chapter 9

The taxi dropped Zara off at the grand entrance of the Kingston Royal Hotel. The ornate lobby, with its polished marble floors and cascading chandeliers, felt a world away from the quiet intimacy of the cove. She needed the anonymity, the space to process what had transpired. In her suite, she drew a warm bath, the fragrant oils swirling around her as she sank into the water. The tension of the day began to ease, replaced by a quiet contemplation. Kai’s words echoed in her mind: "Pride. Stupid, stubborn pride. "I thought… I thought you'd come back." She closed her eyes, replaying the scene in her mind. The way his gaze had drifted to the horizon, the roughness in his voice, the flicker of vulnerability that had betrayed his carefully constructed facade. She understood now, or at least she thought she did. His pride, his fear, had built a wall between them, a wall that had stood for years. Tomorrow. Tomorrow, he had said. She pictured his face as he confirmed their meeting, the almost imperceptible tremor in his voice. What would he reveal? What secrets would he finally lay bare? The warmth of the water soothed her aching muscles, but her mind remained restless. She thought about the years they had lost, the unspoken words, the missed opportunities. The pain was still there, a dull ache in her chest, but it was mingled with a flicker of hope. She thought about how he looked as the car pulled up, the imposing driver, the sleek black vehicle. It was a stark contrast to the Kai she knew, the man who had shared stolen moments on the beach, who had whispered promises under the starlit sky. Who was he now? The man in the shadows, the man with dangerous connections, or the man she had loved? She stepped out of the bath, wrapping herself in a plush towel. The steam lingered in the air, a soft, hazy veil. She looked at the clock. Tomorrow was coming, and she needed to be ready. She put on a comfortable robe and sat on the balcony. The city lights twinkled below, a vast expanse of glittering stars against the dark canvas of the night. She took a deep breath, the cool night air filling her lungs. She would face him tomorrow, with all the questions, all the pain, and all the lingering hope. She owed herself that much.
