Chapter two

1685 Words
As the days turned into weeks, Ella hadn't seen Jack again. She'd thrown herself into her studies, the pressure of college life quickly becoming her new normal. Rachel had been busy with her own social life and didn't push the issue, though Ella could sense her curiosity. The few times Jack's name had come up in conversation, Ella had steered them onto different topics. She wasn't ready to admit to Rachel, or herself, that she was avoiding him. The truth was, Jack's presence had left an indelible mark on her. She found herself daydreaming about his warm smile and the way his eyes had crinkled at the corners when he laughed. But she was only 18, and he was a man with a life already established. She knew that their worlds were too different, that their age gap was a chasm that she wasn't ready to bridge. Ella threw herself into her studies, immersing herself in the world of books and lectures, using her schoolwork as a shield against the tumultuous emotions that swirled inside her. She attended all her classes, took meticulous notes, and studied long into the night, her eyes straining in the glow of her laptop. Rachel, ever the social butterfly, had filled their dorm with a steady stream of friends and activities, but Ella found solace in the quiet moments of solitude. It had been well over two months since she had met Jack, and Rachel had noticed the change in her. The girl who had once been eager to hear stories about her cousin's football prowess now shied away from any mention of his name. Rachel knew something was off, and she wasn't one to let things go unsaid. "Ella," she began one evening as they sat in their room, the silence between them palpable. "What's going on with you and Jack?"Ella looked up from her textbook, her eyes wide with surprise. "What do you mean?" she asked, feigning ignorance. Rachel raised an eyebrow. "Don't play coy with me," she said. "I know you guys hit it off at the game, and then, nothing. You won't come to any more games, you avoid talking about him, and every time his name comes up, you change the subject." Her cheeks grew hot as Rachel's words hit a little too close to home. "It's just... complicated," Ella mumbled, staring at the floor. Rachel sighed, plopping down onto her bed. "Look, I know you're young, and he's got a few years on you, but if you guys like each other, you should at least talk about it. You can't just ignore the elephant in the room forever." Ella swallowed hard, her heart racing. Rachel was right. Her biological mother had fallen for an older man, a teacher at her high school, and it had ended in scandal and heartache. The memory was a dark cloud that hovered over Ella's thoughts every time Jack's name was mentioned. She didn't want to repeat her mother's mistakes, didn't want to become that girl who threw away her future for a man. But the way Jack had made her feel, the connection she thought she saw in his eyes, it was undeniable. "I know you're worried," Rachel said, her voice gentle. "But Jack's not like that. He's nothing like... well, you know." She didn't need to say the name. Ella knew who she meant. Rachel leaned forward, her eyes searching Ella's. "He's a good guy, Ella. He's not looking to take advantage of anyone." Ella nodded, her thoughts racing. She knew Rachel was right, but the fear was like a shadow that clung to her. She couldn't help but remember her mother's story, the whispers and the scandal that had torn her family apart. Rachel had no idea what it was like to carry that kind of weight. But Rachel's faith in Jack was unshakable. Maybe she was being too cautious, too quick to judge. The following week, Rachel convinced Ella to come to another game. She agreed, mostly to put Rachel's mind at ease. The stadium lights gleamed off the polished helmets, and the scent of popcorn and hot dogs filled the air. The roar of the crowd grew louder as Jack took the field, his eyes scanning the stands. Rachel gave her a nudge. "Look, he's looking for you," she shouted over the din. Ella's heart skipped a beat as their eyes met. She offered a shy wave, and his grin grew even wider. The game was a blur of motion and color, but Ella's eyes remained glued to Jack, her thoughts racing. She knew she had to do something about her feelings, but she wasn't ready to tell him how she felt. The fear of rejection, the weight of their age difference, and the shadow of her mother's past all collided in a tumultuous storm inside her. During halftime, Rachel grabbed her arm. "Come on," she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Let's go say hi to him. He's signing autographs down by the concession stand." Ella felt the panic rising in her chest. What would she say? Would he even remember her? Rachel didn't seem to notice her apprehension, pulling her along through the sea of fans. The line was long, a testament to Jack's popularity. Ella's heart pounded in her chest as they approached, her eyes locked on his broad back. Rachel chatted with the people around them, sharing stories of their childhood antics. With every step closer, Ella felt more exposed, like she was walking into a spotlight. Jack looked up as they reached the front, his eyes lighting up when he saw Rachel. "Hey, cuz," he said, his voice a gentle rumble that seemed to shake the very ground beneath them. Rachel grinned and leaned in for a hug. "And this is Ella," Rachel said, her hand on Ella's shoulder. "You remember her from the last game, right?" Jack's gaze shifted to her, his eyes searching hers. She felt the heat of his stare and took a shaky breath. "Of course," he said, his voice low and intimate. "How could I forget?" The crowd around them seemed to fade away, and for a moment, it was just the two of them, standing under the harsh lights of the stadium. Rachel beamed, obviously thrilled with the reaction she had orchestrated. "Jack, could you sign Ella's hat?" Rachel asked, pulling a college cap from her bag and shoving it into his hand. He took it with a nod, his eyes never leaving hers as he scrawled his name across the fabric. His fingers brushed hers as he handed it back, and she felt the electricity arc between them. "Thanks," she murmured, her voice barely audible. Rachel clapped her hands together. "Alright, let's get back to our seats before we miss the second half!" Ella felt rooted to the spot, unable to tear her gaze away from Jack. The fear was still there, a heavy weight in her stomach, but it was mixed with something else, something she hadn't expected. Desire. The way his eyes had searched hers, the gentle warmth of his touch, it was as if he had seen the turmoil in her soul and offered a silent promise of understanding. Rachel tugged on her arm, bringing her back to reality. "Come on, Ella. He's got fans waiting." As they made their way back to their seats, Rachel's mind raced with plans. She had seen the spark between them, and she was determined to fan the flames. Rachel had always loved playing Cupid, and she wasn't going to let Ella's fear or their age difference stand in the way of what she believed was a perfect match. She had noticed Ella's withdrawal from the social scene and knew that her shy roommate needed a push. The second half of the game played out in a blur for Ella. Her thoughts remained fixed on Jack's gentle touch and the warmth of his smile. Rachel's words echoed in her mind: "He's not looking to take advantage of anyone." Maybe she had been too quick to judge, too fearful of the unknown. Maybe Jack was different. As the final whistle blew and the crowd began to disperse, Rachel grabbed Ella's hand, her eyes alight with excitement. "Come on," she said, practically dragging Ella through the throngs of people. "Let's go congratulate him." Ella's heart raced at the thought, her nerves jangling like a live wire. They made their way to the locker room, Rachel's voice a constant stream of chatter that Ella only partially heard. The door swung open, revealing a cacophony of shouts and laughter, the sound of water splashing and the pungent smell of sweat and victory. Players in various states of undress walked by, slapping each other on the back and rehashing the game's highlights. Rachel wove through the crowd, her confidence unshaken by the testosterone-filled environment, until they reached Jack. He sat on a bench, a towel slung around his neck, his hair damp from the shower. He looked up as Rachel approached, his smile fading slightly when he saw Ella hovering behind her. He stood, his movements surprisingly graceful for a man of his size. "Hey, you guys made it," he said, his eyes lingering on Ella. Rachel threw her arms around him, and Ella felt the same strange mix of comfort and anxiety as she had on that first night. Jack's embrace was firm, his hand resting briefly on her back before letting go. "Good game," Ella managed to murmur, her voice barely above a whisper. He nodded, his eyes searching hers. "Thanks," he said, the din of the locker room fading into the background. Rachel chattered away, oblivious to the tension that crackled in the air between them. As they stepped out into the cool night, Rachel's excitement was palpable. "So, what do you think?" she asked, her voice bubbling with excitement. "Wasn't he amazing?" Ella nodded, her eyes still fixed on Jack's retreating back. Rachel's voice was a distant echo as she struggled to reconcile the man she had met with the legend she had heard about.
