ve been helping her out.” “Pack nerd?” She definitely didn’t have the look of a bookworm. She seemed a little edgy for it, but I guess that’s why we don’t judge books by their covers. “Yeah.” She chuckled. “Let me show you around everything, since that was the order I was given anyway.” I followed Dee around the paths. While there were dirt paths that led to things, everything else was pretty modernized. The cottages the pack members stayed in weren’t big but they were pretty good sized. Dark Moon was like our pack, most members lived on their own and got together when needed. The only difference was everyone joined at meal time. I watched the pack members as we continued on our walk. I noticed some tending to gardens and others seemed like they were going to get ready to hunt down some meat. I watched as they interacted with each other in a friendly manner. I had noticed they all got along during meals but in a way seeing them out in their surroundings made it seem more real that this is who they all really were. The more time I spent observing them, the more it became clearer and clearer that they weren’t bad. Moon Stone had told us horror stories about how Dark Moon could barely trust each other. That they were always constantly fighting. That had turned out to be another lie as all I’ve seen is an extremely close community. Jaxon was clearly doing a good job here. We continued walking through the village for a few moments. Dee showed me where the school building was. She also showed me where the pack spent their time training, the building was about as massive as the pack house. There were even a few shops set up around just in case someone stumbled upon their territory it would just look like this little town. Once she had shown me everything Dee took a seat on a bench. She patted the spot beside her. “Now I can answer your questions.” I took the seat next to her. The time I had spent with her I was actually having fun. Dee was a little quirky but she was entertaining. She definitely liked keeping conversation and gave me some of the history she knew about certain spots in the village. “My father was the old alpha’s beta. When Jaxon came to join the pack our old alpha practically laughed in his face and turned him away.” She began to explain. “So that’s when Jaxon challenged him and they fought it out. Jaxon won and decided that since my father was the beta of the pack it was only right that his beta be Nikko.” “I see.” I made sure she had all my attention for this conversation. Hopefully Jaxon wouldn’t be upset with her for giving me this information. “Nikko was loyal to our alpha of course, so when Jaxon came along and took over he was not so welcoming to his new leader. They ended up fighting it out and Nikko got his ass handed to him.” She explained further. “Jaxon is strong, like really strong. But he did end up gaining Nikko’s respect along with everyone else’s after a while because they were nervous about him. If you ask me though I think Jaxon was sent to us on purpose.” “What do you mean?” Her last sentence only made me more curious. “The old alpha rejected his mate on purpose. He also never allowed a female in his bed.” Dee answered. “He was so hell bent on keeping his power he thought if he didn’t have a bloodline then it couldn’t be taken. Don’t get me wrong he was good at being a leader and I will forever be grateful for the things he did for us, but it was starting to get to his head and he was starting to make decisions that were risky to us. So I think the Moon Goddess sent Jaxon here because we needed a new leader, one that was going to make the right choices. Everyone else had mixed opinions.” “Mixed opinions like what?” I questioned further. “Some felt that we were doing just fine, that we didn’t need an outsider coming in. Other’s felt like the older alpha was just becoming power hungry. That he was more focused on being a tyrant and keeping his spot.” She responded. “So when Jaxon came in it was like a relief for them. It seems some of them have found it a relief that he finally found a mate too.” “What do you mean?” I clearly was being talked about by the others. “What have they said?” “They’ve said that the fact he’s so dedicated to you already shows he doesn’t mind having a bloodline carry on the alpha position. They were worried the power might go to his head. So some of them are happy that’s not the case.” Dee explained. “That’s some of them, what about the others?” I wanted to know the other thoughts the pack members had from someone who wasn’t trying to get me to stay with him. “Well there’s a few that don’t like you because you’re an outsider too, an outsider that came from the enemy pack.” She was honest here and that’s what I was looking for. “Some of them are scared of you, they know right away that you’re different.” “Different?” I was just a normal female. There was nothing special about me other than I didn’t mind being involved. “Trust me, there’s nothing special anyone should be scared of.” “You’re wrong.” Dee smiled. “You are special, I didn’t really notice until we were face to face and I could really see you.” “What do you mean?” I knew she looked at me weird but I didn’t think about why until now. “Your eyes Piper.” She answered. “Your blue eyes, how many other wolves have that?” I thought back, trying to remember if anyone else had the same color. My mind was turning up blanks though. “I guess I haven’t really met any others.” I confessed. “Exactly!” Dee smiled wider. “Hell even my grey eyes are more common than your’s and that says a lot. I remember reading about what blue eyes mean but that was years ago. I don’t really remember it much.” “Dee, do you think maybe you could track it down in one of your books?” I now wanted to know more about this topic. If there really was something special about me and my eyes maybe it would explain why Matteo had chosen me to be his mate.
