Chapter 2

I rolled my eyes and picked my suit up, tossing it across the room. I looked at Carson, who raised his brow at me. I smirked before going over to my wardrobe and picking out some sweatpants and a hoodie. I held them up in front of Carson, who smiled at me. Then, he went to his wardrobe and pulled his sweatpants and hoodie out. "I hate how they treat you, Car," I muttered. He nodded and smiled sadly at me. "As long as they treat you well." He replied. I shook my head and sighed. "You're my brother, my twin. They hurt you, it hurts me." I whimpered. "Let's get this over with and we can plan our escape." I took a deep breath as he went into the bathroom. I sat on the edge of my bed and pulled on my hoodie before putting on my sweatpants. I flopped back down on my bed, staring at the ceiling. It wasn't always like this. Our parents doted on us both. Our mum didn't have a good upbringing with her parents, she never tells us exactly what happened, but I do know our grandparents weren't the nicest. She always said she wanted us to have a childhood she didn't have, and we did for a while. We can't stay here. Carson can't stay here. I sighed and sat up as Carson came out of the bathroom. "You ready?" He asked quickly, his voice laced with slight panic. I nodded and went over to him. "I'm not going to let anything happen to you. It's you and me against the world, right?" I smiled at him as I held my fist out. He bumped my fist and nodded. We left the bedroom and came face to face with our parents. My dad just rolled his eyes, clicked his tongue and stormed down the stairs. "What the Goddess are you wearing, Caleb?" She shrilled. I glanced down at my outfit and shrugged. "That suit was specially made for you." She sighed. "Did you get one made for Carson?" I asked, raising my brow. When she didn't answer, I scoffed and chuckled humourlessly. "Didn't think so." I snapped, "Come on, we don't want everyone to think we aren't the loving family you make us out to be, do you?" I snarled. I dragged Carson down the stairs with me as mum rolled her eyes at me. I don't understand why I can say whatever I want to our mum, and she doesn't bite back. It's like she's afraid of something. I wish I could work out what. Dad, on the other hand, he's not as bad as mum. When it comes to Carson but he has no love or time for him, and he shows with his actions. I don't get away with talking back at him. "I'm scared." Carson worried through the link. "There's nothing to be scared of. No one is going to say anything to you. You'll be fine. I promise." I reassured through our link. I heard him take a deep breath, but he didn't reply to that. The nervousness was kicking in as we reached the centre of the pack lands. Everyone was here, all waiting to see their future Alpha and Beta shift for the first time. I could feel the tension rolling off Carson. I placed my hand on his shoulder and squeezed. "You and me, remember?" I whispered, trying to ease his mind. I felt him relax a little, so I removed my hand as we stopped in front of a little makeshift stage. My dad was standing in the centre of the stage with his Beta standing next to him. Mum went up the small steps and took her place beside dad. A true Alpha and Luna. "Thank you all for attending this shifting ceremony for my sons." My dad bellowed. I cringed at him and looked at Carson. His whole body was shaking, and I just wanted to grab him and get him somewhere he felt safe. "Please, Caleb and Carson, come and take centre stage." My dad smiled at us both, but I could see the forced smile at Carson. I held my tongue. There was a time and place to disobey your father... But disobeying your Alpha in public is sealing your fate. "Deep breath, Carson. It'll be over before you know it." I tried reassuring him the best I could. He glanced at me and gave me a weak smile that didn't do much for easing my anxiety. I made my way onto the stage, making sure Carson was following close to me. "You are all here to witness your future Alpha and Beta as they shift for the first time and gain their wolves. Without further ado, Caleb and Carson Stone." He announced proudly. We stood side by side with our parents behind us. Carson's eyes went wide, and he started looking around. I tried mind linking him, but I couldn't get through. I grabbed his shoulders and made him look at me. "What's up?" I rushed out. He shook his head and then recoiled over in pain. He was starting the shift. I stood and watched as his body convulsed, causing him to fall to the floor. He writhed around in pain, screaming out. If it wasn't because of his pain, I would have been shocked that I could hear his voice, even if it was screaming. I watched in surprise as his arms and legs started breaking and twisting in ways you would never believe unless you saw it. Tears were falling from his eyes. I glanced at our parents; they were watching him closely, eyes going wide now and again. It makes sense for him to shift first. He was born first, so I'll be shifting after him but watching him, I don't think I wanna shift. I cringed as his back arched and twisted, making him roll onto his front. Fur began spouting from his skin, slowly and painfully. Suddenly everything stopped. He was still. No sound was coming out of him. There was more fur than the skin on his body. "Mum? Dad?" I whispered, glancing at them. Tears flowed down my cheeks. I stepped forward to move towards Carson and dad held his hand up, stopping me. I scowled at him, and he shot me a look that made me freeze in place. A loud snap echoed throughout the pack lands. If I had blinked, I would have missed it. Carson rose on 4 legs. Standing in front of me was a stunning midnight blue wolf. I gazed at him in awe. He was massive. He stared back at me before turning his gaze to our parents. Their eyes were wide, and dad looked shocked and a little impressed whereas mum had a panicked look in her eyes which confused me. He bared his teeth at them and growled. "Carson," Dad spoke clearly. It was a warning. Carson's wolf instantly backed down. He sat on his hind legs and looked back at me. I waited for the pain to take me... But it never happened. Chapter 4 Whispers and murmurs spread throughout the crowd. Carson was still in his wolf form, his gaze locked on me. My parents were talking between themselves while I stood here wondering what the f**k was going on? I should have begun the shifting process or at least received my wolf. But my mind was empty. I have no wolf... I can't even feel him. "Dad..." I whispered. He glanced at me and I shivered. "What's happening?" I whined. The look on his face nearly brought me to my knees... He was repulsed by me. Now I know how Carson feels. I backed away, tears threatening to spill. I was scared and confused, and no one was helping. Carson's wolf rose and slowly edged towards me. I gazed at him. He was truly remarkable... I knew he would be. But I was feeling slightly envious. He has his wolf. Why don't I have mine? I turned on my heel and rushed off the stage. I needed to be anywhere, but here, I hated everyone's eyes on me. "Caleb, wait!" Carson shouted through our link. I stopped and glanced back at him. Dad had stopped him and commanded him using his Alpha tone. Carson couldn't come after me... I watched as Dad kneeled in front of Carson and petted his wolf. It's a sign of affection and love for their pup. My heart hurt at sight. All I ever wanted them to do, was accept Carson and love him as they should. Carson's wolf never looked my way. All three of them stood centre stage while the crowd went wild. My breath hitched in my throat, and I choked back a sob. I darted between some houses, heading straight for the forest. I sprinted through the forest as tears clouded my vision. My head was jumbled. Nothing made sense. I didn't understand why I wasn't blessed with a wolf. The one thing every werewolf is gifted is a wolf and a mate. Would I be blessed with a mate having no wolf? I'm never going to experience the joys of being a wolf. I said tonight was going to change everything. I just didn't expect it to change for the worse. The only good thing about this is they may have just accepted Carson as their son. My chest was tight, and every breath I was taking felt like I was burning inside. My legs were stinging from pushing myself further and further. I ran until my legs gave out under me. I lay in the mud, staring up at the sky. The crescent moon was bright, with millions of stars littered around it... I stared at the moon, hoping I could be granted my wolf if I wished enough. I let the tears fall freely as I closed my eyes. I felt humiliated, standing in front of the full pack and them witnessing everything. They will never follow an Alpha who can't even shift. A werewolf without a wolf... Sounds like a bad joke. That's what I am, one big f*****g joke. I heard a branch snap to my right and kept my eyes closed. If this is where I die, I'll happily surrender. "Caleb?" Oliver spoke, causing me to sit up abruptly. I wiped my face before I turned to him. "They sent you, didn't they?" I asked as I stood up. He nodded. Pity is written all over his face. "I need to take you back home." He stated. I nodded and went towards him. "Where are they?" I questioned as we made the walk back. He shoved his hands in his pockets and kicked some stones in his path. "They're bonding with Carson." He replied, gaping at the floor. I sighed as we continued the walk in silence. I'm happy they're finally giving Carson the attention he needs from them. He deserves it. I just want to lock myself away in my room and not speak to anyone. We arrived back at the centre of the pack lands. The stage had been cleared away, but there was still some of the pack around. Some were in human form, while others were in wolf form. I could see my dad's wolf in the middle of the crowd. He was a large dusky grey wolf with piercing brown eyes. My mum was in her wolf form. She was a smaller dusty brown wolf with her pale green eyes. In the middle of them stood Carson's wolf. It was unusual for a wolf to not match either of their parents, but they didn't seem to care. Even our eyes don't match our parents. Carson's eyes are a sooty grey, whereas mine eyes are more silver. Dad's wolf turned his head when I stopped in the middle of the crowd. I may not have a wolf, but I still smell like one, or at least I smell of the pack. He came towards me. I stood straighter and didn't back down. Oliver stepped next to me, holding a pair of sweatpants. My dad shifted and then pulled the sweatpants on that Oliver had. He looked at me and placed his hands on my shoulders.
