Chapter 1

Natalie walked over and looked down at my miserable state with satisfaction, a smug smile spreading across her face. "Lili, Mr. Gray and I already made things clear. What happened to your son was nothing more than an accident and a misunderstanding. He was just too stupid, so I had to use this experiment to make him smarter. What a pity..." Natalie curled her finger and tapped my forehead contemptuously. "Lili, I heard you developed Bipolar Disorder during your pregnancy. Perhaps your son inherited some defective genes from you back then. That's probably why he failed to survive the experiment." Just as I was about to argue back, Evan actually nodded in agreement beside her. "Lillian, after what happened to our son, instead of reflecting on yourself as his mother, you're making life difficult for Nat when she was only trying to help. That's going too far!" "Reflect on myself?" My voice trembled with fury. More than half of my Bipolar Disorder had been caused by Evan, yet now he actually had the nerve to stand there and judge me from above. Back then, I didn't want to give up my chance at a promotion and refused to start trying for a baby, but Evan secretly switched out my birth control pills. The day my pregnancy was confirmed, Evan helped his junior colleague take my position. Meanwhile, he held me as I cried my eyes out at home, gently stroking my stomach as he whispered softly, "Lili, I've always wanted a complete family. I love you, and I promise I'll make you and our child happy forever. Please, keep this baby." Even though I agreed, I suffered from constant insomnia and spiraled into endless anxiety and self-loathing, eventually developing Bipolar Disorder. At the same time, Evan and his junior colleague were making a name for themselves in court. Looking back now, I should've divorced him and taken my child away back then. Maybe my son would still have had a chance to live. "Evan, you know better than anyone how I got sick!" The man before me avoided my gaze, guilt and heartache flickering in his eyes. But after hearing Natalie's words, his expression quickly turned cold again. "Lili, your health is your own responsibility. How can you blame someone else for getting sick? Looks like your son learned his habit of shirking responsibility from you." She looked me up and down without bothering to hide the disgust in her eyes. "If you had been a good example as a mother, your son wouldn't have participated in my experiment in the first place." "Nat is right. She was helping you discipline your child, and instead of appreciating her, you dragged her into court!" Evan lowered his eyes coldly, every word stabbing straight through my chest. "Lili, I'm giving you one chance. Withdraw the lawsuit and apologize to Nat!" I took a deep breath, my whole body shaking. "No way." "Lillian! Don't test my patience!" Natalie remained calm as she wrapped herself around Evan's arm and said in a deliberately sweet voice, "Oh, don't be mad, Mr. Gray. If Lillian refuses to apologize to me, shall we let her finish the remaining part of the experiment for her son instead?" Natalie pulled out two cables, and crackling sparks instantly filled the air. "My son died because of this experiment, and you're still planning to continue it, Natalie! Are you out of your mind?" Natalie pouted and looked at Evan with watery eyes, acting as though I were the one bullying her. Evan sighed indulgently and rubbed her head before turning to me with a cold expression. "Lillian, Nat has experience now. She knows how to control the voltage properly, so stop questioning her." Then he let out a low chuckle. "You should actually thank your son. He used his life to help us find the safe threshold, so you won't die the same way he did." My nails dug hard into my flesh as I glared at the man before me with bloodshot eyes. 'How could he brush off our son's death so casually, as if it meant nothing at all?'
