Chapter 5

I hired a caregiver to watch Lucas temporarily, then brought my mom to the same hospital for a physical examination. It turned out to be terminal lung cancer. When I got the report, my mind went completely blank. Bad news came one after another, crushing me so hard I could barely breathe. But Mom stayed perfectly calm. She even smiled and tried to soothe me. "What is meant to be is meant to be," she said. "This is just the trial I was fated to go through. But plenty of people get sick and survive, you know? Tons of cancer patients live ten or even twenty years after diagnosis..." She kept that soft smile on her face the whole time she talked, but my eyes grew wet. She was only putting on a brave face to keep me from falling apart. Mom opted for the most conservative treatment plan, and we checked her into the hospital right away. All of a sudden, both my child and my mother were admitted one after another. I was at a loss, but I gritted my teeth and pushed through. I dialed Leo again. That same woman answered the phone. "Dear, he is still asleep. It is too early," she purred. "You did not tell him about our kid, did you?" I asked. She sounded surprised for a split second, then broke into a shy, awkward little laugh. "Well, after he got out of the shower yesterday, we... did not get the chance. He is still sleeping right now, so... what if I send you the address? You can come talk to him yourself?" she replied. This time, I had run into a total snake. Before I could even say anything, she dropped her voice to a breathy whisper. "Got to go, dear, he is waking up now," she whispered. She hung up. Rage coiled tight in my chest, making it ache and leaving me breathless in waves. Right that second, a text arrived on my phone. It was an address, sent by that snake. The address was for a hotel in the suburbs. After asking the caregiver to look after Lucas and my mom, I went to the address. I had barely arrived when I spotted Leo walking out of the hotel with her right behind him. Leo glanced quickly around, making sure there was not a single soul nearby. Then he boldly slid one big hand over to squeeze her waist, pressed his forehead to hers, and stole a quick, sneaky kiss. A cold disgust crawled over every inch of my skin, and I felt nauseous. Of course, my hands were not idle either. With the sound of the camera shutter clicking repeatedly, I took photos.
