chapter 7

Kai's eyes narrowed, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his face. "A mistake?" he echoed, his voice laced with a sardonic amusement. "You were the one who left, Zara. You were the one who walked away." The accusation, though unspoken, hung heavy in the air. Zara felt a surge of defensiveness, a familiar anger rising within her. "I left because…" she began, but the words faltered. The memories flooded back, vivid and painful. Flashback The phone call had come in the dead of night, the jarring ring shattering the fragile peace of her sleep. It was her cousin, her voice laced with a mixture of pity and barely concealed glee. "Zara," she'd whispered, "you need to know something about Kai." The words that followed were a gut punch, a brutal assault on her heart. Kai, with another woman. Kai, laughing, touching, kissing another woman. The image seared itself into her mind, a betrayal that cut deeper than any knife. She'd confronted him, of course, her voice trembling with rage and heartbreak. He'd denied it at first, but the lie was evident in his eyes, in the way he avoided her gaze. "It's not what you think," he'd mumbled, his voice lacking conviction. "Then what is it, Kai?" she'd demanded, her voice cracking. "What am I supposed to think?" He'd remained silent, his silence a confirmation of her worst fears. In that moment, something inside her had snapped. The trust, the fragile hope they had built, shattered into a million pieces. She'd packed her bags, her movements fueled by a mixture of anger and despair. He'd tried to stop her, his words a jumbled mix of apologies and excuses. But it was too late. The damage was done. End Flashback Zara blinked back the tears that threatened to spill, the pain of that memory still raw. "I left because I thought you didn't want me," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I thought you were with someone else." Kai's expression softened, a flicker of vulnerability replacing the usual arrogance. "With someone else?" he repeated, his voice laced with disbelief. "Zara, you know I…" He stopped abruptly, his jaw clenching. The silence stretched, heavy with unspoken words, with the weight of their shared history. "You know what?" Zara pressed, her voice trembling. Kai looked away, his gaze fixed on the darkening horizon. "It doesn't matter now," he said, his voice low and rough. "It does matter," Zara insisted, stepping closer. "It matters to me." He turned back to her, his eyes searching hers. "Zara," he began, his voice laced with a weariness she had never heard before, "the past is the past. We can't change it." "But we can learn from it," she countered, her voice gaining strength. "We can understand why it happened, why we made the choices we did." Kai's gaze held hers, a silent battle raging between them. Finally, he sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. "The truth is," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper, "I never wanted you to leave."
