Lola’s POV
“Aren't you done bathing?” my mum's voice came from the doorpost, while I still lay naked on the bed, eyes widened in shock, waiting for the door to open.
Then I realised I had locked it up before going into the bathroom.
A heavy breath escaped my esophagus. I hurled myself out of the bed, grabbed my towel, wrapped it around my body and reached out to the door.
“Mum,” I mentioned and unlocked the door. Our gaze met and she chuckled, “I am done already. Is anything the problem? You said you were going to take a nap.”
She walked past me into the room and sank her ass on the small couch there,
I had made sure my room looked so charming with the little money I saved from Aniston. She would give me money for lunch most times, and I would starve, just so I would save up and take care of myself.
Since I met her, my life had transformed a bit, and I was no longer the poor and wretched Lola that my classmates called me.
Nick would always take my savings forcefully from me, so I asked Aniston about how she saves her money and she took me to the bank and I opened a savings account. That way, Nick would only take the cash I had at hand, but he had no idea I still had more in my bank account.
In fact, Aniston had taken my account number, and on several occasions, she would send me money to get something for me and my mum.
I made sure to hide from her how abusive my step family were, but still she assumed that my step family would never take care of me so well, so it was better I had enough to sustain me. This was because she had heard several conflicts that occur between stepfamilies from our classmates, mostly, those whose mum remarried like my mother.
She had once said, “The man should remarry. That way, the child sets boundaries, and the father protects the child, so the stepmother doesn't mistreat the stepchild. This is why I'm not scared about Dad getting married, but in your case, it's not to your favor because your mum remarried so it's in favor of your stepbrother.”
And when I looked into it deeply, she was making sense.
Nick was living fine and my mother hadn't for once raised her voice at him. If she does it mistakenly, my stepfather wouldn't let it slide. I was the one always at their mercy, clinging to a tiny rope for survival.
“Lola, did you think it over?” My mum's voice pulled me out of my daze.
I shut the door and returned to the bed, “What? I hope it's not…
“It is.” She didn't even let me finish.
Her eyes were red and a bit swollen, and I could tell she had sobbed instead of sleeping.
I folded my arms against my chest, “But mum, how am I supposed to be the source of income in this home? Why should I have to sell my body at the club to get the money for rent renewal when the father and son are here?”
No matter how many times she told me to do this amid tears, it was so disgusting to my hearing.
I knew at this point we had no choice. If I didn't do this, they would throw us out and we would become wanderers. But the thought of spreading my legs for some stranger to take my body was something I hadn't ever imagined.
The only man I wanted to lie under was Vincent; he's the one I want to break me, not some pot-bellied stranger.
“You know, I already hate myself for telling you to do this like they insisted. If I weren't so old-looking, I could sacrifice instead of putting you through. Then, Terry will unalive me if I do so. Lola please…”
The forbidden heat that had just enveloped me minutes ago dissipated. I glued my fingers against each other, my hands between my legs.
For some time, there was silence between us. I couldn't even look at my mum.
The least I did was to grab my dress and put it on. Whether I was going to the club tonight or not, I wasn't sure…
All through my life, I had never set foot in a party. Aniston would try to convince me to join her, but I'd turn her down, scared that my stepfamily would deal with me if they knew about it.
But now, they were pushing me to do what I hadn't wanted to do.
“Lola,” I heard my mum say behind me while I faced the mirror. “Say something….”
A car horn honking repeatedly made us stare at ourselves in shock.
Who could it be doing that in our compound?
“Mum, is Nick around?” I asked and she nodded.
She stood up, “Even Terry. They hadn't left, so I'm sure they will go check who is there.”
I nodded, taking my mind out from that spot. I was expecting no one, and the person who could come around with a car was Aniston, but I had told her not to come visit me, talk less of coming with a car…so I was sure whoever the person was had nothing to do with me.
Discussing going to the club made my skin cringe, so I did well to bring up another topic which kept me busy with my mother.
But in minutes, I heard someone yelling in the corridor, as though passing my door.
My mum twitched out. I couldn't help but stand as well, that was when Nick's statement throbbed in my ear…
“She must cut ties with that girl or I'm going to deal with her…”
My blood froze. That girl?
Which other girl had they seen me with if not Aniston?
I didn't think much, my feet began moving towards the exit.
“Lola, where are you heading to?” I heard Terry's voice, but I didn't want to stop, I wouldn't give them the chance this time.
If it were Aniston, then she must have been worried that I wasn't in school for days. I didn't have a cellphone so there was no means for us to communicate.
Luckily, they were yet to pass through the gate when I climbed down the veranda. I ran towards their car, waving my hand towards the driver's side mirror.
As expected, the car came to a stop.
I stopped as my breath caught in my throat due to the tension. My breath came in ragged gasps.
“Lola,” I saw Aniston rushing towards me.
She pulled me into a hug, patting my back..
“I thought I wouldn't see you. Thank goodness…” she kept whispering, her voice so mild and filled with concern.
As she pulled away, she asked, with concern boldly written on her face, “Why haven't you been in school? And these bruises…
I didn't let her finish, “I slipped while mopping the house, so mum insisted I wouldn't leave until I recovered.” That was a huge lie, but it was my only escape.
She would be f*****g worried if I didn't give a reason, and she could hate me and my family if I told her I was beaten up by my stepbrother.
Aniston was wise enough and saw through my lies, so I had always been careful not to do or say whatever would make her run a background check on me.
There's no way I'd know her mind, but I didn't want to risk it.
“I see. But staying at home isn't the remedy…” She then turned backwards, and then we realised her father had been standing behind and watching us discuss.
The moment my eyes landed on the masculine figure, hands dug into his side pockets, I took a deep swallow.
He looked as stunning as ever. Those stares of his made my belly rumble.
“Dad, could you treat my friend? She isn't too well.” Aniston left me with her father.
I only stood there, gazing at the man whose attention had diverted to his daughter.
When he turned to face me and his Adam's apple bobbled, my finger dug into my palms, sweat concealing them.
He patted Aniston's shoulder and walked closer to me, his gaze narrowed, as if indirectly saying some words to me. I greeted him, “Mr. Vincent…”
“Vincent.” he chipped in and I couldn't help but nod amid opened lips. “Is everything okay? Your family never wanted us to meet you.”
I forced a smile, not too shocked that Nick and his father did that. “Uhm, they refused me to resume school and anyone coming to visit me so I could recover first. They did it out of concern.”
“Concern…?” he licked his lips and took just one step closer to me. “If you say so. What about, coming to my clinic for some treatments? You need to resume school faster…”
A nod. How could I refuse such an offer that he made himself?
I'd be going there, but he hadn't told me for once to show up.
“Let's book an appointment..”
“Tonight,” I cut him short and lowered my head. “I will come tonight if you will be at work.”
He rolled his eyes and shrugged his shoulders, “Well, I will be there because of you.”
The butterflies in my belly swam around like never before.
“I insisted on coming with Aniston since I hadn't seen you for days. It's a pleasure to meet you now,” he stated, handing over his business card to me, the same one I had taken from his office secretly. “I'll be waiting for you.”
“Okay, have a nice ride back home.” my lips carved into a slight smile.
When I looked behind him, Aniston waved her hands at me before reaching out to the car door.
He glanced backwards, and then at me, “Is there anything you want? Or would you like to say?”
What was wrong with him? I had no other aim than making him fall for me.
I shook my head, “Until tonight…thanks.”
He ran his eyes over my body and licked his lips. It was as though he had something to say, but preferred doing so with his expressions.
My mouth watered as I caught his Adam's apple bobble again. How tall he was and hovered against me, it would look good if we were on his bed.
He patted my shoulder and began retreating while I stared at his figure, muscular, good-looking, stoutly built.
Jesus! Who wouldn't fall for such an idol like him?
My fingers caressed the card as I watched their car drive off, but still I didn't turn to leave. I stood there, pondering over what those stares of his meant. Those expressions of his…
They say, when a man devours your body and licks his lips, he lusts over you. Was that true? He felt the same way as I?
But he might not fall so easily due to my relationship with his daughter. He could see it as a taboo too, and because of his identity, hide his feelings for me.
Tonight, I could just go to his clinic instead of the club. Who knows? If he truly has feelings for me, then I could easily tell him about my financial state and my unpaid fees. That way, I'd be able to grant Nick and his father's wish of bringing money for rent renewal without sleeping with some stranger.
‘What a nice idea. I hope he doesn't resist me.’ I sighed and wiped my sweaty forehead.
