7: Coming Home

1256 Words
The journey back to Hillguard Manor was quiet, the relief of returning home tempered by the memories of the wilds and the ever-present threat of the hybrids. Ian drove Lilly and Rose through the familiar woods, the landscape gradually softening from the harsh wilderness to the more cultivated grounds surrounding the manor. The air was colder here, but it carried a sense of safety, a promise of warmth and shelter that had been absent for so long. As they approached the manor, the grand stone building loomed against the winter sky, its windows glowing with the light of a fire inside. Ian could feel Lilly's tension ease slightly as she recognized the place she had once called home. Rose, too, clung to her sister's hand, her wide eyes taking in the sight of the manor that had felt so distant in the wilds. The front doors opened before they could reach them, Maria and Alistair rushed out to greet them. Maria's face was pale with worry, but her eyes shone with tears of joy as she saw her daughters safe and sound. "Lilly! Rose!" Maria cried, pulling them into a tight embrace. Her hands trembled as she held them, as if afraid they might disappear again. "Oh, my girls, thank God you're safe." Alistair, usually so composed, couldn't hide the relief that softened his stern features. He placed a gentle hand on each of their heads, his voice thick with emotion. "We've missed you both so much. The manor hasn't been the same without you." Wanda appeared behind them, her cane tapping on the stone steps as she approached. Her eyes, usually so sharp and calculating, were misty as she reached out for her granddaughters. "You two scared the life out of me," she said, her voice wavering as she pulled them both into a hug. "Don't ever do that again, do you hear me? " Rose buried her face in Wanda's shoulder, her small body shaking with silent sobs. Lilly, too, let herself relax in the embrace, the weight of the past months finally lifting from her shoulders. "We're sorry, Grandma," Lilly whispered, her voice muffled against Wanda's coat. "We didn't mean to worry you." Wanda pulled back just enough to cup Lilly's face in her hands, her expression softening. "I know, my dear. You're a survivor just like your mother. I'm glad you're home now, and that's all that matters." The reunion was filled with tears and laughter, the warmth of the manor a stark contrast to the cold, unforgiving wilds. After the initial shock of seeing them safe, Maria ushered everyone inside, where the fire roared in the hearth, casting a golden glow over the room. The manor was decorated in Christmas trees, glittery tensal, bows, and ceramic Christmas decor. Lilly smiled she had made it home before Christmas. Dinner was a happy affair, filled with the comfort of familiar food and the presence of loved ones. Ian watched as Lilly and Rose ate, their faces were filled with contentment and hunger, a sense of peace settling over him. They were safe now, back where they belonged. Once dinner was finished and the dishes cleared away, Ian gently took Lilly's hand. "Come on," he said softly. "Let's get you settled for the night." Lilly nodded, her eyes heavy with exhaustion. Lilly hugged her sister Rose good night. The events of the past few months had taken their toll on her, and the warmth of the manor was lulling her into a sense of security she hadn't felt in a long time. Ian led her up the grand marble staircase, past the portraits of ancestors long gone, passed her sister and her old room, to his room. The space was familiar and comforting, with thick curtains drawn against the cold night and a fire crackling in the hearth. The stereo system was playing Firefly by Steve Mocco. Lilly smiled as she looked in the bathroom. A bath had been prepared, the water steaming gently in the large tub, scented with herbs to soothe and relax. Lilly smiled faintly as she stepped into the room, taking in the surroundings. "It feels like it's been years since I was last here," she murmured looking at the photos of Ian, Darius, and Chester on some of their trips together. She smiled seeing a new addition. It was a Picture Ian had taken of them on the Ferris wheel at the full moon festival in Sterling. Ian squeezed her hand gently. "You're home now," he repeated, his voice filled with quiet reassurance. "Take your time. I'll be right here." Lilly nodded and moved to the clawed-feet bathtub, slipping out of her dirty clothes and sinking into the warm water. The heated herb water seeped into her bones, washing away the grime of the wild and the tension that had settled in her muscles. Lilly closed her eyes, letting the warmth envelop her. She was safe now. Ian sat nearby, his gaze soft as he watched her. There was something so vulnerable about Lilly at that moment, a fragility that tugged at his heart. She had scars on her from being in the wilds. He wanted to protect her, to keep her safe from all the horrors of the world. She had survived with the others, and he was overjoyed. but Ian knew Lilly had changed due to the wilds. He wanted to be there for her, to give her the comfort she so desperately needed to get back to normal. After a while, Lilly opened her eyes and looked at him, her expression softening. "Thank you, Ian," she said quietly. "For everything." Ian shook his head, his voice gentle. "You don't need to thank me, Lilly. I'm just glad you're safe." Once she had finished her bath, Ian handed her a soft towel, helping her into it. Lilly dried herself, not caring if Ian was seeing her naked. Ian cleared his throat by handing her clothes. Lilly smirked, slipping them on. Lilly was not the shy girl Ian had known her to be. Ian shook his head smirking and guided her to the bed, where she sank into the plush mattress with a sigh of contentment. Ian slipped in beside her, wrapping his arms around her as she curled into his chest. "I've missed hearing your heartbeat when I slept." Lilly nuzzled his chest, not feeling the connection the alpha gave them. She had felt the longing and the need to be with Ian through it. Without it felt like something was missing. She wanted it back. "I missed you. " Ian mumbled sleepily. They lay there in silence for a while, the crackling of the fire the only sound in the room. Lilly rested her head against Ian's chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. The rhythm was soothing, a reminder that she was safe, that she was home. Ian pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head, his hand stroking her hair. "I'm not going anywhere," he whispered, his voice filled with quiet determination. "You're safe with me." Lilly smiled against his chest, her eyes growing heavy as exhaustion finally took over. "I know," she murmured, her voice barely audible. "I trust you, Ian." As sleep claimed her, Ian held her close, his heart swelling with a fierce protectiveness. They had faced so much together, and now they could finally rest. The world outside might be full of dangers, but here, at this moment, they had found some peace to finally sleep.
