Chapter 3

I didn't die. When I opened my eyes, Evan's loathsome face came into view. I immediately closed my eyes. He misinterpreted it and sneered, "Just a little electric shock and you're already throwing a tantrum? What are you, a spoiled little girl?" Evan reached out to touch me, but I turned my head away. He frowned and was about to speak when I cut him off first. "Let's get a divorce." I wasn't sure if I would ever get out of here alive, but whether I lived or died, I refused to remain Mrs. Gray. What Natalie had been scheming so hard to obtain was nothing but garbage to me. "Lillian, stop being unreasonable." Evan grabbed my chin forcefully, forcing me to look at him. "If you help Nat finish this experiment, I'll give you anything you want. And divorce isn't something to joke about. Understand?" I curled my lips bitterly. "Do I look like I'm joking?" Pain shot through my chin as Evan let out a cold sneer. Lowering his voice, he threatened, "Lillian, if you keep using divorce to throw a tantrum, I don't mind agreeing to it. But think it through. Even if you come crawling back in tears, I will never take you back." I smiled. "I won't regret it. Have someone print the divorce agreement and bring it over. We'll sign it." Evan, however, hesitated. I thought he was reluctant, but instead he said, "You'll cooperate with Nat's experiment first. You fainted too early, so her experiment failed. Rest for now. We'll continue in three days." Fury surged in my chest. "I'm already like this and you still want to continue the experiment? Evan, do you even see me as a human being?" He rubbed his temples with annoyance, speaking as if it were perfectly reasonable. "Lillian, people like you who just stay at home doing nothing should contribute something to society. Once Nat's experiment succeeds, many children will benefit from it. And our son's death will be more meaningful." I blinked my dry eyes. So during the time I was forced to stay at home after losing my job, in Evan's eyes I had become nothing but a useless freeloader. Yet before he deceived me into pregnancy, I had been the attorney with the highest win rate in the capital. At banquets filled with powerful figures, I could refuse anyone's toast and drink only orange juice. After I became pregnant, I even thought about secretly terminating it so I could return to work. But when he placed his hand on my belly and we felt the baby's first kick together, happiness flowed between our gazes. At that moment, I understood what a "home" meant, and I gave up the idea of an abortion. I believed his promise that he would take good care of me and the baby. Now I realized that his so-called care meant our son being electrocuted to death, while he forced me to drop the lawsuit, apologize to the killer, and become a test subject. Neither eight years of love nor the child who carried his blood could compare to Natalie, who had appeared only a year ago. If it weren't for her, my son… The image of my child's death flashed again, and a sharp pain twisted in my chest. Even breathing became difficult. The door opened. Natalie walked in with documents and glanced at me contemptuously. "Lili, for the sake of the experiment, could you stop pretending? If you're trying to get Mr. Gray's attention, I can help you speak up. I know exactly what you're thinking." I curled my lips slightly. "Oh? Then tell me, what am I thinking right now?" She rolled her eyes. "Obviously, you're thinking about Mr. Gray." Evan straightened at that, a trace of smugness in his eyes. I flexed my wrists, confirming I had regained some strength, then slowly sat up. "No. Guess again." "Then you're thinking about your son, using his death to play the victim and win Mr. Gray's sympathy," she said with a laugh, as if his life meant nothing. "Wrong again. It's actually very simple." I let out a low laugh, then suddenly grabbed the electrical wires with all my remaining strength and lunged at her. "I'm thinking about making you pay for my son's life!" Just as I was about to reach her, the world spun violently. My body felt as if it had been crushed apart by unbearable pain.
