Chapter eight

But just as Jack was about to deepen the kiss, the unmistakable sound of a key turning in the lock jolted them apart. The door swung open, and there, in the doorway, stood a slightly shocked older woman. It was his mother, her eyes wide with surprise. The scent of her perfume filled the room, a stark contrast to the lingering musk of their passion. "Jack?" she called out, her voice a blend of curiosity and concern. "I didn't know you had company." Jack's arms fell away from Ella as he spun around to face his mother, his cheeks flushing a deep shade of red. "Mom," he said, his voice strangled. "This is Ella, Rachel's roommate." Rachel had warned Ella about the potential for unexpected interruptions, but she hadn't anticipated meeting Jack's mother in such a compromising position. Mrs. Thompson looked between the two of them, her gaze lingering on Ella's flushed cheeks and Jack's disheveled state. Rachel's advice about being prepared for the unexpected played in Ella's mind as she straightened the jersey she wore, trying to cover herself more modestly. "Ella," Jack's mother said with a forced smile, her eyes taking in the scene. "It's so nice to finally meet you."Jack cleared his throat, trying to regain his composure. "Mom," he said, his voice tight. "I didn't know you were coming over." Rachel had warned her about the potential for awkwardness, but Ella had never considered this particular scenario. Mrs. Thompson looked from her son to Ella, her gaze sharp but not unkind. "Jack, I called you earlier," she said, her tone slightly accusatory. "You didn't pick up, so I figured I'd swing by and check in." Rachel's advice about the importance of setting boundaries with family played through Ella's mind, but she wasn't sure how to navigate this situation. Ella took a step back, her eyes darting to the clock on the wall. It was 8 AM, and she had to be at class in an hour. "It's really nice to meet you," she said, her voice a little too bright. "But I should get going. I don't want to keep Jack from... whatever he had planned for the day." She hoped her cheeks weren't as red as they felt. Jack's mother looked from her to Jack, a knowing smile playing at the corner of her mouth. "It's okay, Ella," she said, waving a hand. "Jack, go get her number. I'll just... make myself at home." Jack's cheeks turned a deeper shade of red as he dashed into the other room, returning with his phone in hand. He quickly scribbled his number onto a piece of paper and handed it to Ella, his eyes apologetic. "Call me," he murmured, his voice thick with unspoken promise. "We'll figure this out." Ella took the paper, her heart racing. She had never felt so alive, so seen, as she did in that moment. Rachel had talked about the importance of communication, and now it was her turn to take the reins. She nodded, tucking the number into her pocket with trembling fingers. "I will," she assured him, her voice stronger than she had ever heard it.
