Leo ran an information technology company. It had started out as nothing more than a tiny home studio, but over the last two years, it blew up. Now they leased an entire floor of the office building.
I had never paid much attention to the place before, but the second I stepped through the doors, I realized something surprising. Every single woman working here was stunning. A whole room full of beautiful faces made quite a sight.
I was still taking in the view when my gaze accidentally locked with someone else's across the room. It was Evan Wade, Leo's best friend and one of the original co-founders, who had started the business with him.
Evan blinked in surprise when he saw me, then immediately walked over to greet me. "Stella. What are you doing here?"
"I just came by to check things out," I replied.
Evan smiled and said, "Unfortunately, he is out of town signing a contract today."
"I know. He told me yesterday. I just wanted to wander around on my own. Don't let me keep you from your work."
Evan nodded, but he still felt too awkward to leave me wandering by myself. He stuck by my side, making small talk as we walked.
Probably because outsiders rarely dropped by unannounced, the whole office turned to look at me the second I walked in, all of them throwing curious glances my way.
I met each of their eyes one by one, scanning for the woman I had seen in the video yesterday.
Evan could not figure out why I had suddenly shown up out of the blue, and he definitely looked a little on edge.
"Hey, Stella, do you want some coffee? A client gave it to me yesterday, and it is actually really good. Let me brew a cup for you."
I waved him off, telling him there was no need to go to the trouble. Right then, a girl stepped out of Leo's office.
She wore cutoff denim shorts and a colorful printed button-down, had bright, fair skin, and a striking figure. She looked young and fresh-faced, and a faint whiff of Bvlgari perfume drifted off her as she walked.
What was more, her build was uncannily similar to the woman I had seen in the video...
The longer I stared, the tighter my chest felt. I turned to Evan and asked, "Who is she?"
Evan grinned and explained it away casually. "She is the new intern. Twenty-three this year, just graduated from college."
"Young, that is for sure."
Evan never picked up on the edge in my voice. He did not think anything of it, just kept chattering away. "This girl is really sweet, super detail-oriented. Last time someone spilled coffee all over Leo's shirt, she pulled out a stain remover spray right away and got it completely clean."
He did not notice how my face had gone dark and just kept rambling. "So Leo promoted her to personal assistant after that. She is a total whiz at organizing files. Ever since she started working for him, Leo never messed up a single document."
"Is that so? She really is that thoughtful, huh," I commented.
That was when Evan finally noticed how cold my expression had gotten. He froze, completely confused.
"Why don't you go back to your work? I want to go check out Leo's office. I have barely ever even been inside it."
I did not even wait for him to reply before turning and striding straight toward Leo's office door.
The girl stepped forward and put a hand out to block me. "I am sorry, this is Mr. Gray's private office. He is not here right now."
"He is not here, so I am not allowed to go in?" I asked.
The girl puffed up like a mother hen guarding her nest. "Mr. Gray told me before he left that there are a lot of important documents in here. No one is allowed to go in without him."
I laughed. "Then why are you allowed to go in?"
The girl puffed out her chest, totally self-righteous, and insisted, "I am his personal assistant. No one gets in here except me."
I shot her a cool, sidelong glance. "So that means even me, his legal wife, cannot go in?"
The girl's face drained of all color the second those words left my mouth.
Every head in the office snapped toward us, every pair of eyes widening in shock.
It made sense—no one here knew me. I had barely set foot in Leo's company ever since we got married.
And that was not an accident. He never wanted me here anyway.
He was not just hiding one little "mistress" here, that much was obvious.
Evan hurried over immediately and ripped into the girl without holding back. "This is Leo's wife. What are you doing, stopping her?"
The girl's face flushed bright red from embarrassment, and she stammered out an apology right away. "I am sorry, Ms. Blake. I had no idea."
I tilted my head and looked at her, a half-smile playing on my lips. "Why so scared? You look like you just got caught doing something you should not. Relax, I am not going to bite you. Evan told me how capable you are. No wonder Leo can handle all that busy work so smoothly with you around. You have been such a big help, haven't you?"
After that dig, her face dropped even more. She mumbled that she had work to do and scurried off in a blink.
The faint smile on my lips faded completely. I had lost all desire to stick around any longer.
