Chapter 35: A Missing Book

1846 Words
*Piper’s POV* I lunged at Dee as I threw a punch with my fist. She managed to dodge my attack. We circle each other for a moment. All eyes from everyone else are on us watching the demonstration the trainer had asked of us today. Dee attempted to give me a kick but before her food touched me I grabbed it and threw her to the ground. I could be going easier on her but what would the point in that be? We’re here to train for a reason. If I went easy on her then she wouldn’t be challenged to get any better than she already is. Dee quickly jumped back up before I had the opportunity to pounce on her. She gets back into her fighting stance and her grey eyes look into mine. It’s like she’s trying to study me. Like she’s trying to figure out what my next move is going to be. I caught her by surprise as it seemed like I was about to throw a punch with one fist. She fell for the distraction. She attempted to dodge my fake hit but I used my other fist to give her a blow to the stomach. She hunched over and I once again took her to the ground but this time I pounced on top of her to keep her from jumping back up. “Okay, that’s enough for you two.” Benjamin, the one I had taken on my first training session, speaks. I released  my hold on Dee and got up. I held out my hand so that I could help her up. She takes it and with one quick pull she’s standing beside me again. “You’re damn good.” She points her finger at me. “Therefore I’m pretty proud of how long I managed to stay off the ground this time.” I let out a chuckle and sling my arm around her shoulder. I proceeded to then lead the way over to some water. We’re both a little parched from that exercise and could use some hydration. “You did good.” I agree with her. “A couple days ago I could have you on your back in no time. I mean I still can but it is a little harder.” “What are you doing after this?” Dee asked before taking a drink from her water bottle. “I really don’t have much planned. If anything I’ll probably catch up with Jaxon on the details of what he’s done today.” I answered. “Are you not allowed to sit in on the meetings with him or something?” She raised a brow. “I’m allowed to if I want. I’ve chosen not to though.” I began to explain. “I’ve still got to gain all of the pack’s trust fully, some are still not exactly big fans of the fact I’ll be taking on the luna role.” “What does that have to do with you attending meetings?” I could see my explanation had only confused her a little more. “I want his meetings to go well, they won’t go well if anyone he’s meeting with is uncomfortable and feels like they have to watch what they say because they still view me as an enemy.” I responded. Dee scrunched up her nose. “Well f**k them, you’ve proven yourself enough that it shouldn’t matter how comfortable someone is.” “I know.” She’s absolutely right but I refuse to make people feel like they’re forced to just accept me. I want them to change their mind because their opinion of me changed. “This pack is lucky to have someone like you and the others need to see that.” She continued to come to my defense. “Thanks Dee.” I gave her a small smile. “But for right now I prefer the training anyway. Meetings can get boring pretty quickly if there’s nothing going on, which is oddly enough is something we hope for.” “Yeah. I can understand that. Why don’t you come to the library with me after this then?” She suggested. I glanced up at the clock to gauge what time it was. I still had a few hours before I’d meet up with Jaxon for our daily briefing. I might as well take the time to join her. Maybe with another set of eyes we can find some information on me finally. “Sure.” I accepted her offer. We go back to join the others to finish off the training session. When we’re done Dee and I get changed in one of the locker rooms in the facility. Then we exit the training center and walk towards the library. I look around at the pack hard at work as we walk. For more practice I try to pick up on their energies. I can tell most of them are content with what they’re doing. Some are clearly tired and have some personal things on their mind. Then there’s just a couple who seem to feel pretty negative about what they’re doing. I made a note to check back in on the ones feeling negatively. I wanted to make sure that their feelings were just temporary. If not then we needed to help accommodate them to help change it. This was my pack now and I wanted to make sure they were all taken care of and happy. “Just about there.” Dee’s voice spoke as she pulled my attention away from reading the others. “Get anything good?” Dee obviously knew about this gift. She also knew that it was one of the things Jaxon wanted me to train on. The stronger it was, the better I could find any traitors. It also would help me uncover how true Alpha Parker was to the idea of being allies. “No, not really.” I answered. “Just pretty much the same thing as usual.” We walked up the library steps and entered inside of it. Dee led the way as this is the place she was responsible for. “I’ve just got to do a check on the books, want to help?” “Of course.” I nodded. She took one side of the library and I took the other. It wasn’t very big but it still contained a good amount of books. A lot of them were just stories and tales about our kind. Others held some pretty important information about us as well. Those books were the ones that had to remain in the library at all times. The only way they were checked out was with approval from one of the higher up members. From my understanding that didn’t happen very much either. I figured out the reason why after a few times here. Dark Moon’s library held the only copies of a few books. There was a lot of information in just this room. Not all of the information was in our favor though, some of it contained our weaknesses. Books like that were only to be touched with a higher member around to monitor what it was being used for. I continued making my rounds with Dee. Everything seemed to be in it’s proper place. At least almost everything. It was when I got into the restricted section that I noticed the books were slightly off. Like there was one missing. “Dee, are you missing any books over here?” I hollered out as I wasn’t sure how close she was to me. She rushed over and I could see the panic set in on her face as she realized what section I was in. “No, no. One can’t be missing. It’s impossible.” I pointed out how the books are slightly leaning more than any of the other books on the shelves. “It seems like one is.” I noticed her energy shift. She’s nervous and stressing out. I can understand why. Her job she was given was to guard books like these with her life. To have one missing like this was a big deal. “Dee. It’s okay.” I attempted to calm her down. “I have to find out which book it is. I can’t leave here until I do.” She spoke frantically and rushed off. She came back with a packet of paper in her hands. I watched as she began to account for each book. I stayed out of her way as I didn’t want to cause any stress to her. She clearly had a system that worked for her and I wasn’t about to mess it up. After a little while it seems like she finally figured out which book was missing. She didn’t say a word as she rushed off to the computer. I followed her as I’m curious about this myself. The more I knew would also help her case if she gets reprimanded for this missing book. She searched a few things and quickly read the screen. As she continued reading I can see her energy get a little more relaxed but there’s still a little something off about it. “I have good news and I have bad news.” She sighed as she looked at me. “What’s the good news?” I asked. “The good news is this book didn’t go missing on my watch. I just somehow kept missing that it was supposed to be there.” She explained. “Apparently it was one stolen a few years ago when there was a breach in the pack, this was something that happened before Jaxon came in to take over Dark Moon.” “That’s great that it wasn't on you then.” I responded. “But what’s the bad news?” “The book title is The Moon Goddess’ Unique Creations.” She was hesitant to keep going but she did anyway. “This is the book I needed to go through to determine what exactly is going on with you. It’s the only copy of it and someone took off with it years ago.” “So we’ll never know then?” I felt slightly defeated. It was one thing to think some information was here and we just had to wait to stumble upon it. It was a whole different situation knowing it was gone. “If we can get details of the breach I'm sure we can start tracking it down but it’ll take time.” She looked at the computer as she thought for a moment. She then looked back up to me. “Someone else out there either knows what you are or they have a pretty good idea about it. They wouldn’t know unless they have this book or met you. Any guesses?” Only one person came to mind. The same person who had been hell bent on not letting me go. “Matteo.”
