Chapter 4: Shadows of the Past

1395 Words
Soren and Elara felt the earth tremble beneath their boots as the weird glow from the abyss became stronger, creating long, jagged shadows on the trees. Elara had never seen a figure like the one that had risen from the depths; it was a mass of blackness that appeared to move and writhe, as though it were composed of living smoke. Elara was chilled to the bone by the evil intelligence that protruded from its twin red ember eyes. Muscles taut, ready to explode, Soren stepped in front of her, protective. Even so, though, he felt the weight of the unknown bearing down on him despite his strength and experience. This was more than just a forest beast; it was something much older, rooted in the sordid past of the region. Elara's thoughts were racing. Although she had heard legends from her childhood about old spirits that lurked in the deepest reaches of the forest, she never imagined that she would really come across them. However, it was evident that this was more than just a legend due to the pulsating radiance, the ground trembling, and the figure's menacing presence. "Who are you?" With a low growl in his voice, Soren demanded. The person remained silent in response. Rather, it approached nearer, its shape wavering like a fading light. Elara experienced an intense weight in her chest, as though the air surrounding them was becoming increasingly dense and restricting her ability to breathe. She struggled to remain upright as she gripped Soren's arm. The figure stopped abruptly, and the ground underneath it appeared to tremble and warp like a disturbed pond's reflection. A voice spoke up from the changing throng, disembodied, disdainful, and frigid. It muttered, seeming to be speaking simultaneously in all directions, "Cursed Alpha." "You have disobeyed the laws of nature. This forest retains memory. Soren did not back down, even when his eyes narrowed. "I refuse to follow orders from shadows." With a terrifying sound that reverberated through the trees, the figure laughed. Orders are not relevant here. It all comes down to balance. You are a disturbance and a festering sore in this land, Soren Blackwood. Looking at Soren, Elara's thoughts were racing. How could this being be aware of Soren's identity, history, and curse? She felt fear grabbing hold of her, but she made herself strong. She could sense Soren's anxiety, and she knew that this creature, whatever it was, had influence over him in ways she was not yet aware of. Elara felt an icy grasp encircling her heart as the figure's attention moved to her. "And you," it said in a hushed, hateful voice. You're not who you seem to be. It is no coincidence that you are here. Elara tensed up. How could it be aware of her? Her entire life, she had been invisible and unimportant, living in the shadows. She was shocked to realize that this thing had been observing her for years, as it talked with a familiar tone. Soren’s growl deepened, his protective instincts flaring. “Stay away from her,” he warned, but the figure only seemed amused by his defiance. “You cannot protect her from herself, Alpha,” it said darkly. “She will be the undoing of you both.” The ground shook abruptly before Soren could react, and the figure vanished back into the abyss, leaving behind just the tiniest remnants of smoke and that lingering, ominous energy. With no answers, Soren and Elara stood on the precipice, gasping for air and feeling uneasy. Elara's thoughts raced as she attempted to interpret the interaction. The creature's accusations, warnings, and suggestions of a truth she was not prepared to face reverberated in her ears. She glanced at Soren, hoping to see some indication that he was cognizant of what had transpired, but his expression was reserved and shuttered. He wasn't about to divulge his feelings, whatever they might be. Finally, with a clipped tone, Soren stated, "We need to keep moving." "There's danger in this forest." Elara agreed, but she still felt uneasy about it. She couldn't get rid of the feeling that they were being followed and observed by eyes that were seeing far more than either of them could possibly know as they made their way through the thick underbrush. They spent hours making their way more into the forest, the route becoming more perilous as they went. The trees appeared to encircle them, their limbs grasping the heavens as to bony hands. Elara became agitated at every sound, even the slightest rustle of leaves or the snap of a twig. They discovered a little clearing to rest in as night fell, but there was tension between them all. Elara paced wildly, her thoughts racing with things she was too shy to ask, while Soren sat with his back to a tree, staring out at the black horizon. Her words came out of nowhere, unable to contain her thoughts, "What did that thing mean?" "What about me and you?" Soren took a while to respond. His jaw clinched as he struggled with long-buried memories as he gazed into the shadows. He finally added, his voice thick with a mix of grief and rage, "There are forces in this forest older than any of us." "Powers that retain everything." Elara ceased her pacing and fixed her gaze on his. "You believe it is related to your curse?" She only needed Soren's silence to confirm her suspicions. Whatever it was they were dealing with had roots in the past, in the sins of the ancestors and the unbreakable curses that still lay in place. However, the atmosphere surrounding them changed, becoming stuffy and unpleasant before Elara could move any farther. The temperature dropped, and from the shadows outside their camp came a low, savage snarl. With a stiffened muscle, Soren leaped to his feet and looked over the treeline. "Elara, please return," he commanded, his voice full of urgency. Elara's heart skipped a beat as her eyes went toward the sound. A massive figure, much bigger than any wolf she had ever seen, loomed out of the darkness. Its fangs dripped with a black, sticky liquid that hissed as it hit the ground, and its eyes shone a horrible yellow. This was no typical outlaw. This was something much worse: a monster corrupted by evil sorcery, an embodiment of the fury of the jungle. Moving to put himself in between Elara and the beast, Soren took a step forward. He hissed, "Stay behind me," but Elara could see the tension in his eyes. He wasn't confident he could prevail in this battle. With all the power he could summon, Soren slammed his body into the beast as it attacked, its jaws cracking with bone-crushing force. A battle of unadulterated determination and unadulterated rage, they collided in a hail of growls and blood. With every instinct telling her to flee, Elara watched in dread, but she was powerless to leave him—not now, not after everything. Looking about in a desperate attempt to find anything that could assist, she noticed a faint shimmer close to the clearing's edge—a shard of silver that was partially buried in the ground. She ran toward it without thinking, her fingers curling around the cold metal. An ancient and worn dagger, it buzzed with a strength that spoke to her soul. Elara felt pulled to it—as if it had been waiting for her—but she wasn't sure why. With a rush of energy flowing through her, she turned back to the fight. As the beast continued to attack him, Soren was having difficulty and his motions were becoming slower. Elara was aware that she needed to take action, but she also understood that wielding the dagger would alter everything because it was a weapon designed for purposes beyond killing. Elara lunged at the thing with a renewed sense of resolve, the dagger getting brighter as she went. Elara felt a tug as she raised it aloft, and the thing turned to face her with its brilliant eyes. It was as though the dagger and the creature were two parts of a fractured whole. Elara realized that whatever occurred next would permanently change their fortunes as the moment drew to a close and the world around them held its breath.
