9 Meimi The next day 5AM I stand before the Faraday Center for Magnetic Field Research. That’s a mouthful. Everyone calls it the Tusk, mostly because that’s how the building is shaped. It’s a great glass tooth that towers over the city skyline. Looking down, I inspect the semi-transparent ground that loops about the Tusk. Made from MonsterGlaz, it’s clear enough to show the massive web of metal tubing that powers the Tusk under the earth. I kneel down for a better look at the magnetic reactor which serves at the beating heart of the Tusk. Below me, a system of tubes and gears churn away, motions that remind me of a massive watch ticking.
