Chapter 2 ~ The Cage And The Beast

Elena’s pulse thundered in her ears, drowning out everything but the sheer weight of Adrian DeLuca’s presence. He stood before her, a man carved from darkness and vengeance, watching her as though he could already see her breaking beneath his control. But he would never break her. Swallowing the fear clawing at her throat, Elena straightened her spine and forced herself to meet his gaze. “What do you want from me?” she demanded, hating the slight shake in her voice. Adrian tilted his head, as if he found her question amusing. He took his time answering, walking toward a nearby bar cart and pouring himself a drink. The soft clink of glass against crystal was the only sound in the room, stretching the tension between them. Finally, he turned back to her, his dark eyes assessing. “Your father took something from me. Now, I’m taking something from him.” Elena scoffed. “So, I’m just a pawn in your little revenge game?” He smirked. “No, Elena. You’re the prize.” A chill ran down her spine, but she refused to let him see it. “If you think keeping me here will force my father’s hand, you don’t know him at all. He won’t come for me.” Adrian took a slow sip of his drink, watching her over the rim of the glass. “Oh, I know exactly what kind of man he is.” His voice was calm, but something dark flickered in his eyes—something deeper than hatred. “He’s the kind of man who treats people like disposable assets. The kind of man who had revenge up his sleeve. The kind of man who would rather cut off his own hand than show weakness.” His words struck a nerve, but Elena didn’t flinch. He’s trying to get under my skin. “I should be thanking you, then,” she said coolly, crossing her arms. “If I’m so disposable to him, you’ve only saved me the trouble of running away.” A low chuckle rumbled from Adrian’s chest, dark and knowing. “I don’t think you fully understand your situation, princess.” He took another step forward, and instinctively, Elena stepped back. Her knees hit the edge of the massive bed, stopping her retreat. Adrian set his drink down on a nearby table. “You’re not here because I need leverage over your father. You’re here because I want you here.” The certainty in his voice sent a jolt of something dangerous through her veins. She forced a laugh, though it came out sharper than intended. “Let me guess. You’re going to keep me locked up here until I fall to my knees and beg for mercy?” Adrian’s gaze darkened, but his smirk didn’t falter. “I don’t need you on your knees, Elena.” His voice dropped, rough and deep. “But you will learn what it means to belong to me.” Elena’s breath caught in her throat. This was no ordinary kidnapping. She felt it deep down in her mind and wondered what was happening. She had grown up around dangerous men, men who killed without hesitation, men who had no conscience, men who saw women as trophies or liabilities. But Adrian wasn’t like them. He wasn’t driven by lust or greed. There was something else in his gaze when he looked at her—something possessive, obsessive. He’s playing a game. But what’s the end goal? Elena forced herself to smirk. “I hate to disappoint, but I don’t make a very obedient captive.” Adrian leaned in slightly, enough that she could feel the warmth radiating from his body. “Good,” he murmured. “I like a challenge.” Their eyes locked, and for a moment, the air between them became suffocating. The silence was thick, crackling with something Elena didn’t want to name. She was the first to break it. “If you’re going to kill me, just get it over with.” Adrian’s brows lifted slightly, as if the thought hadn’t even crossed his mind. Then, his smirk returned, slow and predatory. “Kill you? No, princess.” His voice was a promise, dark and unwavering. “Death would be too kind.” A chill slithered down her spine, but she refused to let him see how deeply his words unsettled her. Instead, she lifted her chin and met his gaze with unwavering defiance. “Then you’d better be prepared to keep me locked up forever, because I will never submit to you.” Adrian chuckled, the sound low and rich. “We’ll see about that.” He turned and walked toward the door, his movements controlled, effortless. Just before stepping out, he glanced over his shoulder. “There’s food in the dining room,” he said casually. “You’ll find fresh clothes in the closet. Try not to make a mess of things.” Then, he was gone, the heavy door clicking shut behind him. Elena let out a loud breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. The moment he left, she sprang into action. Her first instinct was to test the windows—locked, of course. The thick glass didn’t even rattle when she pushed against it. The walls were lined with security cameras, their small red lights blinking at her like watchful eyes. No way out. Her stomach twisted. She was helpless. She had to be smart about this. If Adrian had gone through the trouble of taking her, he wouldn’t let her slip away easily. I need to understand him before I can outmaneuver him.she thought “ Taking a deep breath, she forced herself to sit down on the edge of the bed. She had been in dangerous situations before. She had grown up in a world of men like Adrian—ruthless, powerful, unforgiving. But Adrian was different. And that terrified her more than anything. Because when he looked at her… It wasn’t just hatred in his eyes. It was something more. Something that made her wonder… Who was truly trapped here—her or him?
