CHAPTER 24 — Bloodletting
The metallic tang of iron was so thick it coated the back of Aurora’s throat, suffocating her more than the stale, frozen air of the upper-floor cell.
Another violent storm of Kael’s bloodlust was tearing through the room. He moved with a manic, disjointed energy tonight, his amber eyes completely swallowed by the feral light of his wolf. The silver hunting dagger in his hand was no longer tracing elegant, agonizing lines; it was a blur of silver and orange torchlight. He cut her repeatedly—deep, jagged slashes across her forearms, her calves, and the unmarred patches of skin on her thighs.
Blood flowed freely, no longer trickling in neat streams but spilling in heavy, dark droplets that splattered against the stone. It pooled around her bare feet, spreading across the grooved granite floor until the entire center of her cell was covered in a crimson reflection of the torchlight.
Yet, she gave him nothing.
Her teeth were locked in a vice-like grip, her jaw muscles trembling from the sheer force of her restraint. The white-hot agony of the silver slicing through her poisoned flesh was blinding, but she anchored her mind in the freezing depths of her hatred. She refused to make a sound. No gasp. No cry. Not even a heavy breath.
Her absolute silence was an invisible wall, and Kael was slamming against it.
"Scream for me!" he roared, his voice dropping into a distorted Alpha growl that rattled the iron chains. He brought the blade down again, cutting a deep gash across her shoulder blade. "Beg me to stop, you miserable b***h! Give me a sound!"
The lack of a whimper irritated him to the point of frenzy. It stripped the transactional pleasure from his cruelty, turning his grand exhibition of power into a pathetic, solitary tantrum. When he finally realized her lips would remain sealed, he hurled the bloody dagger against the iron door with a deafening clang and stormed out, his heavy boots splashing through the puddle of her blood.
Left in the ringing silence, Aurora let her head fall back against the cold stone wall. She didn't know how many days, or possibly weeks, had passed since she was first brought to this wing. Time had lost its boundaries, dissolving into a monstrous, repetitive cycle. She was subjected to a mild, agonizing torture every single day—a sudden burn from a silver coin, a precise cut, or a suffocating grip on her broken wrists. And then, once or twice a week, she was forced to suffer a full-blown storm of Kael’s unhinged bloodlust, where he treated her body like a canvas for his political frustrations.
The heavy lock clicked, and the iron door creaked open smoothly.
The two young beta maids, Martha and Lily, scurried into the cell like mice, carrying a fresh basin of steaming water and clean linen cloths. They worked tirelessly, their hands moving with a frantic, desperate efficiency as they fell to their knees to wash the blood from Aurora’s skin.
For weeks, these two servants had tended to her with an almost religious devotion. They didn't just perform their duties; they served her with a deep, reverent gratitude that Aurora hadn't understood at first. But the reality of the mansion was simple and brutal. Since Kael had begun to play with Aurora, he hadn't touched a single other servant in the estate. His dark, violent impulses were entirely consumed by the challenge of breaking the Nightfall daughter. Aurora had unwittingly become a lightning rod, drawing all the lightning of the Alpha's madness away from the vulnerable betas. The maids knew this, and out of a desperate desire for self-preservation, they did everything in their power to keep Aurora alive and in relatively good shape.
"Hold still, my lady," Martha whispered, her voice trembling as she pressed a warm cloth to the fresh slashes on Aurora's thigh. "We brought a little extra lard to grease the bandages. It will keep them from sticking to the raw flesh when the blood dries."
From time to time, when the guards in the corridor were distracted, the maids dared to speak to her. They became a fragile lifeline of human voices in her dark world, constantly trying to support her and encourage her to stay alive.
"You must keep eating the broth, Lady Aurora," Lily murmured, her eyes darting nervously toward the open door as she wrung out a crimson-stained cloth. "You have to survive this. Time is your ally, not his. Eventually, he will grow tired of your silence. The novelty will fade. Or... or he will find a new toy in the suburbs of his own northern territory. There is always someone new—the daughter of an accused member of his own pack dragged into the manor for treason or suspected rogue sympathy. Once he shifts his focus to another unfortunate soul within his borders, this will get less intense. It might even stop completely, and you'll be moved to the lower levels."
Aurora slowly opened her heavy, feverish eyes, staring down at the young girl. Her throat was so dry it felt like sandpaper, but she forced the words out. "He... he wants to break me. He won't stop."
Martha paused, looking up from the floor, her expression a complex mask of pity and exhaustion. "There is also the option to submit, my lady," she whispered softly, her voice barely a breath. "You don't have to carry the weight of the entire mansion on your shoulders. Once you submit... once you just cry out and show him he finally got what he wanted, his ego will be satisfied. He might let you out of this cell. You could get a job in the kitchens or the laundry, just like we have."
Martha’s voice dropped even lower, a dark, hidden truth slipping from her lips. "Once... a year ago... we were in a similar position. Before you arrived, his eyes were on us. We know what it is to be the toy."
Suddenly, Lily reached out and sharply shoved Martha’s shoulder, her face turning pale with terror. "Shush! Keep quiet!" she hissed, her voice frantic as she glared at her companion. "Don't say another word! Do you want to be dragged back into his chambers? Do you want to be the one carried out in a sheet like the older maid?"
Martha instantly clamped her mouth shut, her eyes wide with a profound, suffocating fear. She looked down at the basin of red water, her shoulders shaking. She didn't want to be tortured again. The brutal, unvarnished mathematics of the slave quarters was clear: as long as Aurora remained Kael's primary plaything, as long as she absorbed his fury and stayed alive to bear it, the rest of the servants were safe.
Aurora watched the silent exchange between the two terrified girls. A cold, heavy understanding settled deep into her chest. Her suffering was the shield that protected the innocent lives in this house. If she died, the monster would simply turn his fangs back to the maids. If she submitted, she might save herself a fraction of physical pain, but she would lose the only weapon she had left—her total psychological independence.
As Martha gently wrapped the clean linen around her bleeding arms, Aurora closed her eyes. The path of submission was a trap, a slow death of the soul. She would look at the maids, she would accept their care, and she would use their desperation to keep her body alive. But she would never give Kael his victory. She would remain the cage that held the monster's madness, keeping everyone else safe, until the day she found a way to tear his world apart.
