Chapter 2 The Murder

1805 Words
Selene’s POV The woman Victor was buried inside, the one he praised, the one he touched like she was his entire world— My best friend. My breath hitched, my hands gripping the door frame as my vision blurred. This was the man my father wanted me to seduce, to make him mine. To get pregnant for him, yet he was with someone else. I felt the tears flow. My lips trembled. I tried to breathe but I couldn't. My heart tightened as I watched. My Victor, the man that I had spent five years obsessing over. The man who taught me to love was with someone else. I couldn’t look away. I wanted to. I wanted to shut my eyes, turn and run, erase this moment before it crushed me. But my body wouldn’t obey. He kept on molesting her, not caring that I was standing there; he didn't even bother to look back. My wolf let out a silent, agonized howl, the sound clawing through my chest. I stumbled back, my stomach twisting, bile rising in my throat. No. No, this isn’t real. I gripped the doorway, struggling to breathe. Victor didn’t stop. He didn’t even hesitate. He kept moving, kept moaning, his hands gripping Liana’s waist as if she belonged to him. As if I never had. My mate's bond with him, our sacred connection, the one thing that had tethered me to him, shattered into a million pieces. A sharp, unbearable void took its place. I had always imagined rejection would be spoken. That he would have to say it. But this… this was worse. Liana turned first, tilting her head just enough for our eyes to meet. She didn’t flinch. She didn’t even have the decency to look guilty. Instead, she smiled. A slow, satisfied smirk. "You were never meant for him." Her voice was soft, almost gentle. A blade to my throat. I gasped, stumbling back, my nails scraping against the door frame. Victor’s movements finally stopped. I barely saw him straighten, feeling the crushing weight of his gaze as he finally turned toward me. His eyes widened a bit, as if in surprise. But then quickly, he schooled his expression into indifference. “Can't you knock?” I chuckled. A painful mind as I sniffed. “I can. You were just too lost in another woman's p***y to notice.” He scowled, turning fully toe, his d**k dripping another woman's juice. I didn't bother to look at Liana as I stared at Victor. “Did you just talk to me like that? Have you forgotten who you are?” “How could I? A lowly omega who got lucky by having her crush as her mate.” I smiled, wiping the tears away from my cheeks. “Continue. Do not allow me to ruin your pleasure.” I couldn't breathe. Air—I needed air. My chest constricted, the walls closing in, my entire body caving. Liana sighed, stretching lazily beneath him, completely unbothered by my presence. "You really thought you could keep him forever?" She giggled, pressing a kiss to his jaw. "Poor, sweet Selene. So naïve. She didn't even notice I got close to her just because of her mate." I didn't reply. My feet moved before I could think. Blind. Desperate. I ran. The door slammed shut behind me, cutting off the sound of their laughter, but it was inside me now. Twisting, suffocating, poisoning every part of me. I couldn’t breathe. I ran faster. Down the halls, past the murmuring wolves, past the guards who barely glanced at me. I had to get out. Had to escape. My vision blurred, my throat burning as I gasped for air. I barely felt my knees slam against the cold stone of the garden courtyard. The night was silent. Mocking. I gripped the dirt, my nails sinking into the damp earth, my body shaking. "WHY?!" The scream tore from my throat, raw and filled with pain. "WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO ME?!" I screamed at the Goddess. At the fate that had betrayed me. At the bond that had been nothing but a lie. I gasped, my chest heaving, my heart pounding against nothing. Because there was nothing left. Nothing but the empty, broken shell of the girl I used to be. I collapsed. The cold earth met my body, swallowing my sobs as the night spun into darkness. *** A sharp pain throbbed in my skull, dragging me from unconsciousness. My head felt heavy, my body sore as I forced my eyes open. The air was thick and damp. The scent of dirt filled my nose. My palms pressed into the cold ground, trembling as I tried to move. Where…? I blinked, vision swimming. Trees loomed overhead, their bare branches twisting like clawed hands against the night sky. My breathing came in shallow, uneven gasps. And then—a voice. “You’re finally awake.” The blood in my veins froze. I lifted my head slowly. Liana stood before me. Smiling. Her golden hair shone beneath the moonlight, her arms folded neatly over her chest. She looked relaxed, as if she were simply standing in the pack house halls, exchanging meaningless gossip. But there was something in her eyes. Something dark. Triumphant. I tried to rise, but my limbs were weak, too heavy. A shadow shifted behind her. Boots crushed the leaves. I didn’t need to turn to know who it was. Victor. He stood there, arms crossed, his expression unreadable. My throat clenched. I forced myself to speak. “Victor…?” Nothing. Not even a flicker of recognition in his gaze. As if I were nothing. I swallowed hard, my mind racing, trying to understand what was happening. “You’re confused, aren’t you?” Liana’s voice was light, almost mocking. Poor Selene. You thought you had everything. A mate. A place by Victor’s side. A future.” She crouched in front of me, tilting her head. “But it was never yours.” I stiffened, my breath catching. “What… what are you talking about?” Liana’s lips curved into a slow, cruel smile. “You were always in the way,” she said. “You, with your sweet little smiles, your perfect Omega obedience. "You thought Victor chose you, didn’t you?” My heart pounded. Her fingers reached forward, brushing a stray curl from my face. I flinched, but she only laughed. “He didn’t,” she whispered. “He was always meant to be with me." We have been dating since high school and you came and ruined everything. He left me for you.” A sharp, piercing pain shot through my chest. No. That wasn’t true. It couldn’t be true. I turned to Victor, desperate, my voice shaking. “Victor… tell me this isn’t real. Tell me she’s lying.” His gaze was unmoved. “She’s not.” The words cut deeper than any blade ever could. I felt cold. Hollow. But Liana wasn’t finished. She rose to her feet, arms spreading as if she were telling a grand story. “Do you remember, Selene? The night I came to you in tears? The night I told you I was pregnant?” My breath hitched. I remembered. Liana had burst into my chambers, sobbing, her body shaking. She told me her boyfriend had made a mistake, that he had been with her before me, that she was pregnant and didn’t know what to do. I was shocked. Heartbroken. But I held her. Comforted her. And then we fought. She had accused me of being selfish. Of taking Victor from her. The argument had turned violent. Liana had hit me first. Again and again. On the bed. On my neck. In my arms. I had barely managed to push her away before I collapsed, bleeding. I had never told anyone. But now, standing before me, Liana’s smile twisted into something ugly. “You killed my child,” she hissed. “That’s why you have to die.” I shook my head, violently. “No—that’s not true! I never touched you! I never hurt—” A sharp, stinging slap knocked my head to the side. Liana’s hand trembled when it struck me. But her rage burned hotter. “LIAR!” she screamed. “You took everything from me! Victor would have had a son if you didn't.” Wait… Victor was the father? Everything was happening too fast. I gasped, my cheek stinging. “Liana, please—” But I never finished. Because Victor moved. His fingers wrapped around my ankle. And he pulled. I screamed, my body dragged across the dirt, my nails clawing the thick blackened toxemia. The ground was cold and sharp, cutting into my skin, my gown tearing as rocks and mud scraped my flesh. Pain exploded across my back, my ribs, my face. I gasped, my hands slipping against the mud. Victor didn’t stop. He kept dragging me, his grip tight, merciless. Like I was nothing. Like I had never mattered. A strangled cry tore from my throat. "Victor, please," I begged, my fingers scraping against the earth. He didn’t pause. Didn’t flinch. I screamed. I kicked, I fought, but I was too weak. And then— Liana stepped forward. I barely had time to react before her hands shoved me back. I stumbled. My foot caught on nothing. And I fell. The earth beneath me vanished, the world tilting as I plunged backward into darkness. The impact sent a shock wave through my bones, a sharp gasp wrenching from my throat. My body hit hard dirt, my limbs twisting in the cramped space. I tried to move, but something held me down. I blinked, my vision spinning. And then I realized where I was. An open grave. I gasped, my hands pressing against the walls of dirt around me. “No—” Liana peered over the edge, her eyes filled with cold amusement. Victor stood beside her. Silent. Watching. I scrambled, my nails clawing at the dirt, fighting to get out. I kicked, screamed, my breath coming in sharp, desperate gasps. “Victor! Please!” Nothing. He didn’t move. Didn’t offer a hand. Didn’t stop her. Liana picked up a handful of dirt, letting it fall through her fingers. “Goodbye, Selene.” And then— The earth came down. I screamed, my body thrashing as soil rained over me, filling the grave, crushing me beneath its weight. I gasped, choking as dirt filled my lungs, my fingers digging desperately, trying to stop the inevitable. No. Not like that. I clawed, I fought. The dirt rose higher. My chest burned. My arms weakened. The world faded. And then— Darkness. Somewhere, in the void, a voice whispered. “This isn’t the end.”
