Chapter5

Silence pressed down on the training grounds, thick and heavy, broken only by the crackle of torches and the ragged sound of Alpha Kael’s breathing. He was on his knees. The Alpha, who had rejected me before the entire pack, now knelt in the dirt, his hands braced against the ground as if the weight of the sky itself was crushing him. I stood. Unaffected. Unbowed. The realization rippled through the crowd like shockwaves through water. Whispers erupted. “She did not kneel.” “The Moon chose her” “That is impossible.” Kael lifted his head slowly. Our eyes met. The bond surged violently, not warm, not comforting. It was raw and jagged, like two opposing forces colliding with no intention of yielding. “Lyra,” he said again, his voice hoarse. “You are alive.” A bitter smile tugged at my lips. “Disappointed.” His flinch was instant. “I thought you were dead,” he said. “You were banished. The forest beyond our land is lethal.” “And yet,” I replied calmly, “here I am.” I took one step forward. Every wolf stiffened. Another step. Kael’s breath hitched. Not with desire. With fear. The Moon’s presence still lingered in the air, heavy and watching. No one dared move. No one dared speak. “You should not be here,” Kael said, forcing himself upright to one knee. “You were cast out.” “I was rejected,” I corrected. “There is a difference.” The bond pulsed painfully. Kael’s jaw clenched. “I did what was necessary for the pack.” A low murmur spread. I laughed. The sound was soft, almost gentle, but it cut sharper than any blade. “You rejected your mate for power,” I said. “And called it duty.” His eyes darkened. “You were weak. Wolfless. The Goddess made a mistake.” The words no longer hurt. That was the most dangerous part. “I believed you,” I said quietly. “Once.” I let the silence stretch. “I begged you,” I continued. “Not for love. For mercy.” Kael’s hands curled into fists. “You embarrassed me.” The admission shocked the crowd. “You embarrassed yourself,” I replied. “And now the Moon has answered.” The torches flickered violently. A sudden pressure slammed into the ground, invisible but crushing. Wolves cried out as they were forced lower, faces pressed into the dirt. Kael groaned, his shoulders trembling. “What are you,” he demanded, straining every word. I met his gaze steadily. “Something you were never meant to own.” The Guardian’s words echoed in my mind. Unclaimable. “You should kneel,” Kael said through gritted teeth. “You stand before your Alpha.” I tilted my head slightly. “Do I?” The bond snapped sharply, sending a wave of pain through him. Kael cried out, collapsing fully to the ground. Gasps rang out. Fear bloomed openly now. I felt it. Not feeding me. Not intoxicating. Simply present. Controlled. I looked around the circle slowly, meeting the eyes of wolves who had laughed when I was rejected. Who had watched the guards drag me to the gate? Who had turned their backs as I was banished? “You all knelt when the Moon spoke,” I said. “All but one.” My gaze returned to Kael. “You.” His head jerked up. “She is my Luna.” The words echoed hollowly. The Moon’s voice thundered again, rolling through bone and blood. “The bond was broken by pride. The Alpha has no claim.” A howl of shock tore through the pack. Selene pushed forward suddenly, her face pale but furious. “This is madness,” she cried. “She is nothing. A discarded omega pretending to be chosen.” I turned my attention to her for the first time. She stiffened. “You stood beside him when he rejected me,” I said evenly. “You smiled.” Selene lifted her chin. “Because you were unworthy.” The air vibrated. I stepped closer. Selene stumbled back, her confidence shattering as pressure wrapped around her throat, lifting her slightly off the ground. She gasped, clawing at nothing. “Lyra,” Kael shouted. “Stop.” I glanced at him. The pressure increased. His scream cut off as he doubled over, agony wracking his body. I released Selene. She collapsed in a sobbing heap. “I am not here for vengeance,” I said calmly. “Not yet.” The pack froze. “I am here because fate dragged me back,” I continued. “And because some of you need to understand something very clearly.” I raised my hand. Silver light danced across my fingers, controlled and precise. “I was never weak,” I said. “I was sealed.” Murmurs turned to panic. Kael dragged himself upright, desperation bleeding through his pride. “The bond still exists,” he said. “You feel it. I feel it. That means we are not finished.” The bond pulsed again, sharper this time. I felt it too. Not longing. Not love. A pull toward resolution. “You are right,” I said softly. “We are not finished.” Hope flickered in his eyes. I crushed it. “But do not mistake unfinished for forgiveness.” His face was drained of color. “I reject you,” I said clearly. The words landed like a physical blow. The bond screamed. Kael convulsed, collapsing completely as pain tore through him, harsher than anything I had ever felt on rejection night. The pack erupted into chaos. “She rejected the Alpha” “That is forbidden” “The Moon will destroy us.” The Moon’s presence did not fade. I watched. Kael lay gasping, tears streaking his face as silver cracks spread across his chest like fractures in stone. “I was wrong,” he choked. “I see it now. Please” I looked down at him. Once, those words would have undone me. Now they meant nothing. “I survived you,” I said. “That is all the answer you get.” I turned away. The pressure lifted instantly. Wolves gasped, collapsing where they stood. As I walked toward the edge of the ground, the Guardian’s voice brushed my mind. This is only the beginning. I stopped. Slowly, I looked back over my shoulder. “This pack no longer owns me,” I said. “But my bloodline remembers who hunted it.” Fear rippled outward. “And when I return,” I added quietly, “I will not be alone.” The ground trembled faintly beneath my feet. Somewhere far beyond the borders, something ancient stirred in answer. I stepped into the shadows. Behind me, Alpha Kael screamed. And this time, no one knelt to save him.
