"I know you don't trust me, Lili," Natalie said as she pulled out a monitor watch and handed it to Evan. "This watch can monitor her physical condition in real time. Mr. Gray, you can keep an eye on the data, and if anything looks abnormal, you can stop the experiment immediately."
She made it sound casual, but I had a bad feeling this wasn't going to be that simple.
Just before starting the experiment, Natalie bent down beside my ear and let out a soft laugh.
"Actually, I modified that watch. All the data on it is fake. Lillian, I'm about to send you to reunite with your stupid son, so I'll be Mrs. Gray instead."
The moment her words fell, she pressed the switch, and searing pain from the electric current instantly tore through my entire body.
I convulsed violently from the shock, foam spilling from my mouth as I screamed with all my strength, "Ahhh! It hurts! Evan, save me!"
A trace of pain flashed through Evan's eyes, and just as he was about to speak, Natalie interrupted him.
"Lili, your acting is way too exaggerated. This is only the lowest setting. It's not even half of what your son endured."
Not even half of what my son endured?
Whether it was true or not, the thought of the agony my son had suffered before his death sent waves of crushing pain through my chest.
Even the electric shocks suddenly felt insignificant in comparison.
Natalie increased the voltage another level.
My body jerked upright uncontrollably from the bed, but because I was strapped down, I crashed back onto the mattress with a heavy thud.
My eyes rolled back, and alongside the foam in my mouth came the metallic taste of blood. As my consciousness gradually drifted away, I saw my son standing before me, covering his face as he cried.
"Mommy, it hurts... It hurts so much..."
"Noah—" I tried to pull him into my arms, but my limbs twitched uncontrollably from the electricity.
Just as my son got closer and reached out his hand, wanting to take me away with him—
Slap!
My face went numb. I could no longer even feel the pain.
Evan angrily questioned me, "Lillian, Nat's experiment isn't over yet. How dare you fall asleep!"
I regained a bit of consciousness, but hearing Evan's words felt utterly ridiculous.
This broken and desperate state of mine looked like "sleeping" to him?
When had Evan become like this?
I stared at the man before me in confusion, finding him unbearably unfamiliar.
Eight years ago, when I accepted his confession, his face had flushed bright red as he gathered all his courage to hold my hand and solemnly promise, "Lili, I will never let you down for the rest of my life! I will make you the happiest woman in the world!"
After that, he treasured me dearly. He would waste hours standing in line just to buy my favorite cake.
I loved beautiful clothes, and every season my closet would be filled with the newest collections from luxury brands.
He knew I dreamed of becoming a top attorney, so before every exam, he would help me organize key points and patiently explain questions from previous years.
Whenever I got nervous before an interview, he would lightly tap my forehead with the Mini Gavel and sincerely say, "Lili, both of our dreams will come true. One day, we'll stand together in court and fight for justice for everyone who's been wronged!"
Back then, his eyes had sparkled with confidence and youthful energy.
But when exactly had the Evan in my memories rotted away?
Tears slid from the corners of my eyes as I slowly closed them, waiting for the moment my consciousness completely faded so I could see my son one last time.
"Natalie... isn't this experiment too dangerous? The patient looks like she's about to die." Vaguely, I heard someone speaking up for me.
"What the hell does a nurse like you know? Stop causing trouble and get out!" Natalie snapped disdainfully.
Evan glanced at the watch in his hand and said calmly, "The readings are normal. Go ahead, Nat."
"Okay, I trust you, Mr. Gray."
I let out a cold laugh. If he had bothered to look more carefully, he would've noticed something wrong with either the watch or me.
Unfortunately, his eyes were completely fixed on Natalie, tracing the curves of her body.
He was no longer the man I once loved.
My Evan had died long ago.
"Evan... let's get divorced..."
Before losing consciousness, I shouted those words with the last bit of strength I had left.
Let both of us be free. Stop torturing each other anymore.
