Chapter16

1136 Words
Later that evening, Zara sat on the edge of her bed in the hotel room, her mind still replaying the dinner. The kiss on her cheek lingered in her thoughts, a soft spark of something she had nearly convinced herself was lost. But it wasn’t just the kiss that she couldn’t shake. It was the way Kai had looked at her—the rawness in his eyes, the way he seemed to be searching for something in her that she wasn’t sure she could offer. Her phone buzzed, lighting it up with a message from Kai. "I know it’s late, but I’ve been thinking about you. About us." She stared at the message for a few moments, uncertainty clawing at her. Was he trying to get back into her life? Was she ready to let him? She didn’t have the answers yet, but what she did know was that the temptation of that connection, of feeling like they could be something again, was powerful. The familiar pull was undeniable. Zara let out a slow breath and typed a quick response: "I’ve been thinking too. It’s just… hard." The three dots popped up almost immediately, signaling his reply. "I know. I didn’t expect things to be easy. But I’d really like to see where this could go, if you’re willing." Zara’s heart skipped a beat. She wasn’t sure she was ready to dive into the mess of their past, but she couldn’t deny that part of her wanted to see if the spark between them was still alive. She didn’t want to overthink it. Not now. Not after everything that had happened. Maybe it was just a night to let loose, to forget the weight of all the complications for a little while. Maybe it could be something simple, something she could handle. A sudden thought struck her, one that felt both reckless and freeing: "What if we just went for a drink? No pressure." There was a brief pause before he replied: "I’ll pick you up in 20 minutes." Zara smiled to herself. There it was again—the familiarity of their rhythm. Without a second thought, she stood and pulled herself together. She didn’t know what would happen next, but tonight, she would let herself embrace the moment. Twenty minutes later, her phone buzzed again, and she glanced at the screen. It was from Kai: “I’m outside.” Her pulse quickened at the simplicity of his message. She grabbed her jacket and stepped out of the hotel room, her heart beating faster with each step toward the lobby. As she made her way outside, she spotted him immediately. Kai stood near his car, dressed in a leather jacket, a dark graphic tee, and jeans that hung low on his hips. His appearance was casual but exuded a cool confidence that made him seem untouchable, almost rebellious. His dark sunglasses sat pushed up onto his head, and there was a cocky smile tugging at the corner of his lips when he saw her approach. “You ready for that drink?” he asked, his voice low and smooth, with just a hint of challenge. Zara hesitated for a moment, taking him in. His whole demeanor was different from before. There was something rougher about him now—something that seemed both alluring and off-putting at the same time. But there was no time to think about it. Tonight, it was just about the two of them. No expectations. “Yeah. "Let’s go,” Zara replied, her voice steadier than she felt. They got into his car, the city lights flashing by as they drove toward a club that felt like a world away from their last encounter. When they pulled up, the bass of the music was already thumping through the walls of the building, and Zara could feel the vibration even before stepping inside. As they walked into the club, the air was thick with energy. The crowd was alive, bodies moving to the beat, drinks in hand, laughter and conversation mixing with the pulse of the speakers. The floor was crowded, but there was an undeniable electricity in the air. Then, the unmistakable beat of Popcaan's "Kill Dem With It" blasted through the speakers, and the crowd went wild. The rhythm was infectious, and Zara could feel the whole room come alive to the music. Kai looked over at her with a grin, his eyes filled with mischief. “You know this one?” he shouted over the music. She nodded, her excitement bubbling over as she felt the beat kick into her body. Without thinking, she stepped onto the dance floor, her hips swaying with the rhythm, letting the music take over. Kai followed her, and soon enough, they were surrounded by a group of people dancing, the vibe carefree and wild. Zara couldn’t help but get lost in the moment, the weight of everything else falling away as she gave herself to the music. The atmosphere was chaotic and electric. People were twerking, jumping, laughing, and just having the time of their lives. Zara and Kai found themselves caught in the middle of it all, dancing with abandon. She could feel the tension between them shift, replaced by a playful energy that made her forget all the questions she had been asking herself earlier. Kai was in his element—his moves sharp, confident, and full of swagger. He pulled her close, guiding her with a rhythm that was all his own. They didn’t speak much, but the connection between them was undeniable, the energy of the night carrying them further into the music. As the song reached its peak, Kai grabbed her waist, pulling her against him. Zara laughed, feeling the heat of the moment take over. Everything felt like it was happening in a blur—loud music, flashing lights, the heat of the crowd, and the electric pull between them. Hours passed in what felt like seconds, and by the time the club started to slow down, they were both a little drunk, a little giddy, but not ready to call it a night. The music had stopped, but their connection still hummed in the air. Kai leaned in close, his breath warm on her ear. “You wanna get out of here?” Zara nodded, her heart still racing from the excitement of the night. She wasn’t sure what was going to happen next, but she knew one thing: tonight had been about letting go. And for the first time in a long while, that felt good. They left the club, the cool night air hitting them as they made their way to Kai’s car. As they drove through the city, the night still felt alive around them, charged with the electricity of what had just happened.
