​The locker room at the far end of the athletic wing was empty, bathed in the hum of fluorescent lights and the heavy scent of industrial bleach. Avery pushed the door open, her body moving on pure, mechanical instinct as she slipped into the space. She locked the heavy deadbolt behind her, the sharp click of metal bringing a minuscule shred of comfort to her frayed nerves. ​She was completely alone. ​She walked toward the row of porcelain sinks, her limbs heavy, as if the air itself had turned to lead. When she reached the cracked mirror, she stopped and gripped the edges of the cold basin. Her knuckles turned a stark, bloodless white. ​The reflection staring back at her was a stranger.
